The National Institute of Technology, also known as NIT, is a group of institutions owned by the government and founded to provide advanced education in the Science and Technology fields. At present, there are 31 NITs located in each state or territory in India. Out of the 31 NITs, 11 are relatively newly established while the remaining 20 are old engineering institutes.

For admission to NITs' BTech courses, engineering aspirants must apply for JEE Main, a national engineering entrance exam administered by NTA (National Testing Agency). To participate in the seat allocation process, successful candidates must register for JoSAA Counseling. Admission is only granted to successful applicants who score above the JEE Main cutoff. CCMT (Centralized Counseling for MTech/MArch/MPlan/MDes) is in charge of seat allocation in the NITs.
NIT Colleges in India: Eligibility Criteria
In India, NITs provide Engineering courses at the UG, PG, Diploma, and PhD levels. Depending on the course and branch the candidate chooses, there are different eligibility requirements. For the candidates' reference, however, the following general eligibility requirement for UG, PG, Diploma, and PhD Engineering degrees is provided:
BE/BTech: Candidates must have passed Class 12 from a recognised board with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects. They must have also secured a minimum of 75 percent aggregate score (there is relaxation for other categories).
BTech Lateral Entry: Candidates must have passed a three-year diploma granted by the Board of Technical Examination of a State Government, with a minimum of 45 percent aggregate or equivalent.
ME/MTech: Candidates who have completed their BE/BTech degree with a valid score in GATE are eligible for the ME/MTech degree course.
Diploma: Aspirants must have passed the Class 10/equivalent examination, with at least 35 percent in Science and Maths subjects.
PhD.: Aspirants must have secured a minimum of 55 percent aggregate or 5.5 CPI in BTech/MTech or equivalent degree in relevant streams.
