Universities that use English as their primary medium of teaching and training require standardised test scores for the screening of applicants worldwide. Conducted by the Pearson PLC Group, the Pearson Test of English - Academic (commonly known as PTE Academic or PTE-A) is one of the most trusted English tests among Indian students looking to study at universities abroad.

Though there are various kinds of PTE exams suited for the different needs of the test takers (studying abroad and immigrating to a foreign country), the PTE test that is best suited for students willing to study abroad is the PTE Academic exam

Accepted in over 3,500+ universities and colleges globally, the Pearson PTE - A scores are also accepted for work, professional registration and migration visa applications to Australia and New Zealand. The PTE Academic exam measures the English speaking, writing, reading and listening skills of the candidate in a single two-hour session. This exam page provides thorough information on the PTE Academic exam which can be accessed on the "My PTE" portal.

Q:   What is PTE exam for?

A:

The PTE exam, which stands for Pearson Test of English, is a computer-based English language proficiency test. It is primarily used for:

  1. Academic purposes: Many universities and colleges accept PTE scores for the admissions of non native English speaking international students.
  2. Immigration: Some countries use PTE scores as part of their visa application process.
  3. Professional certification: Certain professional organizations recognize PTE scores for certification or registration purposes.

The test assesses the test-taker's abilities in four main language skills:

  1. Speaking
  2. Writing
  3. Reading
  4. Listening

PTE is known for its quick results (typically available within 2 days of taking the test) and its use of AI scoring to ensure consistency. The PTE test is accepted in many English-speaking countries, including the UK, Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada.

Q:   How much time is needed for PTE preparation to study abroad?

A:

The time needed for PTE preparation can vary significantly depending on several factors such as:

  1. Current English proficiency: If you are already fluent, you might need less time compared to someone still learning the English language.
  2. Target score: Higher score requirements generally demand more preparation time. Hence, if you aim to score high, expect a longer preparation time than usual.
  3. Familiarity with the test format: The PTE has a specific structure and question types that you will need to become comfortable with. The sooner you understand and grab the test pattern, the sooner you will be able to prepare for the test.
  4. Study intensity: Full-time preparation will naturally progress faster than part-time.
  5. Individual learning pace: Some people may grasp concepts quicker than others.

With that being said, here are some general timelines for the preparation of the PTE exam:

  • For those with intermediate to advanced English skills: 4-6 weeks of focused study is often considered sufficient.
  • For those with lower English proficiency: 2-3 months or more might be necessary.

It must be noted that many test-takers reported that studying 1-2 hours daily for about a month helped them feel prepared for the exam.

Q:   How can I boost my PTE score to 90?

A:

Candidates are often encouraged to visit and revisit their PTE Academic syllabus. Know the PTE Exam Pattern and above all practice as many PTE Sample Papers as possible to leave minimum room for error.

A prior knowledge of the exam pattern and the question types will help perform faster in the exam so that you will be able to give sufficient time to the questions that require critical thinking.

Q:   Who all are eligible to take the PTE Academic exam?

A:

There are no specific eligibility criteria based on nationality, background, or education level. Anyone aiming to demonstrate their English proficiency for studying abroad, immigration, or professional purposes can take the PTE test. However, individual universities or visa applications may have their own score requirements.

Q:   How many times can a candidate appear for the PTE exam?

A:

There is no limit set by Pearson PLC Group - the conducting body of the PTE exam, on how many times a candidate can appear for their PTE Academic exam. However, candidates cannot sit for another PTE exam until the following conditions are met -

  1. They have received their results of their last PTE exam. Until you receive the result of your last PTE test, you will not be able to register for a new one on the official PTE wrbsite.
  2. They have not already booked another PTE exam date. If you have booked a PTE test date, you will not be able to book another one. This is done to ensure that all the PTE test seats are taken by test takers at all times.

One can book another PTE test at a next convenient date after they have received the results of the previous test. In the light of above points, candidates can take their next PTE exam within a gap of 4-5 days, and this is the only criteria set by the board. Therefore, candidates can take the PTE Academic exam as many times as they want, with each attempt separated by a minimum of 5 days. They only need to wait to receive their scores before they can book their next test. Candidates should note that PTE Test Scores are made available to test takers within 2 days.

Q:   What are the qualifying marks for the PTE-A exam?

A:

The PTE Academic exam doesn't have a single "passing score" and the scores range from 10 (the lowest) to 90 (the highest). However, some universities abroad require you to have a CEFR B2 level of profeciency in the English language to pursue most of their programs.

The PTE scores eqyuivalent to the CEFR B2 level range from 59-75. Hence, any PTE score in within this range will qualify you to get admitted to most universities and courses abroad.

Q:   How can I boost my PTE score to 90?

A:

A prior knowledge of the exam pattern and the question types will help perform faster in the exam so that you will be able to give sufficient time to the questions that require critical thinking.

Q:   Is PTE easier than IELTS?

A:

Both the PTE Academic and IELTS have been designed to understand the English language proficiency of the candidate. They have been designed to test the writing, speaking reading, and listening skills of the test taker. Hence, both the tests are at par with each other and the candidate should opt for the one he is comfortable in. However, there are some points of differences that must be noted when making a decision, these are:

  1. The PTE exam (2 hours) is shorter than the IELTS exam (3 hours).
  2. All the segments (sections) of a PTE exam are tested within a day, in a single sitting. However, the different sections in an IELTS exam are assessed on different days.
  3. The IELTS exam tests speaking, listening, reading and writing proficiencies in the English language separately, which may not be appropriate for testing the real-life comprehension abilities of the test-taker. On the other side, the PTE exam tests all these skills simultaneously based on the belief that successful communication is developed by combining all these skills together.
  4. Your performance in a PTE exam is judged by AI, which leaves little to no room for human errors and any sort of bias. the scores awarded in this manner are mostly accurate. While, in an IELTS exam, a human examiner is present to test your overall English proficiency.
  5. Results can be expected within two days of taking the PTE exam, while the IELTS exam results are released later.

Q:   How should I prepare for the PTE to get 79+ marks?

A:

Whether through self-study or with the help of extra classes, candidates are always advised to give in their best during the examination. Referring to official PTE Study Material, solving multiple PTE Practice Papers and revising the PTE Syllabus is a good start.

Q:   Which is better - IELTS, TOEFL or PTE?

Below are some parameters that you can consider to make the best decision.
