My Overall Experience at Deakin University

Tips: The students need to be ready to study in an independent way because University study life here needs good time management and discipline. Being an international student, it was quite difficult for me to adapt to the culture and education system, but gradually I got used to it. I have not received any scholarships. On the whole, I am happy with Deakin University, my course, and studying in Australia.

Likes (Public transportation): The rating I gave for Public Transport is 5 since the campus is quite well connected by public transport and has a number of bus stops and tram stops directly outside the university premises. Traveling to and from the campus is therefore quite convenient, and the campus connects easily with the rest of Melbourne, including trains.

Dislikes (Value for money): I rated value for money as 1 because I feel the tuition fee at Deakin University is quite high, especially for international students. While the course provides useful academic knowledge and resources, I don't feel the overall experience and benefits fully justify the amount of tuition fees we pay.

Tips: Before you join any college, always consider the scholarship, campus feel, and expenses. I couldn't afford the city college, but would I choose the city campus? NEVER. Regional campuses give you more opportunities to live a better human life and not run in a rat race in a city. I have an average feeling about my university, but I am very proud of the course I chose and the country. Australia is the best country to reside in.

Likes (Permanent Immigration): As I studied at the Geelong campus, I got 10 extra points for my permanent residence. These 10 points are actually more important than you think. I never applied for permanent residence, but in the back of your mind, you have this stress. The regional campuses are also less expensive than the city campus, resulting in less stress to earn more and focus more on studies. I have firsthand seen people struggling on city campuses, and that is not the stress you want when you already have so much on your plate.

Dislikes (Quality of faculty): The Faculty itself is quite diverse and open, however, the way of teaching used was quite ineffective while I was a student there. However, I am aware that many things have changed since then. In many cases, the course material was just being read out of ODFs and other resources available at student portals. As a student, I can always read the material by myself, hence arises the question what else can be given to me in the offline class.

Very safe and friendly city.

Tips: There will be a lot of new challenges, making good friends, visiting your friends and buying a good health care card. Don't get caught for plagiarism, and manage your studies as well you didn't come all the way to just do part time, explore things and build your career.

Likes (Safety): I will tell you I have come back home at 3 am and absolutely nothing beats Melbourne's safety. Girls, you will actually understand what safety feels like and that's such a blessing. Staying abroad for girls is absolutely the best thing that can happen. Although watch out at times for junkies but otherwise you will be sooo fine.

Dislikes (Indian Food): Living in Melbourne as an Indian vegetarian has been quite a journey but I would say there are some things you can't get here. Dosa Hut and Brunetti in Flinders are my favourite places. In such a multicultural city, you find all kinds of cuisines. If you are a non-vegetarian you will have a great time. Food typically is 20-40 bucks depending on the place and amount.

Tips: If you have had some academic success in high school or undergrad, be sure to mention this in your application. I had scored 90%+ in class 12, which helped me avail a 20% scholarship for my course. There is no distinct cultural shift that I felt, given that you enter a buzzing multicultural society with plenty of fellow students from the Asian subcontinent. All in all, I was very satisfied with the way things went during my time at Deakin.

Dislikes (Internships): The university doesn’t help you with internships directly. Instead, it depends on how proactive the student is with respect to networking and finding potential opportunities. However, there are regular seminars that take place. If one can get out of their comfort zone and put themselves out there, there is no dearth of opportunities. I myself did 3 medium/ long-term internships during my time there.

Tips: Students should know that Deakin offers a supportive environment, modern facilities and a strong academic structure but independent learning is essential. My transition was smooth, though I did experience a cultural shift in terms of lifestyle, communication style, and the level of personal responsibility expected. I did not receive a scholarship, as most of them are merit-based and competitive. I'm very satisfied with the university, my course, and Australia as a whole , the country is safe, diverse, and offers great opportunities for growth.

Dislikes (Indian Food): There are mostly cafes, fast food, Asian places and a few Indian restaurants. Prices are usually $12-$18 for fast food, $20-$30 for casual dining and $30+ for nicer places. I like to cook my own food because eating out every day gets expensive and home-cooked food is way better.
