Q:   NID vs NIFT - Which one should you choose?

A:

NID (National Institute of Design) and NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology) are two of the most prestigious design institutes in India. Admission to the NIDs is conducted through the NID DAT entrance exam, while admission to the NIFTs is based on NIFT entrance exam scores.

Both institutes offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various design disciplines, including fashion design, textile design, graphic design, product design, and more. However, there are some basic and also major differences between the programs offered at the two institutes.

NID is primarily focused on design education and research, and offers a wider range of design programs compared to NIFT. The academic curriculum of the NIDs emphasizes on design thinking, innovation, and problem-solving. It also offers programs in specialised areas such as Transportation & Automobile Design, Toy & Game Design, and Ceramic & Glass Design, which are not offered by NIFT. The NIFTs, on the other hand, are primarily focused on fashion education and offers a specialised curriculum in fashion design, textile design, fashion management, and other related areas. The academic curriculum of the NIFTs emphasizes on fashion trends, design aesthetics, and technical skills. It also has a strong industry connect and offers numerous internship opportunities, which can be beneficial for students seeking career opportunities in the fashion industry. In terms of placements, both NID and NIFT have a good track record of placing students in top design firms and companies. However, the placement opportunities may vary depending on the specialisation and individual skills. Ultimately, the choice between NID and NIFT depends on your interests, career goals, and the type of design education you are looking for. Both the NIDs and NIFTs are among the top-ranked design colleges in the country and offer an excellent academic platform for design aspirants, so you must do the necessary due diligence, research and evaluate the programs offered by both institutes before making a decision.

Q:   What was the difficulty level of the NIFT 2024 exam?

A:

As per a majority of students who appeared in the NIFT 2024 exam, the diffiulty level of the GAT paper was easy to moderate. Students also found the CAT paper to be pretty easy.

There were some students who fo'und the GK ans Math sections a bit difficut, but the overall sentiment is the NIFT 2024 exam was easy.

Students manily found the GK section difficult because it contained a number of history-based questions.

Given the low difficulty, it can be safely assumed that the cut-off for NIFT 2024 would be high.

Q:   What is NIFT lateral entry admission (NLEA) scheme?

A:

NIFT Lateral Entry Admission (NLEA) provides an opportunity to candidates who have completed their Diploma in relevant or related fields of Design & Technology for direct admission to the third semester of UG programmes of NIFT.

The seat intake under this scheme will be displayed on the website prior to seat allocation.

NIFT 2024 Sample and Question Papers

Candidates preparing for the NIFT 2024 exam need to make sure that they solve enough sample papers and previous years' question papers to prepare for the exam. Sample papers for one will help you develop problem-solving and time-management skills.

Sample papers contain questions similar to the ones asked in the NIFT exam. So, their difficulty level and range would match your requirements. Also, by solving previous years' question papers you will get to know what types of questions are asked, the sections covered, the difficulty level, and any specific trends that are followed across the years.

The candidate can start solving sample papers very early on in one's preparation. For instance, after completing a chapter, the candidate may solve all related problems given in the sample paper.

Even if you want to improve time-management skills, there are few better tools than sample papers.

Along with sample papers, the candidate also needs to solve previous years' question papers of NIFT:

  • Previous year's question papers will give the candidate an idea regarding the types of questions asked in the design entrance exam.
  • The candidate can check the difficulty level, types of questions asked, marking scheme, and weightage by consulting these papers.
  • The candidate may also check if there is any change in the types of questions asked, or any emerging trends by consulting the question papers.

So, give your NIFT 2024 exam preparation that much-needed push by solving sample and question papers.

NIFT 2024 Exam Preparation Tips

The NIFT 2024 written exams will be conducted tentatively in the 1st week of February 2024.

Candidates seeking admission to the B.Des and M.Des programs need to appear in both the GAT and the CAT papers. However, B.F.Tech, M.F.Tech, and MFM candidates only need to appear in the GAT.

Given below are the preparation tips for the NIFT 2024 GAT and CAT exams.

GAT preparation tips:

  • Carefully go through the exam pattern and syllabus
  • Make sure that you are following the best books for NIFT 2024
  • Prepare an actionable study plan and stick to it. It is also important that you start preparing for NIFT 2024 with at least six months or so in your hands.
  • Take notes during your study.
  • Solve as many sample papers as you can. Also, add previous years’ NIFT question papers in the mix.
  • In the days leading up to the exam, take a few mock tests.
  • It is also important that you stay positive and healthy.

CAT preparation tips:

Here is how you can prepare for the creative ability test (CAT):

  • Work on your observation and creative skills.
  • Learn the nuances of geometrical shapes.
  • Before you draw anything, learn to conceptualize
  • Jittery and unclear lines are a big no-no for getting a good score in CAT. So, improve your line drawing skills.
  • Shading is not a very important skill for CAT, but learning the basics won’t do any harm.
  • Learn various types of drawings - human, figure, cartoon, perspective, doodling, geometric, etc.

Q:   When do I need to start my preparation for NIFT 2024 exam?

A:
The NIFT exam is among the competitive and is also considered among the toughest. So, it is recommended that the candidate starts their exam preparation well in advance, say with around 1 years time in hand. Note that the NIFT exam has various components like written exam and Situation Test /Personal Interview. Candidates seeking admission to the B. Des and M.Des courses need to prepare for both the CAT and GAT. The CAT is a drawing-based exam, meaning the candidate will be evaluated on parameters like intuitive ability, power of observation in concept development, and design ability. Now unless the candidate is already well-versed, developing these skills will take time. So, it is prudent to start early. The same goes for the GAT.

Q:   What are some quick tips to prepare for the NIFT 2024 exam?

A:
While there is no shortcut to success, it is always possible to achieve more by being smart and making judicious use of ones time. Here are some useful tips that will help you prepare for NIFT 2024 exam in limited time. At the outset, quickly go through the NIFT 2024 exam pattern and syllabus. Make sure that you follow the official syllabus and pattern when preparing for the exam. Next, get hold of best books that cover the entire syllabus. Make a time table taking into account the difficulty level of each topic and also weightage carried by them. Take notes during study; these notes will come in very handy closer to the exam when you need to do quick revisions.

Q:   How many mock tests do I need to take for the NIFT 2024 exam?

A:
The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) may or may not conduct mock tests. So, the candidate can take mock tests conducted by coaching institutes or by online outlets to practice for the exam. Typically, the more mock tests a candidate takes, better it is from an exam point of view. That being said, mock tests are usually taken closer to the exam to give finishing touches to ones preparation. For instance, by taking mock tests, the candidate will learn to hone ones time management skills, along with improving problem-solving skills. Note that the candidate must solve sample papers and previous years NIFT question papers, along with taking mock tests, to effectively prepare for the exam.

Q:   What are the dos and don'ts for the NIFT CAT exam?

A:
The NIFT CAT exam will be administered in an offline mode and will be a drawing-based exam. During the course of the exam, the candidate is not allowed to write any personal details and place identification marks. The CAT exam will evaluate the candidate on parameters like intuitive ability, power of observation in concept development, and design ability. To prepare for the CAT the candidate needs to work on geometrical shapes, product drawing, line quality, shading, human figures, principles of composition, etc. To improve ones figure drawing skills, one may stick drawing, before moving on to block drawing, and then evolving to add clothes and other items.

NIFT Cut-off 2024

The National Institute of Fashion Technology will release the cut-off marks for NIFT 2024 written tests at the time of the declaration of results.

The cut-off will be category-specific and indicate the minimum marks (or rank) the candidate needs to secure for admission.

The candidate thus need to log in to the result portal to check their qualifying status. Candidates who qualify in the written exams have to next appear in a Situation Test/ Personal Interview. It may be noted that the qualifying score or cut-off of NIFT 2024 is different from the admission cut-off.

The admission cut-off of NIFT 2024 will be prepared based on the final merit after considering the following points:

  • The total number of applicants
  • The category-wise seat intake
  • The total number of applications
  • The category under which admission is sought.
  • Previous years’ cut-off criteria.

Read More:

Q:   When will NIFT cutoff be released?

A:

NIFT cutoffs 2024 will be released at the time of counselling and seat allotment. The cutoff would be released institute-wise separately for the undergraduate and postgraduate offered by them. Currently, the online registration for NIFT 2024 counseling will be conducted tentatively in April 2024. The cut-off would be prepared by considering factors like the seat intake, the merit rank of candidates, admission category, etc. Note that if the seat intake is increase the cut-off would likely go down and vice versa.

Q:   Is the NIFT cut-off fixed?

A:
The, cut-off of NIFT for the various academic courses is not fixed. This is because the cut-off depends on variables like seat intake, the performance of applicants in the NIFT exam, total number of applications received for admission, etc. Now these variables may change from year to year. For instance, the number of candidates appearing in NIFT and qualifying the exam may be different across the years. And when that happens, the cut-off also changes. Typically, if the seat intake increases, the cut-off goes down and vice versa. Likewise, if the number of applicants increases, expect a higher cut-off.

Q:   Is the NIFT cut-off higher for top institutes such as NIFT Delhi?

A:
NIFT Delhi is frequently ranked among the top design colleges in the country. So, the admission cut-off for the institute is pretty high, especially when compared to the lower ranked colleges. This is because being a higher ranked college, NIFT Delhi receives a higher number of applicants. Another factor is more number of higher ranked candidates want to get admission in the institute, which also pushes up the cut-off. On the other hand, lower ranked colleges are not a priority for the top ranked candidates; meaning a higher number of lower ranked candidates applies to these institutes. This keeps the cut-off low in these institutes.

NIFT Entrance Exam 2024 - FAQs

To learn more about NIFT 2024, go through the FAQs given below.

Q:   Do we need to join coaching to prepare for NIFT entrance exam?

A:
Joining a coaching for NIFT preparation is not really needed. Coaching is for those who want to learn how to draw things. But, if someone has this talent, which most students passionate about sketching and painting do possess, there is no need for coaching. One can prepare through self-study. For your understanding, I would like to give an example. In coaching, students are made to learn how to draw the 3D image by various techniques using measuring instruments but one who is natural at art can imagine what 3D image would look like if it has to be drawn on a paper and would draw the same. In both cases, the outcome is the same. Regarding theory, that is, GAT, if you are confident to solve Maths, History, Geography, General science up till class 10th level, then there is definitely no need for coaching. Though the level of English is a bit high you can improve it yourself.

Q:   Will my candidature for NIFT 2024 be cancelled if I select the wrong admission category?

If any benefit has been availed, the candidate’s application will be rejected.

Also, if a reserve category candidate is considered for open category, then he/she will have to pay the difference in amount of application fee as applicable for open category.

Q:   What is the last date to fill out the NIFT 2024 application form?

A:

The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) has released the detailed application notification for NIFT 2024. The application form opened on December 5, 2023.

The NIFT application can be filled with both regular and late fees of INR 5,000.

The last date to apply with regular fees was January 3, 2024. However, with late fees, application will be accepted up to January 8, 2024.

NIFT has also released the program-wise eligibility criteria that candidate needs to meet for admission to the design program they are applying to. The National Institute of Fashion Technology currently offers B. Des, M.Des B.FTech M.FTech, and MFM courses at its 18 participating NIFTs.

Q:   What is the NIFT 2024 exam pattern for the GAT written exam for the B.Des programme?

A:

The NIFT 2024 General Ability Test (GAT) for the B. Des is conducted as a LAN-based, CBT exam. The exam is conducted in a centre-based mode and is bi-lingual. The duration of the exam is 120 minutes. The candidates will have to attempt 100 multiple-choice questions, which will be asked from sections like Communication Ability, English Comprehension, Quantitative Ability, Analytical Ability, and GK and Current Affairs. The GAT paper will be conducted first, followed by the Creative Ability Test (CAT). Candidates will be shortlisted for a Personal Interview (2nd stage) based on their performance in the written exams (CAT and GAT).

Q:   When will be the NIFT 2024 exam be conducted?

A:

The written tests for the NIFT 2024 exam was held on February 5, 2024. The written tests comprised a General Ability Test (GAT) and a Creative Ability Test (CAT). GAT is mandatory for all candidates, but CAT is only required for B. Des and M. Des candidates.

The GAT test will be considered in a computer-based mode, whereas the CAT will be offline based. Note that scores of the written exams will be used to shortlist candidates for a Situation Test/ Personal Interview.

Q:   In how many test centres will the NIFT 2024 exam be conducted?

A:

The NIFT 2024 exam will be conducted in 60 cities across India (the list is published on the NIFT admission brochure). Note that the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) doesn't release the consolidated list of exam centres. It only publishes the list of cities where the written exam will be conducted. So, the candidate only has to select the exam city.

Each of the 60 cities may have one or multiple test centres.

The name and adress of the exam centre allocated to the candidate will be mentioned in the NIFT 2024 admit card.

The exam city will be allocated basis information provided at the time of filling out the NIFT 2024 application form. The allocation will depend on various factors like number of test centres available in a city, seat intake, the address of the candidate, etc. Once an exam centre has been allocated, requests for a change will not be entertained.

Q:   Can I complete the NIFT 2024 syllabus in 4 months?

A:

NIFT is not only one of the most competitive entrance exams in the country, with a large number of applicants, but it is also among the toughest. The syllabus for the NIFT 2024 exam is quite vast, and most of the questions can range from medium to difficult.

So, to prepare for an exam like NIFT 2024, you need to have enough time in your hands.

If you are only beginning your NIFT 2024 now, i.e., with only a few months left for the exam, you need to pace your preparation accordingly. For instance, it will be foolhardy to try to complete the entire syllabus from the get go, because that you will put unnecessary pressure on yourself and things can only get complicated.

Instead, what you can do is make a list of high-scoring, easy-to-prepare topics. First master these topics as fast as you can. Make a study plan if you need to. Once you are done with these topics, you can move to the next category of topics, and continue this strategy until you complete the entire topic.

If you are not able to complete a topic because you are finding it too difficult, don’t panic and waste time jostling with it for long. Leave it for the time being, and come back to tackle it later if you have time in your hands.

Do solve sample papers and previous years NIFT papers as much you can.

A:

The recorded responses will enable to bring transparency to the conduct of the NIFT 2024 entrance exam. For instance, the candidate can’t be penalized or awarded marks, as the answer sheets will be in the public.

Further, the candidate can use the NIFT 2024 recorded responses to correctly calculate their probable scores.
