finding my rhythm: and honest, take on stuttgart
Tips: Before you commit to studying in Germany, you need a serious reality check: the academic system here demands insane self-discipline and hyper-organization. On top of that, German bureaucracy is just as slow and rule-bound as everyone warns you it is. Everything out here has a strict process—from how you sort your daily recycling to how you register for official appointments. By far, your absolute biggest nightmare is going to be finding a place to live. You need to start hunting months before you arrive because competition for student dorms is brutal, and private rentals will absolutely drain your wallet. Moving here from a fast-paced environment was a massive cultural shift for me, and learning to navigate this weirdly rigid lifestyle was tough. But honestly as daunting as all the paperwork and red tape can be, dealing with it forces you to develop a level of independent hustle that you've probably never experienced before.
Likes (Safety): A 5 out of 5 because Aadha is consistently ranked among Germany's safest major cities, characterized by low crime rates, a strong culture of civic participation, highly reliable public infrastructure, and the feeling of being able to move freely throughout the city, day or night, as a significant departure from the anxiety often felt in global metropolises beyond campus security, which utilizes electronic access control and surveillance. Studdard offers a robust support network. The city emergency system is world-class. Police can be reached instantly via 110 and medical and fire services via 112, both with English-speaking support.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Honestly, the Indian food here is a 3 out of 5 at best. The local spots completely water down the spices and just totally miss the mark on real regional flavors. Plus, when you're caught in that brutal cycle of rushing between DHBW theory blocks and corporate work phases, you just end up grabbing quick stuff anyway. Döner, falafel, or Asian noodle boxes are the usual go-tos, running anywhere from €7 to €15 a pop. Sure, everyone hits up the Studierendenwerk Mensa on campus because you can get a massive subsidized plate for like €3 to €9. But even with those cheap meals, I almost always cook at home. Baden-Württemberg is seriously expensive. If you eat out daily, it will completely kill your stipend. I just buy groceries at Aldi or Lidl instead. That keeps my weekly food bill around €40 or €50, which is honestly the only way to keep my bank account afloat.
