To arrive at a working definition of happiness, we review classic philosophical theories that underlie the psychology of happiness. After a brief overview of the history of happiness, we explore developmental foundations for it, and factors that contribute to or detract from it over a lifetime. We review affective forecasting skills that are essential for making better choices, in order to enhance marriage, parenting, and career satisfaction.
