COVID-19: 55 Cases at IIT Madras; Institute says fully geared up to meet any exigency

IIT Madras is enforcing compliance to safety protocols with student volunteers rigorously.

With the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras turning into a COVID cluster as the number of infections on the campus has gone past 50 in the past few days, the institute has issued a statement stating it is fully geared up to meet any exigency.

As per a statement by IIT Madras, “Our hospital and doctors are on high alert and being advised by the Tamil Nadu Govt. We are enforcing compliance to safety protocols with student volunteers rigorously.
In addition to this, all students are fully vaccinated. IIT Madras has handled 3 waves effectively and we believe that lessons learnt during those will help us handle the current cases effectively.”

In the past few days, 55 cases of COVID-19 infections have been reported, with 25 cases coming on April 22 alone. leading to the formation of a COVID cluster. The local authorities are worried that since more samples have been sent for testing, it is expected that some might come back positive, thus increasing the total count.

Confirming COVID cases on the campus, IIT Madras has stated that the students were immediately isolated. “All the students who are permitted to reside in the hostels including those found positive are fully vaccinated and have mild symptoms only. The Health Secretary and the Chennai Corporation officials have visited the students kept in isolation at the campus,” states the IIT Madras statement.

The Health Secretary has insisted on compulsory masking, physical distancing, isolation and testing if symptomatic (fever, sore throat, cough, cold). Screening of the contacts of those who are tested COVID positive and the inmates of the respective hostels is being done by the Chennai Corporation.

All Staff /Students and Campus Residents have been requested to strictly follow COVID protocols to ensure their safety. The institute is following the COVID protocols as instructed by the health authorities.
Tamil Nadu Health Secretary has informed that COVID tests are being conducted at 19 hostels of IIT Madras.
