Since there are different category candidates who appear in the exam hence they have seperate SMAS.
If two applicants will score the same percentile marks in the NEST 2024 exam then autority will consider marks of class 12th exam for tie breaking. In case of tie between the marks of class 12th exam then candidate who will be younger given preference over other who will be older.
Though in most other exams, the older candidates get preference but in case of NEST exam, it is different.

NEST 2025 Merit List Preparation
This section lists the rules for preparing the merit list for the National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) 2025. The following are the key points that are being followed while preparing the NEST 2025 Merit List.
- Scoring system
- 'Section–wise' Minimum Admissible Score (SMAS) or section-wise cut–off marks
- Overall cut-off or Minimum Admissible Percentile (MAP)
- Merit list rank preparation
NEST Merit List Preparation
The final ranking of the candidates will be based on percentile scores calculated from the best three-section scores. The merit list will be published based on the following
criteria:
1. A candidate is required to score more than SMAS in at least three subject sections. Then we say that the candidate is SMAS-qualified.
2. The total score of an SMAS-qualified candidate is the sum of the scores of her/his three best scores from the SMAS securing sections.
3. A candidate is required to score equal to or above a total Minimum Admissible Percentile (MAP) to get a merit rank.
4. If the percentiles of two or more candidates become equal (i.e., in the case of a tie), then the best scores in the sections of the two students would be compared. The student with the higher score would get a better rank.
5. If the tie persists, the students would be given the same provisional rank at the time of declaration of the result, and the tie would be broken by comparing class 12th marks during admission/counselling.
6. If the tie still persists, then the younger student will get a higher rank
Commonly asked questions
The NEST merit list will be prepared by taking into account the best scores from three subjects. The total marks for which NEST 2024 exam will be conducted is 200.
Since each section carries 50 maximum marks, hence the final merit list be prepared out of 150 marks. The NEST cutoff marks will be prepared from this 150 marks only.
NEST 2025 Scoring System
The following are the major key factors that are responsible for the NEST 2025 Scoring system:
1. The NEST 2025 examination has four subject sections of 50 marks each.
2. The NEST 2025 entrance examination will be conducted in two sessions, and different sets of question papers will be used for each session. The percentile score will be calculated based on the relative performance of all the qualified candidates in the respective session. The highest score in each session will be the 100th percentile.
3. During the preparation of the merit list, the three best scores from the four sections will be considered. In other words, the worst score among the four sections would be discarded for the merit list calculation.
4. As merit list calculation will be performed on marks obtained in the best three sections, the 'total' marks for NEST 2025 become 150.
The NEST cutoff marks will be prepared out of 150 marks to qualify the applicants.

NEST Section–wise Minimum Admissible Score 2025
Candidates can read the following points to understand SMAS for the NEST 2025 exam:
1. For each section, "20% of the average of the best 100 scores in that section" will be considered as the Section–wise Minimum Admissible Score (SMAS). For example, if the average of the best 100 scores in the Physics section is 41 out of 50, then SMAS for the Chemistry section would be 41*0.20 = 8.2 marks. Similarly, for other sections.
2. SMAS for different sections can be of different numerical values.
3. SMAS for the two sessions, for any particular section, can be of different numerical values.
4. SMAS for OBC students would be 90% of the respective SMAS for general category students. For example, if the SMAS is 8.6 for general category students in the Chemistry section, then the SMAS for OBC students would be 7.38 (90% of 8.2).
5. SMAS for SC/ST/Divyangjan students would be 50% of the respective SMAS for general category students. For example, if the SMAS is 8.2 for general category students in the Chemistry section, then the SMAS for SC/ST/Divyangjan students would be 4.1 (50% of 8.2).
6. A candidate is required to score equal to or above the NEST SMAS in at least three subject sections to qualify for percentile calculation.
Commonly asked questions
The MAP is the overall cut off percentile obtained by the candidates in NEST 2024 exam. The highest MAP is 100th percentile. It is different for different category. As 95 percentile for the General category, 90 percentile for OBC category and 75 percentile for SC/ ST/ Divyangjan category students.
Applicants need to secure the cutoff marks from the category they belong to, otherwise they won't be able to pass the exam.
The specific cutoff score for NEST (National Entrance Screening Test) results can vary from year to year and may also depend on the participating institutions (NISER and UM-DAE CEBS) and the programs you are interested in. These institutions may set different cutoff scores for different programs and categories of candidates (such as general, OBC, SC, ST, etc.).
The cutoff scores are typically determined based on various factors, including the number of available seats, the performance of all the candidates in the exam, and the institution's admission policies. Institutions use cutoff scores as a means to shortlist candidates for further stages of the admission process, such as interviews or counseling.
It's important to note that meeting the cutoff score is just one aspect of the admission process. Other factors such as interview performance, eligibility criteria, and seat availability also play a role in the final admission decision. Therefore, it's essential to thoroughly review the admission guidelines provided by the respective institutions and stay updated with their official notifications for the most accurate and current information regarding cutoff scores and admission procedures.
