The level and ranks given to the officers are given below.

Promotions are offered to candidates on the basis of their performance and years of service. Candidates who have served for three years as Flying Officers are promoted to Flight Lieutenant. To qualify for promotions, candidates need to undergo departmental tests. If an employee completes six years of service, they are ranked as the Squadron leader. Technical Officers who are engineers are given the seniority of two years. It is mandatory for all officers to attend the C examination which comprises General Knowledge and post concerning topics for departmental promotion and to seek promotion in ranks.

The job profile of Flying Branch is given below:

• Operate and look after fighter planes with the combat.
• Transportation of ammunition tasks.
• Transportation of material.

Candidates are given insurance cover of INR 1 crore. This is applicable to serving officers. An additional cover of INR 12 Lakh (on contribution) is applicable to Flying Branch Officers.

n addition to AFCAT salary, Air Force Officers are entitled to various allowances based on the nature of duty/place of posting. The allowances that Air Force Officers are entitled to include Flying Allowance offered to Flying Branch Officers, Technical Allowance given to Technical Branch Officers. Candidates are also entitled to allowances such as Test Pilot & Flight Test Engineer, Field Area Allowance, Special Force, Siachen, Special Compensatory (Hill area), Island Special Duty, Area, and Remote Locality Allowance.

AFCAT salary per month consists of base pay, and some additional allowances and benefits. There is a fixed amount of increment given to every candidates on the basis of their service period. AFCAT salary differs from rank to rank and during training candidates are offered stipend of INR 56,100.

It is easy to crack the AFCAT exam if candidates have the proper understanding of exam pattern and syllabus. To qualify AFCAT exam, it is ideal that candidates should secure a score between 140 and 160 marks out of 300. In 2022, AFCAT cut off was 157, whereas the cut off for EKT was 18. Candidates are required to secure equal to or more than the cut off marks to qualify the exam. For correct answer, candidates score three marks whereas one mark is deducted for wrong answers. The total marks of candidates are calculated based on the number of correct and incorrect answers. The normalisation formula is applied to calculate the score.

AFCAT exam is conducted to get into the Indian Air Force. To adjust the level of difficulty, normalisation of marks are done in AFCAT. It is the process to mark and rank candidates based on the difficulty level of the shifts. It is a process to equalize scores of students appearing for the same exam but in different shifts having different Sets of question papers. Candidates are marked based on the difficulty level of the shifts. AFCAT exam is held across multiple shifts. Each shift has a different difficulty level. The normalisation process is introduced to adjust the difficulty level of each set and is used to fill the gap of disparity.

There is no limit to the number of attempts the AFCAT exam. Candidates falling within the prescribed age limit can appear for the exam. As per AFCAT eligibility, applicants must be 20 to 24 years (at the time of commencement of course). The upper age limit for candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot License issued by DGCA (India) is relaxed up to 26 years (at the time of commencement of course).

AFCAT exam comprises sections such as General Awareness, Verbal Ability in English Numerical Ability, Military Reasoning, and Aptitude test. Out of the 100 questions, Reasoning and Military Aptitude Test carries 35 questions, Verbal ability in English carries 30 questions, Numerical Ability carries 15 questions, General Awareness carries 20 questions. The Reasoning and Military Aptitude Test section carries a total of 105 marks, Verbal ability in English carries a total of 90 marks, Numerical ability section carries a total of 45 marks, General Awareness section carries a total of 60 marks. AFCAT exam is conducted for two hours whereas EKT is held for 45 minutes. There is no sectional time limit in AFCAT exam. The candidates are allowed to leave the examination hall after the completion of the exam. AFCAT exam is conducted in two shifts. Shift 1 exam is conducted from 9.45 am to 11.45 am whereas Shift 2 is held from 2.15 pm to 4.15 pm. Candidates need to answer 100 questions in AFCAT exam within two hours. Candidates can divide time among the sections according to their convenience. Candidates can learn time management by practicing previous years' question papers and mock tests. The total marks allotted to AFCAT exam are 100.

It is not that difficult to crack AFCAT if candidates follow the right strategy for preparation. Before beginning with the preparation, candidates must go through the AFCAT syllabus because it will help them to know the topics to be covered for the exam. After completing the syllabus, candidates must attempt the mock tests to analyse the level of their preparation. AFCAT exam or Air Force Common Admission Test is conducted by Indian Air Force to select candidates as Class 1 gazetted officers in the Flying and Ground Duty (Technical and Non-Technical) branches. EKT or Engineering Knowledge Test is conducted for the candidates who apply for the technical branches. AFCAT exam carries a total of 100 questions from General Awareness, Verbal Ability in English Numerical Ability, Military Reasoning, and Aptitude test. The total marks allotted to the AFCAT exam are 300. The duration of the test is two hours. EKT carries 50 questions that are Engineering subject-specific. Questions are asked from Mechanical, Computer Science, and Electrical & Electronics. The total marks allotted to the test are 150 and is held for 45 minutes.

The salary structure of Flying Officer is given below.

Candidates recommended by the Selection Board, are sent for the medical examination either at Air Force Central Medical Establishment (AFCME), New Delhi or Institute of Aviation Medicine, Bengaluru.

Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS) will be administered to recommended candidates only. This is once in a lifetime test. Candidates who failed the CPSS/ PABT in an earlier attempt or a Flight Cadet suspended from flying training at Air Force Academy are not eligible.

All Stage 1 qualified candidates need to undergo tests as part of their Stage 2 testing during four to five days. Fifth day is for CPSS testing (Flying branch). The following tests are conducted in Stage 2:

• Psychological Tests are written tests that are conducted by a Psychologist
• Group Tests are interactive indoor and outdoor activities which are a combination of mental and physical work
• Interview involves a personal conversation with an Interviewing Officer
• Candidates who have applied for flying branch and have been recommended, will also have to undergo Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS) test

Officer Intelligence Rating Test along with Picture Perception and discussion test is conducted on the first day.Stage-I test is a screening test and only those who qualify are called for subsequent testing. All Stage-I qualified candidates are subjected to document check to ascertain their eligibility for the branches applied for. Candidates who either do not qualify in Stage-I or do not meet the required eligibility criteria are sent back on the first day itself. 

Apart from the AFCAT exam pattern, candidates appearing for the exam should be familiar with the negative marking. It will help candidates to answer more mindfully and avoid errors of negative marking. One mark is deducted for every wrong answer. Candidates are not awarded any marks for unattempted questions. For correct answer, three marks are awarded.

AFCAT exam is conducted to select Class-I Gazetted Officers in Flying and Ground Duties (Technical and Non-Technical). Candidates are granted Short Service Commission in Flying Branch and Permanent Commission/Short Service Commission in Ground Duties for both Technical and Non-Technical roles.

The types of Commissions offered through AFCAT exam are given below: Permanent Commission (PC) for Men. Candidates joining as PC officers would continue to serve till the age of superannuation in their respective branches as per their rank. Short Service Commission SSC for Men & Women: The engagement period for Flying Branch (Men and Women) SSC Officers is fourteen years from the date of Commissioning (Non extendable) The initial tenure for Ground Duty (Technical & Non-Technical) SSC Officers would be for a period of ten years. An extension of four years may be granted subject to service requirements, availability of vacancies, willingness, suitability and merit Grant of Permanent Commission (PC) would be considered subject to service requirements, availability of vacancies, willingness, suitability, merit and as per prevailing policies on the subject. SSC officers presently are not eligible for grant of pensionary benefits.

AFSB interview is conducted in several stages which candidates need to qualify successfully.
