Q:   Will NTA lower the NEET cut off for this year?
A:

Q:   What is the difference between NEET score and percentile?
A:

The NEET score and percentile are two different entities, and they serve distinct purposes. Here's the difference between them:

NEET Score:
The NEET score is the actual mark obtained by a candidate in the NEET exam. It is a raw score that reflects the number of correct answers a candidate has attempted. The NEET score is used to determine the qualifying status of a candidate for admission to medical and dental colleges.

NEET Percentile:
The percentile score, on the other hand, indicates the candidate's performance relative to other examinees. It is a measure of how many candidates have scored equal to or below the candidate's score in the exam. The percentile score is calculated by dividing the total number of candidates who appeared for the exam into 100 equal groups, with each group representing a percentile.

For example, if a candidate scores 600 out of 720 in NEET, their percentile score would be around 90, indicating that they have scored higher than 90 per cent of the total candidates who appeared for the exam.

In summary, the NEET score reflects the actual mark obtained, while the percentile score reflects the candidate's relative performance compared to others. Both scores are important, and they serve different purposes in the admission process.

Q:   What is the procedure to calculate the NEET percentile score?
A:

A percentile refers to the comparison between the score of one candidate vis-a-vis the other test takers. It is the percentage of scores that a particular score surpassed. NTA has stated the formula to calculate the NEET percentile, which is given below:

100 multiplied by the Number of candidates with their raw score equal to/ less than the candidate divided by the Total number of candidates who appeared for NEET.

As per the NEET 2023 result data, the highest percentile obtained was 99.9999019.

NEET Result 2025: Tie-breaking Protocol

What happens when two or more candidates secure the same marks in NEET UG results? Owing to a large number of test-takers, it is not rare for two or more candidates to secure the same marks in this examination. However, such candidates will not share the same rank on the NEET merit list. Hence, NTA has a tie-break mechanism in place for such situations. The NEET 2025 Tie-Breaking criteria have been changed by NTA. The following parameters are considered in the case of tie-in scores:

  1. Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Biology (Botany & Zoology) in the Test, followed by,
  2. Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Chemistry in the Test, followed by,
  3. Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Physics in the Test, followed by,
  4. Candidate with less proportion of the number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in all the subjects in the Test,
  5. Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Biology (Botany & Zoology) in the Test, followed by
  6. Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Chemistry in the Test, followed by
  7. Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Physics in the Test, followed by
  8. In case, the first seven criteria are exhausted and the tie still persists, it will be resolved through a random process with the guidance of an independent expert committee.

Till 2022, NTA considered factors like candidates older in age and application number in descending order. These criteria have been removed for NEET 2023.

NEET 2025 Result and Merit List

NTA releases the merit list of the candidates based on the NEET result. Multiple lists are released based on the category of the candidate. An overall NEET merit list is also released which carries details of all the candidates who cleared the examination. The merit lists of NEET are then shared by the NTA with the different bodies responsible for the NEET counselling process for national and state quota seats. Based on these lists, MCC and various counselling authorities will prepare their merit or seat allotment lists.

Types of Merit Lists

Overall merit list: This merit list includes the names and ranks of all the candidates who appeared for NEET. This is the first merit list and is prepared by NTA. This merit list will be forwarded to all counselling bodies, both national and state.

15 per cent AIQ merit list: This merit list will contain the names of only those candidates who would qualify for the NEET UG result. This merit list is prepared by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).

Commonly asked questions
Q:   What is a NEET safe score for OBC category candidates?
A:

The NEET safe score for OBC category candidates can be anything between 400 to 600, or more. The total marks of NEET exam is 720. According to the NEET 2024 cutoff for OBC category is 127 to 161, which is the 40th percentile. While this is the qualifying score or marks as decided by NTA, in terms of admission, a score range of 400 to 600 is considered safe for admission to MBBS courses and for admission to BDS, BSc Nursing, BAMS, BUMS or BHMS courses, a NEET score of 300 or above would be good enough.

Q:   What is a NEET safe score for SC and ST category candidates?
A:

NEET safe score for the reserved category candidates or the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories is likely to be in the range of 400 to 600, or above. Candidates aiming for an MBBS seat at the top medical colleges in India or AIIMS should score above 500 to be on the safer side. On the other hand, scoring in the range of 400 and 600 will also be fruitful if candidates plan to join MBBS score at the mid to top rung medical college, or if he or she would like to opt for BDS or BSc Nursing courses at a top instittue in India. In case a candidate scores below 400 in NEET, then he or she may need to wait till the third or fourth round of NEET counselling to get a seat allotment.

Q:   What is NEET safe score for General category candidates?
A:

A General category candidate of NEET lies at the highest competitive zone as not only is the qualifying cutoff the highest among the other categories, but the selection cutoff at the institutes as well. To ensure getting a seat at one of the top medical colleges in India, a safe NEET score for General category candidates would be 600 and above out of 720. While getting 650 or above would be an absolute safe score for admission to top medical colleges in India, scoring above 600 would also ensure a seat of choice. On the other hand, a NEET score above 500 would also be considered a good score for getting admission to a top ranked college.

Q:   What is a NEET safe score for PwD category candidates?
A:

The NEET cutoff score for the PWD candidates across categories is given in the table below.

What after NEET 2025 Results?

Candidates who qualify for NEET will be considered eligible to participate in the NEET counselling process, which is conducted at both state and national levels. The national-level counselling for admission to the 15 per cent All India quota seats was conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).

The actual admission process begins after the announcement of the NEET results. Candidates must then prepare themselves for the NEET counselling process by researching the top medical colleges to which they can take admission. After the NEET 2024 results are announced, every candidate will know their All India Ranks (AIR). These ranks can be used in the NEET College Predictor to get a list of medical colleges for which they are eligible.

Candidates can then check the NEET 2024 cutoff for admission to these colleges. They can then visit the official websites of the respective colleges and check the infrastructure and fee structure of the colleges. Being prepared with a list of medical colleges to which one plans to apply can prove beneficial during the counselling process.

A:
If a candidate belongs to the General Category, he/she should aim for at least 700+, and in the case of a reserved category, a candidate should aim for at least 675+. This is with regard to marks. In case the candidate wishes to know the same percentile-wise, he/she must score above 99 percentile to secure admission to AIIMS Delhi. Q:   What should we do after the NEET result?
A:
After the declaration of the NEET result, candidates have to first check whether they have qualified for the exam or not, by comparing their obtained score with the qualifying or cutoff marks. In case they do, they will have to get prepared for the next round, which is the NEET counselling process. For this, they must keep the necessary documents, including the printout of the NEET scorecard ready. They should also keep checking the national and state-level counselling websites to avoid missing important notifications. In case they are unable to meet the NEET cutoff, they will have to explore other courses which conduct admission through NEET scores and plan their future course of action accordingly. In case they miss the cutoff by a few marks, they can consider repeating a year.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   What is the selection process for MBBS and what is the minimum NEET score required?
A:

For the year 2023, the minimum NEET scores needed were 720-137 for the general category and 136-107 for the OBC and SC/ST categories. It is not possible to enrol in most Indian universities directly through walk-in, including medical institutes. There must be a proper application procedure and requirements for eligibility. The application procedure usually entails filling out an online form, registering, adding supporting documentation, paying a fee, and submitting the form.

Candidates are shortlisted by universities based on their academic standing, admission exam results, and other pertinent criteria. The people who made the short list may additionally be contacted for interviews or counselling. The results of the entrance exam, academic standing, and, if relevant, the counselling or interview performance are taken into consideration for determining final admissions.

Q:   Can there be more than one topper in NEET?
A:

Yes, there can be more than one topper in NEET. Basically, any NEET taker, who has scored 720 or close to that, and has ranked between 1 and 10, are considered as NEET toppers. Since NEET is an objective-type multiple-choice question (MCQ) test, there is a possibility that more than one candidates can score full marks. In that case, the tie-breaking criterion will be applied to determine the All India Rank (AIR) of the toppers. In rare scenario, two NEET toppers can be given AIR 1. For instance, in NEET 2023, two candidates scored 720 and both of them secured AIR 1. On the other hand, the third candidate scored 716 out of 720 and was allotted AIR 3.

Q:   Can I apply for admission to AIIMS and JIPMER, Puducherry on the basis of the NEET result?
A:
Yes, AIIMS and JIPMER conduct admissions on the basis of NEET result or scores. After the implementation of the NMC ACT NEET is the sole entrance examination for admission to UG medical courses in India. Earlier, AIIMS and JIPMER used to conduct their own entrance exams which were scrapped in 2020. The admission to these institutes will be done through the counselling process conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) under the 15 per cent All India Quota (AIQ) seats.
