The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) normalisation process that is used to adjust the scores of candidates who appeared in different sessions for multi-session papers. Since the difficulty level of different sessions may vary slightly, normalisation ensures fairness by equating scores across sessions.

The GATE normalisation process is based on the fundamental assumption that the distribution of candidate abilities is the same in all sessions for a particular subject. It uses a formula that considers the mean and standard deviation of marks across different sessions. The final normalised score is then used to determine the GATE score, which is out of 1000. This process is crucial for multi-session papers like CS and CE ensuring that no candidate is disadvantaged due to session variations. The GATE 2025 results will be based on the normalisation process. IIT Roorkee will announce the GATE results on March 19, 2025.

Q:   Does the normalisation process affect all GATE papers?
A:

No, the normalisation process is only applied to GATE papers that are conducted in multiple sessions. For papers, such as CS and CE, which have large numbers of candidates, multiple sessions are scheduled, and normalisation is used to ensure fairness. However, for subjects conducted in a single session, the raw marks obtained by candidates are directly considered for ranking and score calculation.

What to do after GATE Result 2025?

After declaring the GATE 2025 result, the scorecard will be available only for qualified candidates. Then, successful candidates will go for either admission to MTech programs or PSU recruitment through GATE. GATE 2025 counselling will be conducted by COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal) for admission to IITs and CCMT (Centralized Counselling for MTech for admission to MTech programs offered by NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and CFTIs. The cutoff is the minimum mark the candidate must obtain to pass the exam. GATE cut-off marks for IIT, NIT, IIIT, etc., vary from stream to stream.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   What are some of the top PSUs that accept the GATE scores for recruitment?
A:

There are many PSUs that accept GATE scores in their recruitment process. Some of the top PSUs in India that accept GATE scores for recruitment are as follows -

  • Airport Authority of India (AAI)
  • Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL)
  • Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL)
  • Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL)
  • National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC)
  • Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC)
  • Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID)

Each PSU have a different eligibilty and selection criteria process. Candidates must go through the guidelines and instructions before filling out the GATE PSU application form.

Q:   Is 850+ a good score apply for PSUs through GATE?
A:

Scoring 850 in GATE is exceptional as it creates a pathway for admissions to TOP IITs and NITs. It is also considered a great score for PSU recruitment through GATE. To apply for PSUs, aspirants must be aware of the application process and date for different PSUs. For more details, read here - https://www.shiksha.com/engineering/articles/psu-recruitment-through-gate-blogId-22683

Q:   How to apply for PSUs through GATE scores?
A:
  • Each PSU (like IOCL, ONGC, NTPC, BHEL) releases separate job notifications mentioning the required GATE paper and cutoff criteria and valid GATE scorecard details.
  • Appear for the relevant GATE paper based on your field (e.g., ME, CE, EE, CH). A higher GATE score (650+) increases selection chances.
  • After the GATE results, visit PSU's official websites and apply for vacancies by entering your GATE registration number.
  • PSUs shortlist candidates based on GATE scores. Some conduct group discussions (GD) and personal interviews (PI). Some PSUs also conduct medical examination.
  • Based on GATE score + interview performance, candidates will receive job offers.

Q&A Icon
Commonly asked questions
Q:   What after the GATE 2025 Result?
A:

After the declaration of the GATE result, candidates can download their scorecard, which will be available for the qualified candidates. Successful candidates will take admissions for either M.Tech programs or PSU recruitment via GATE. GATE counselling is conducted by the COAP which stands for Common Offer Acceptance Portal for admission to IITs, and the CCMT (Centralized Counselling for M.Tech) for admission to M.Tech programs offered by NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and CFTIs. Also, the cutoff is the minimum mark required by a candidate to pass the exam. The cutoff marks for GATE vary from stream to stream. Therefore, we can say that candidates have various options after the GATE exam. Earlier, candidates had the options for M.Tech admissions, but now there are several options for candidates who qualify for the GATE exam. GATE-qualified candidates are eligible for PSU recruitments and fellowships. In addition to this, he or she can also opt to study abroad. A:

IIT Roorkee will announce the GATE 2025 result on March 19, 2025. To check the result, candidates will need to enter their GATE enrollment ID, registered email ID, and date of birth. The GATE exam is very prestigious among engineering and Science graduates. It is conducted every year by one of the IITs among the nine IITs. In 2024, IISc Bangalore conducted the GATE exam. The exam also opens various opportunities for engineering and Science graduates to work in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and in the field of research. The GATE 2025 brochure has been released by IIT Roorkee comprising of all the relevant information about the GATE 2025 exam, including exam dates, paper codes, eligibility criteria, etc. Read more about the GATE 2025 Result: https://www.shiksha.com/engineering/gate-exam-results.

Q:   What is the GATE 2025 normalization procedure?
A:

Normalization is basically done for the exams, that are conducted in multiple sessions. It depends on various factors, such as the difficulty levels of the question papers across the multiple sessions into account. Or we can say that the scores obtained by the students are then normalized based on the mean and standard deviation of the raw scores in their respective sessions. This will help to account for any variations in the difficulty level of the different Sets of question papers. It also ensures a fair evaluation of the candidate's performance. The GATE result of a qualified candidate indicates both the GATE score and the marks obtained by the candidate. Check how GATE normalized scores are calculated. Institutions conducting GATE use formulas for converting the marks of candidates into scores. As some papers are conducted in multiple sessions, to arrive at a normalized score for these multiple sessions, a suitable normalization formula is applied. The normalization is done on the basis of the fundamental assumption, which is that "in all multi-session GATE papers, the distribution of abilities of candidates is the same across all the sessions". This assumption is justified since the number of candidates giving multi-session papers in GATE is large. Also, the procedure for allocating sessions to candidates is random. In addition, it is also ensured that for the same multi-session paper, the number of candidates allotted in each session is of the same magnitude. Therefore, the GATE normalized marks calculator is used to calculate the GATE normalized score. Further, read in detail: https://www.shiksha.com/engineering/gate-exam-results.

Q:   Would I be able to download my GATE scorecard after the result declaration?
