NID Entrance Exam 2023 - The National Institute of Design (NID) closed the window to pay token fees and upload documents for the B.Des program on May 31, 2023. Candidates who were allotted seats had to pay the fee and upload their documents. NIFT 2023 seat allotment for 1st round was announced on May 25, 2023. The allotment was based on campus preferences opted for and the merit rank of candidates in NID DAT 2023.

Earlier, B.Des DAT Mains 2023 results were announced on May 19. The DAT Mains (M.Des) result was released on May 18, 2023. 

M.Des candidates who are shortlisted had to pay the first-semester tuition fees to confirm the seat and upload documents from May 18 to May 31. 

The final result is prepared by giving weightage to DAT Prelims and DAT Mains.  

The B.Des DAT Mains Studio Test was conducted on April 30, 2023. Meanwhile, the Studio Test and Interview for the M.Des program were conducted from March 20 onward.  

The National Institute of Fashion Technology declared the DAT Prelims results for the B.Des program on March 16, while the DAT Prelims results for the M.Des program were announced on February 28, 2023. The results of DAT Prelims were used to shortlist candidates for DAT Mains.

What is NID Entrance Exam?

NID Design Aptitude Test (DAT) is a national-level entrance exam conducted by the National Institute of Design (NID) for admitting candidates to the Bachelor of Design (BDes) and Master of Design (MDes) courses offered by the participating institutes.

The Design Aptitude Test comprises two steps:

  1. DAT Prelims - The candidate first appears in the Prelims exam.
  2. DAT Mains - The scores of DAT Prelims are used to shortlist candidates for DAT Mains.

Note that for admission to the B.Des or M.Des course, it is mandatory to appear in both DAT Prelims and DAT Mains.

Currently, the B.Des course has an intake of 425 seats and is offered at the following FIVE campuses - NID Ahmedabad, NID Andhra Pradesh, NID Haryana, NID Madhya Pradesh, and NID Assam. Meanwhile, the M.Des course offers 347 seats at its THREE campuses - NID Ahmedabad, NID Gandhinagar, and NID Bengaluru.

NID DAT Result 2023 

The National Institute of Design (NID) announced the DAT Mains results for the M.Des program on May 18. Meanwhile, DAT Mains results for the B.Des were announced on May 19, 2023.

The final results is prepared by considering performance of the candidate in DAT Prelims and DAT Mains. Candidates included in the final merit list are eligible to participate in NID DAT 2023 counseling.

NID DAT 2023 Prelims Results

DAT Prelims result for the B.Des program was declared on March 16. Candidates were allowed to apply for re-check from March 17-20 (4 pm). The fee for submitting recheck requests was INR 2000.

DAT Prelims results for the M.Des program were announced on February 28, 2023.

Shortlisting of candidates for DAT Mains

The scores of DAT Prelims are used to shortlist candidates for the DAT Mains. Candidates who don't get shortlisted or fail to qualify DAT Prelims will not be eligible to appear in DAT Mains. NID DAT 2023 Prelims scorecard contained details like the sectional and overall scores and the qualifying status; shortlisted candidates had to next appear in DAT Mains.

NID DAT 2023 Exam Pattern 

Admission to the NIDs is conducted in a two-stage process.

The candidate has to first appear in DAT Prelims. In the 2nd stage, shortlisted candidates have to appear in the DAT Mains exam.

The DAT Prelims exams are now OVER, and shortlisted candidates have to next sit in the DAT Mains exam.

NID DAT 2023 Mains (Studio Test and Personal Interview)

Given the COVID-19 situation, the NID DAT 2022 Mains exam was held in a HYBRID mode. Subject to changes, here are the key details about the NID DAT 2023 Mains exam.

The DAT Mains includes different test components for the B.Des and M.Des programs (as explained below). 

  • B.Des - DAT Mains will include a Studio Test that will be conducted offline. 
  • M.Des - The DAT Mains for M.Des will also include a Personal Interview, in addition to the Studio Test. The Studio Test will be conducted at NID campuses (offline), while the interview will be conducted online.

Important Instructions for the Studio Test and Online Interview:

  1. It is mandatory for candidates to appear in the Studio Test; M.Des candidates also need to appear in a personal interview.
  2. Candidates will be included in the final NID DAT 2023 merit list only if they take both the DAT Prelims and DAT Mains.
  3. Requests for rescheduling the Studio Test will not be entertained
  4.  The National Institute of Design will issue admit cards separately for the Studio Test and Online Interview.
  5. If the candidate fails to appear in the online interview, admit cards will not be generated for the Studio Test for such candidates.
  6. On the day of the Studio Test, the candidate must bring with them a hard copy of the admit card and a valid photo ID proof.
  7. Simply appearing in DAT Mains doesn't guarantee admission.

DAT Mains Components

The DAT Mains test for the M.Des program has two test components:

  1. Studio Test
  2. Personal Interview

However, DAT Mains for the B.Des program has only one test component: Studio Test. 

Statement of Purpose and Portfolio Review for DAT Mains

  1. Candidates who get shortlisted for DAT Mains will have to upload a Statement of Purpose (SoP) and Portfolio during the given window.
  2. The specific time/window for uploading SoPs and Portfolio will be intimated to the candidate by the National Institute of Design through the registered email ID/ result page.
  3. The candidate has to upload SoPs and Portfolios separately for each discipline they are shortlisted for.
  4. Format of the SoP - The Statement of Purpose should not contain more than 100 words for each question. The SoP should be uploaded as a single file (maximum size - 2 MB).
  5. Format of the Portfolio - The candidate has to upload a digital copy of their Portfolio in a single file (maximum size - 10 MB).

NID admissions 2023 is a two-tier process.

  1. NID DAT (Prelims) 
  2. NID DAT (Mains) - Candidates who qualify DAT Prelims are eligible to take DAT Mains

The admission process, starting from application submission to the allotment of seats is explained briefly here:

Step 1: Fill the Application Form

The application form has to be submitted online at admissions.nid.edu; the application link will also be given on this page. To fill out the form, get registered, upload documents, and pay the application fee. 

Step 2: Download Admit Card

Admit cards will be issued to candidates who have successfully completed the application process.  

Step 3: Appear for DAT (Prelims)

The first stage of NID admissions, DAT Prelims is a written test, which comprises objective as well as subjective questions. The exam will be conducted in offline mode as a paper-and-pen(pencil) exam. 

Step 4: Check NID DAT Prelims Result

The results for DAT Prelims can be checked by entering one's email address, date of birth, and roll number/application number. DAT Prelims scores will be used to shortlist candidates for DAT Mains. 

Step 5: Download DAT Mains Admit Card

Candidates who clear the NID DAT Prelims exam will be issued admit cards for DAT Mains. 

Step 6: Appear for NID DAT Mains 

 DAT Mains will comprise a Studio Test; M.Des candidates will also have to appear in an online interview round. In the studio test for NID admissions, aspirants are given hands-on practical assignments, which they need to complete within the stipulated time.

Step 7: Check Final Result

Based on a candidate's performance in NID DAT (Prelims) and NID DAT (Mains), the final merit list for NID admissions is prepared. Aspirants can check the merit list for NID admissions on the official website of the exam.

The application form for NID DAT 2023 is now closed. The application is for admission to the B.Des and M.Des courses offered by participating institutes. Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria for their program may fill out the form and submit it before the last date. 

The NID DAT 2023 application fee is Rs. 3,000 for OPEN category candidates.

The step-wise process to fill out the NID DAT 2023 application form is explained in brief below:

How to fill application form for NID 2023 entrance exam 

  1. Get Registered - The candidate has to first get registered by entering their email id, mobile number, etc. 
  2. Fill in the application form - The candidate has to next enter their personal, academic, and contact details.
  3. Upload necessary documents - Scanned copies of essential documents, including photograph, signature, and academic documents have to be uploaded in the prescribed format.
  4.  Pay the exam fee - The application fee has to be paid in online mode using a debit card, credit card, or net banking. 

NID Eligibility Criteria 2023

The National Institute of Design will release the eligibility criteria for the B.Des and M.Des programs. The candidate needs to confirm their eligibility before filling out the NID 2023 application form. It is because, if a candidate is found to be ineligible, his or her candidature can be canceled at any stage of the admission process.

In the previous edition of the NID DAT exam, that Prelims carried 40% and that Mains carried 60% weightage for the B. Des programme. In case of M.Des programme, that Prelims carried 30% weightage, while DAT Mains carried 70% weightage.

Q: When will NID DAT counseling be held?

The counseling for NID that 2023 will be conducted separately for the B. Des and M.Des programs. The choice filling (selection of campuses) for the B. Des programme will be conducted from May 18-19, 2023. This will be followed by allotment of seats in the 1st week of June 2023. In case of the M.Des programme, there will be no option to select campuses. Candidates will be directly allocated seats tentatively in the1st week of June, 2023. Candidates who are allotted seats will have to pay the seat confirmation fee and upload essential documents to complete admission formalities.

The candidate was given the option to select test centre selection from April 3-5, 2023. Test centres were allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. DAT Mains exam for the B. The NID that 2023 counseling will also have a document verification process. The counseling process for the B. Des programme will commence in the 3rd week of May 2023.

Q: When will the admit cards be released for NID DAT Mains?

The National Institute of Design has released the admit cards for the DAT Mains for the B. Des programme on April 13, 2023. The admit cards have been released online at the admission portal of NID. To download the admit card, the candidate will have to login by using the email id and date of birth. On the day od the that Mains exam, the candidate must bring the admit card and a valid photo id proof. The that Mains exam for the B. Des programme will be conducted on April 30, 2023.
