B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering - Batch of 2026
4.6
5Placements5Infrastructure4Faculty5Crowd & Campus Life4Value for Money
A well-balanced campus with strong academics, good placements, and excellent facilities.
Placements: 98% placement rate. The highest package is 26 LPA, the lowest is 6 LPA, and the average package is 16 LPA. Companies like Bajaj Auto, Tata Steel, Reliance, JSW, etc., visit the campus. Around 55% get placed in companies, including Tata Steel, SAIL, Bajaj, Eeki, Reliance, etc. Roles include core mechanical, non-core, and tech positions. Some students go for higher studies at IITs, IISc, or foreign universities. There are also opportunities in PSUs like BHEL, GAIL, and IOCL through GATE. A few students join the armed forces (TES/CDS/SSB) or civil services.
Infrastructure: NIT Rourkela provides excellent infrastructure and facilities that support academics, research, and holistic student development. The environment is conducive to both personal and professional growth. Having a strong balance between academics, hostel life, and extracurricular activities.
Faculty: Faculty is supportive and well-qualified. The course offers a strong foundation in mechanical engineering and decent exposure to practical skills. With some additional effort from students (internships, online courses), it makes them industry-ready. Exams are fair, and the pass rate is high if you stay consistent.
Other: I chose Mechanical Engineering because it is a core engineering branch that provides a strong foundation in design, manufacturing, thermal systems, and mechanics. It opens up diverse career paths in both public and private sectors. Includes opportunities in R&D, automotive, aerospace, defense, and even civil services. Being a practical and application-oriented field, it suits my interest in understanding how machines and systems work. The best things about the course are a strong core foundation, excellent laboratories, and experienced faculty members.

A college in the Steel City of India.
Placements: The placement percentage is almost 100 (you will most likely get placed if you survive 4 years of college). The highest package is nearly 20 LPA, the average is 10.78 LPA, and the minimum is 4 LPA. Around 15โ€“20 out of 60 students get internships. In steel plants, we are posted as GETs (Graduate Engineer Trainees) in the starting phase. Many analytics companies also recruit. Many students go for off-campus placements for tech roles.
Infrastructure: We get 24 hours of Wi-Fi, and there are rare chances of power cuts. Mess food is okay. The library has AC and is open till 10 PM on normal days and till 6 PM on college holidays, Saturdays, and Sundays. There is a health center for basic medical facilities.
Faculty: The 85% attendance policy matters a lot. College faculty are almost similar to other colleges (some are good, and some are not so good). The curriculum is a little bit outdated, but this is a problem of all IITs and NITs in India. If you don't study at all, only then you will fail. Otherwise, faculty generally pass all students, except in Basic Electrical Engineering, Basic Electronics Engineering, and Engineering Mathematics.

College is overrated be prefer only if you're in that region. Students are great, peers good minds.
Placements: I am not sure about the current year, but according to previous year data, 95%+ students in the electrical batch are placed. However, the LPA is not as impressive as in the IT sector or semiconductor companies. I would say the average is around 50 students who got 30 LPA and above, 10-11 students got 50 LPA and above, 1 student got 1.2 crores, and 3 students got 98 LPA last year.
Infrastructure: Hostels are great, and food is also available with both veg and non-veg options. There is a separate mess for pure veg and Jain people with only a veg menu. I eat there, and the food quality is great. The infrastructure for electrical engineering is average, not great for inventions or projects, but all that is required for the course is available.
Faculty: Not all faculty members are non-cooperative, and they mostly help their regional students. Other students are ones who have to suffer more. The curriculum is hectic, with 85% attendance required, and exams are easy. There is no relative marking, so you can decide accordingly.
Other: I did all that in the above reviews, but I would like to add something if the attendance criteria were lower, it would be better, and adding some more new-generation courses would be beneficial.

Overall, it is satisfactory.
Placements: I am studying in the 2027 graduation batch and have completed the 2nd year of my B.Tech course. I am preparing for my internship season in the electronics sector. Top recruiting companies in my course include Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, Intel, etc. Around 90% of students get placed either in the electronics sector or the software domain.
Infrastructure: Department buildings are good, and facilities like Wi-Fi and study rooms are available. However, the hostel facilities where I live need improvement. The water tanks get empty at any time, and the washing machines need repair. The food quality is average and should be monitored from time to time.
Faculty: Teachers are very helpful, at least for my course. I have started as a research intern under one of my course teachers, and I am enjoying it. The course curriculum is relevant, but I think more industry-relevant topics need to be introduced. Semester exams are not that easy, but if one understands the concepts well, then it is not going to be a problem.

NIT Rourkela reviews about campus, faculty, and future goals.
Placements: Currently, I am in the 3rd year, and my department is Civil Engineering. To be honest, in Civil, high placements are relatively rare, and many students are focusing on coding. Last year, the highest package in Civil was 15.6 LPA, and the lowest package was around 4.3 LPA.
Infrastructure: Our classes are really good. The classrooms have digital boards and are AC. The department is also excellent. Our hostel rooms are quite nice, with two students sharing one room. The mess is very close to the hostel, and the hostel food is also very good.
Faculty: Professors at our NIT are highly qualified. Almost all of them have cleared IIT-level exams. They explain any questions very clearly. The courses offered by our department are helpful and extremely useful for our future jobs. Each semester lasts for 6 months. Every semester includes two main exams. They are mid and end-semester, which are quite tough to pass. The passing mark is 35 out of 100.
Other: In the future, I want to work in a government job, which is why I choose civil engineering. I will try for the UPSC exam.

Absolutely dissatisfied with faculty ! And placements are average, you'll only get a degree !
Placements: Well, placements of this college was very average only few of the batchmates will secure placements and the minimum salary of 3lpa which is like 25k per month this is not expected from a top tier NIT ! For mechanical students here in NIT Rourkela the average is around 6-8 LPA and the highest goes around 15lpa in the core jobs. The highest package mentioned in website are somewhat fake because it? S the package of a mechanical student who attended no core placements and coming to internship out 115-120 students only 1-2 will be selected for internship!
Infrastructure: For first years, the infrastructure of the hostel was way too bad It? S not even painted for 4-5 years ! Very small rooms are allocated to 2 people the rooms actually made for only one however they gave to two people and the Wi-Fi they don? T provide any outer we have to buy they just give a LAN port and drinking water facility in hostel only one purifier in block which is no good And the infrastructure of college and academic area was good no complain ! Library is well-equipped no issues.
Faculty: There are mixed up reviews on faculty ! Some are good some are literally not eligible even for teaching in the first semester we ended up wafting YouTube to study that? S how bad the faculty was ! The semester exams were a little tough and majority of the class passes except 5-10% of people !
Other: Well, here in Rourkela many of the faculty are based! They show partiality to Odisha students, they give more marks to them ! The events are very good in the college by the way ! The campus is very close to city which helps us a lot.
