What is CAD / CAM / CAE?

In the fast-moving world, it is very important to manufacture and deliver products within the schedule. Failing it not only increases costs but also brings down reputation in the market and annoys the customers. For products like aircraft and automobiles, their design must be sustainable, meet all security standards, aerodynamics, and have enough space. Computer software have helped engineers in designing pre-production models of all such products. CAD, CAM, and CAE are the software that help an engineer in not only modelling of a product but also in finding out vulnerable areas and effective use of raw material.

The growing use of these software in different industries is also witnessing an increase in demand for relevant professionals. A person with working knowledge of CAD, CAM or CAE software can have a good future ahead. CAD programs are extending their reach to designers, architects, researchers, surgeons, and many other professionals. That is the reason the software makers are continuously changing and improving features.

3D CAD modeling software is an essential tool in helping mechanical designers and engineers to create the CAD models of the design intent. These CAD models are used for creating the 2D drawing for manufacturing the parts.

Computer-aided design (CAD) involves creating computer models defined by geometrical parameters. CAD systems enable designers to view objects under a wide variety of representations and to test these objects by simulating real-world conditions.

Computer-aided engineering (CAE) is a subsequent process of CAD. CAE is the process of solving engineering problems through the use of sophisticated, interactive graphical software.

Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) is an application technology that uses computer software and machinery to facilitate and automate manufacturing processes. CAM is the successor of computer-aided engineering (CAE) and is often used along with computer-aided design (CAD).

Simply, it can be said that first, we create the model (virtual prototype) by using CAD software package then we make the analysis of that model CAE software package to check its design aspects and in the last step after validating that design in case it moves to CAM package to generate its tool path required for the manufacturing.
