Dock jobs are currently in the hands of people who are located at ports or those who have experience in marine jobs. Executives staff from merchant navy may enter dock jobs.

Courses and Institutions

Shipping - Study and TrainingAcademy of Maritime Education and Training, 3/4/5, Ambedkar Street, Gandhinagar, Saligramam, Chennai-600093. Website : www.ametindia.com.

Course 1 - (Correspondence) Preparatory course for the qualifying examination held by the Institute of Chartered Ship brokers (ICS) for Membership of the Institute of Chartered Ship brokers (MICS). The course is conducted in association with the Institute of Chartered Ship brokers, London.

Course 2 - Off campus programme in association with Alagappa University, Tamilnadu. 2 year full time MBA in Shipping and Port management.

Eligibility - Graduation with 50% marks.


Institute of Rail Transport, Rail Bhawan, Raisina Road, New Delhi - 110001.

Course - Diploma in Multimodal Transport (containerization) & Logistics management. This is a 1 year correspondence course for candidates seeking employment in rail, road, sea, air, ports or those who wish to work in warehousing, freight forwarding, customs, shipping lines as shipping agents.

Eligibility - Degree/Diploma (in engineering discipline)

Course - Diploma in Shipping Management and Associateship Course. The course covers all commercial and management aspects of shipping.

Eligibility - Graduation, persons appearing for their final year degree examinations can obtain provisional admission. SSC or equivalent with 3 year shipping experience is needed for

Associateship course.

The pre sea training courses are offered to students preparing to enter jobs at ports and docks. Refer to the courses in the next chapter.


To cope with the growing demand for qualified people, International Air Transport Association(IATA) along with International Federation of Freight Forwarders' Association (FIATA)has been conducting courses in air cargo for the past several years. The IATA- FIATA offers three types of courses-

Introductory course for beginners who learn basic cargo ratings and documentation procedures. International air cargo rating course isShipping - Study and Training an advanced course for those already well versed in basic freight calculations. Then there is the prestigious Dangerous Goods course covering responsibilities of shippers, agents and airlines involved in the transport of dangerous goods. Air Cargo agencies accredited by IATA are required to hire a minimum of two DGR diploma holders.

IATA FIATA based in Geneva has appointed authorised training centres to enable new entrants to register for the course and get the required coaching.
