GATE 2025 Normalization Procedure
GATE normalization will be done for the exams conducted in multiple sessions. It considers the variation in the difficulty levels of the question papers across multiple sessions. The GATE normalization formula is available below.
Commonly asked questions
A category-wise GATE cutoff mark is the minimum qualifying mark required by candidates in different categories to qualify for the GATE exam or secure admission in M.Tech programs at IITs, NITs, and other institutes. The cutoff can vary for various disciplines and is determined based on factors like the difficulty level of the exam, the number of applicants, and the availability of seats.
The cutoff mark is generally divided into the following -
Qualifying cutoff - The minimum score needed to be eligible for the exam, released by IISc/IITs.
Admission cutoff - The score required for M.Tech admissions is set by individual institutes.
PSU cutoff marks - The minimum marks required for recruitment in Public Sector Underrakings (PSUs).
Different categories have different cutoffs, with reserved categories having a lower cutoff than General and OBC candidates.
With a GATE score of 75+, candidates can expect admission into some of the most popular engineering branches, such as electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and electronics and communication engineering. IIT Roorkee will announce the GATE results on March 19, 2025. Candidates can access their results on the GATE's official website- gate2025.iitr.ac.in.
The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) normalisation process that is used to adjust the scores of candidates who appeared in different sessions for multi-session papers. Since the difficulty level of different sessions may vary slightly, normalisation ensures fairness by equating scores across sessions.
The GATE normalisation process is based on the fundamental assumption that the distribution of candidate abilities is the same in all sessions for a particular subject. It uses a formula that considers the mean and standard deviation of marks across different sessions. The final normalised score is then used to determine the GATE score, which is out of 1000. This process is crucial for multi-session papers like CS and CE ensuring that no candidate is disadvantaged due to session variations. The GATE 2025 results will be based on the normalisation process. IIT Roorkee will announce the GATE results on March 19, 2025.
No, the normalisation process is only applied to GATE papers that are conducted in multiple sessions. For papers, such as CS and CE, which have large numbers of candidates, multiple sessions are scheduled, and normalisation is used to ensure fairness. However, for subjects conducted in a single session, the raw marks obtained by candidates are directly considered for ranking and score calculation.
What to do after GATE Result 2025?
After declaring the GATE 2025 result, the scorecard will be available only for qualified candidates. Then, successful candidates will go for either admission to MTech programs or PSU recruitment through GATE. GATE 2025 counselling will be conducted by COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal) for admission to IITs and CCMT (Centralized Counselling for MTech for admission to MTech programs offered by NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and CFTIs. The cutoff is the minimum mark the candidate must obtain to pass the exam. GATE cut-off marks for IIT, NIT, IIIT, etc., vary from stream to stream.
Commonly asked questions

Successful candidates will take admissions for either M.Tech programs or PSU recruitment via GATE. GATE counselling is conducted by the COAP which stands for Common Offer Acceptance Portal for admission to IITs, and the CCMT (Centralized Counselling for M.Tech) for admission to M.Tech programs offered by NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and CFTIs. Also, the cutoff is the minimum mark required by a candidate to pass the exam. The cutoff marks for GATE vary from stream to stream. Therefore, we can say that candidates have various options after the GATE exam. Earlier, candidates had the options for M.Tech admissions, but now there are several options for candidates who qualify for the GATE exam. Normalization is basically done for the exams, that are conducted in multiple sessions. It depends on various factors, such as the difficulty levels of the question papers across the multiple sessions into account. Or we can say that the scores obtained by the students are then normalized based on the mean and standard deviation of the raw scores in their respective sessions. This will help to account for any variations in the difficulty level of the different Sets of question papers. It also ensures a fair evaluation of the candidate's performance. The GATE result of a qualified candidate indicates both the GATE score and the marks obtained by the candidate. Check how GATE normalized scores are calculated. Institutions conducting GATE use formulas for converting the marks of candidates into scores. As some papers are conducted in multiple sessions, to arrive at a normalized score for these multiple sessions, a suitable normalization formula is applied. The normalization is done on the basis of the fundamental assumption, which is that "in all multi-session GATE papers, the distribution of abilities of candidates is the same across all the sessions". This assumption is justified since the number of candidates giving multi-session papers in GATE is large. Also, the procedure for allocating sessions to candidates is random. In addition, it is also ensured that for the same multi-session paper, the number of candidates allotted in each session is of the same magnitude. Therefore, the GATE normalized marks calculator is used to calculate the GATE normalized score. Further, read in detail: https://www.shiksha.com/engineering/gate-exam-results.
