What is Social Work?

Social Work is studied in order to enhance social functioning and overall well-being. Social Work is an academic discipline which focuses on individuals, families, groups and communities who are in need of help. Social Work practice includes helping and assisting people by providing them with a better life. The study of Social Work is based on various subjects under social sciences such as Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, Public Health, Community Development, Law and Economics. The main objective of Social Work is to bring a social change to the society we live in.

Social Work started off with voluntary philanthropy, however, social work requires professionals to cater to the needs of millions who are starving and homeless. The effects of the industrial revolution and the Great Depression in the 1930s made social work a defined discipline.
