The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is a mandatory licensing exam for Indian students and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), who have completed their medical degree abroad and want to practice medicine in India. The National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has announced the dates for FMGE June 2025 session. The FMGE is not an entrance exam for postgraduate studies, but rather a qualification for obtaining a license to practice medicine in India.

FMGE Exam

FMGE or Foreign Medical Graduate Exam is an important exam for those Indian students who want to practice in India after pursuing MBBS abroad. The National Board of Examinations (NBE) conducts this exam twice a year in June and December. According to the Official notification of NBE, the FMGE Examination Date is July 26, 2025. The application window for this was open between 28 April to 17 May 2025.

Candidates who have completed their MBBS in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and New Zealand are not required to appear for their FMGE exam. What is FMGE Exam?

The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination, more commonly referred to as the FMGE exam, is a medical licensing examination in India. The frequency of FMGE exam is twice a year, in June and December. It is mandatory to get a license to practice in India. Candidates who have submitted their application form for FMGE exam 2025 between 28 April to 17 May, can appear in the exam on 26 July 2025.

This medical licensing exam is mandatory to be undertaken by all Indian citizens or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders who have studied MBBS abroad and plan to practice in India by obtaining a provisional or permanent registration with the National Medical Commission.

To appear for FMGE, candidates should hold the provisional pass certificate/degree certificate of primary medical qualification and the certificate of eligibility (if required). Those who qualify for the exam obtain a screening test pass certificate which the NBEMS awards once the biometric/Face ID and relevant documents verification have been completed.

FMGE Exam Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who are citizens of India or Overseas Citizens of India and possess a primary medical qualification, which is confirmed by the Indian Embassy concerned, to be a recognized qualification for enrolment as a medical practitioner in the country in which the institution awarding the said qualification is situated, can apply for FMGE provided that the result of final examination for the said primary medical qualification has been declared on or before the prescribed cut-off date for a particular session of FMG Examination.

National Board of Examination - the conducting body of the FMGE has laid down the following eligibility guidelines for students wanting to appear for the MCI FMGE test.

  • The candidate is required to be a citizen of India or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder.
  • The candidate must possess a primary medical qualification which is equivalent to an MBBS degree from the country where the university awarding the degree is located.
  • The candidate must have completed his MBBS degree (primary qualification) before appearing for the FMGE test.

FMGE Exam 2025 Application Process

Candidates who qualify for the above-mentioned eligibility criteria are required to register for the FMGE test on the official National Board of Examination website. Here is the step-by-step process to complete the FMGE exam registration form.

  • Visit the official website of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Science
  • There you will find the "FMGE Exam" in the Examination section.
  • You will find an active link for the FMGE June/December session exam.
  • Follow the instructions mentioned on-screen and fill up the information asked there.
  • Cross-verify the details before submission.
  • At last, pay the FMGE exam application fee by using a credit or debit card. 

Note: It is also mandatory to qualify for the final exam for the Primary Medical Qualification, i.e. MBBS or Equivalent degree, on/before the given date.

Candidates who are appearing for the examination need to pay a non-refundable FMGE registration fee of INR 6,195 (Including GST). This amount includes the examination fee of INR 5,250 and 18% GST amounting to INR 945. Candidates can pay the application fee by using credit/debit cards of Indian banks through the payment gateway. No other mode of payment is accepted.

FMGE Exam Pattern 2025

Conducted by NBE, the FMGE examination is an online examination that requires candidates to solve 300 multiple-choice questions divided into two sections, i.e. Part A and Part B. Candidates would be given 150 minutes to solve each section. Those appearing for the exam will be given a break between the two marks. All the questions in the FMGE question paper will carry equal weight. One mark would be awarded for every correct answer, and no negative marking for an incorrect entry. According to the exam pattern of FMGE, a candidate needs to score at least 50% marks in the examination to qualify. The paper is set in the English language only.

FMGE 2025 Results

The National Board of Examinations will release the FMGE 2025 June Results on 26 August 2025. Candidates who have the credentials, like roll number, name, and Email ID, can download their scorecard. However, the FMGE results 2025 PDF will be easily available on the official website of NBE.

In the official announcement by NBE, the roll number of candidates, qualifying status (Pass/Fail), and score obtained out of 300 are mentioned. All the successful aspirants can get the certificate from the National Medical Commission.

FMGE Passing Marks

Q:   What is the purpose of FMGE exam?
A:

The FMGE is a licensing examination that allows Indian nationals who have pursued medical studies abroad to register with the National Medical Commission and work as registered medical practitioners in India. It is a mandatory exam for all indian students except who have studied in USA, UK, New Zealand, Australia and Canada.

Q:   Can I practice in India without FMGE?
A:

Yes, it is mandatory to pass the FMGE exam to practice in India after pursuing MBBS abroad. However, you are exempted from this exam if you have completed your MBBS from a university in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.

Q:   Can a candidate study in India if he has not cleared his FMGE exam?
A:

FMGE exam is a medical licensing exam. If the candidate has completed his undergraduate medical studies from abroad and wants to study further in India, he must qualify for the FMGE examination. However, candidates with an undergraduate medical degree from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United States of America or the United Kingdom, are exempted from FMGE.

Q:   How many times can a student attempt FMGE exam?
A:

There is no limit on number of attempts for a student. Any applicant can appear for the FMGE exam as many times as they want. However, it should be kept in mind that once a candidate qualifies for this exam, he or she cannot appear for it again.

Q:   Is there an age limit to appear for FMGE exam?
A:

There is no upper age limit for the FMGE Exam. Students who are eligibile on the basis of educational background can appear in the exam. It means, you should have a valid MBBS degree from a recognised medical college. 

In easy words, as long as you have a valid MBBS degree or equivalent from a recognised institution, you are eligible to appear for the FMGE, regardless of your age.

Q:   What is the acceptance rate of Hertfordshire University?
A:

The University of Hertfordshire has a 70% acceptance rate, making it easy to get into and having simple admissions requirements. Academic achievement, English language proficiency, references, and many other factors are taken into consideration while making the selection. At Hertfordshire, some programs may require four to five years of experience. To enroll in any programme at Hertfordshire University, students must meet the qualifying requirements. In addition, students with average performance can showcase their relevant experience or extracurricular activities participation to increase their selection probability.

Q:   How long does Hertfordshire University take to reply?
A:

After applying to Hertfordshire University UK, the applicants are going to receive an initial decision about their application within 2-3 working days. After the submission of the application and documents, the applicants are required to pay their tuition deposit. Then, complete the Sponsorship interview and the financial declaration. International students are required to pay a deposit of £5,000 before registration. The balance can be paid in line with the liability dates related to the year and entry of the semester.

Q:   How good is Coventry University (UK)?
A:

Coventry University is one of the renowned universities popular for its rankings, academic structure, facilities, research opportunities, and location. The university offers over 130 UG and 100 PG programs across four faculties. Coventry University also ranked no. 1 for student-staff ratio in midlands as per 'The Complete University Guide 2025' and rated gold for student experience as per the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF 2023).

To pass the exam, candidates have to score a minimum of 150 marks out of 300 in the examination. Students can check their results on the NBEMS website. Provision for re-totalling/re-evaluation does not exist. 

FMGE Exam Day Guidelines

Candidates appearing for the MCI FMGE test must follow the guidelines below.

  • Candidates would be required to download the FMGE Admit Card and mandatorily carry the same on the day of the exam. Without it, entry is prohibited. 
  • Candidates are required to bring along a valid, original, and non-expired government-approved photo ID proof (PAN card, driving license, voter ID, Aadhar card, and passport).
  • Candidates are required to reach the examination centre on or before the reporting time mentioned on the admit card.
  • Candidates cannot take their friends or relatives to the examination centre premises.

  • Checking will be done with thermo guns for COVID-19 infection at the entry point.

  • Identity checks will be carried out at the exam venue to make sure that only the registered candidates are appearing for the exam.

Things Not Allowed Inside the Examination Hall

  • Stationery items like pens, writing pads, notes, erasers, calculators, etc.
  • Electronic devices like cell phones, earphones, power banks, Bluetooth devices, wristwatches, etc.
  • Ornaments like chains, rings, earrings, badges, nose-pins, necklaces, etc.
  • Wallets, handbags, caps, belts, goggles, etc.
  • Eatable items

The FMGE results are announced online by its conducting body, the National Board of Examination (NBE). The result simply states whether the candidate has cleared the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination or not. Once available, candidates can download their MCI FMGE results in PDF format from the official website of NBE.

Candidates who successfully qualify for the MCI FMGE examination can collect their FMGE Pass Certificates in person from the office of the NBE. They would be required to produce the same to the Medical Council of India, which would then issue them their registration certificate, making them eligible to practice in India. Once released, candidates can check their respective results at the NBEMS website - natboard.edu.in and nbe.edu.in.

Hello Mir. If you are not able to qualify for the NEET exam You will not be able to practice in India. Thus appearing for the FMGE exam - which qualifies you to practice in India stands null and void.

Hello Swetha. No, she will not be allowed to practice in India. If she has studied MBBS in UK or USA she might be exempted from the FMGE exam. However, qualifying for the NEET is essential to be able to practice in India.
