What is the AIBE Exam?

All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is a national-level exam conducted by Bar Council of India (BCI). Through AIBE exam, BCI evaluates candidates' analytical abilities along with basic understanding of law subjects to assess whether the provisionally enrolled advocates or fresh law graduates have the aptitude to practice law in India. Earlier, the exam was conducted as an open book test in which candidates were allowed to carry study material inside the exam hall. However, from 2021 onwards, candidates will only be allowed to carry Bare Acts without notes inside the test centre. The exam will no more be held as an open-book examination. AIBE Qualifying Criteria: To clear AIBE, candidates should obtain minimum 40 per cent aggregate if they belong to the General or Other Backward Class (OBC) category and 35 per cent aggregate if they belong to Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) category.

Why is it mandatory to clear the AIBE exam?

BCI awards the Certificate of Practice to candidates who clear the bar exam with the above-mentioned minimum aggregate marks. Those who are not able to clear AIBE remain enrolled with the State Bar Council as provisional advocates and not practicing lawyers. Appearing for the AIBE exam is mandatory for all law graduates who have completed their degree in or after 2010. However, advocates who have graduated in the year 2009 or before are exempted from taking the exam to practice law.
