Q:   What is a Good TOEFL Score?
A:

TOEFL Scores: There are no good or bad scores when appearing for the TOEFL test. Candidates would be required to meet the TOEFL score decided by the universities. anything above would increase their chances of getting admission into the university and any score below the range could serve as a roadblock in the admission process.

However, to make your test experience more personal and for you to understand your score better ETS has provided 4 to 5 proficiency levels for each skill. So where your score falls within that range tells you your proficiency for that skill. This will give you a fair idea about your performance, your strengths, sections that need improvement, and so on. Q:   How long should I study for the TOEFL?
A:

The ideal duration depends on the TOEFL test taker's English proficiency and target score. Generally, dedicating 3-6 months with consistent practice sessions should yield the desired TOEFL scores. TOEFL test takers are further advised to analyze their practice test scores and identify areas needing improvement to tailor their study plan.

Q:   How do I register for the TOEFL exam?
A:

Candidates can register for the TOEFL online through the official ETS website. The TOEFL fee for test-takers in India is INR 16,900. The slot booking of the TOEFL test dates and centres are done during registration only.

Q:   Is the TOEFL difficult for Indian students?
A:

Yes, the TOEFL exam is relatively difficult than other English tests. However, the difficulty is subjective and depends on your current English proficiency level and preparation. While challenges like vocabulary gaps and adapting to the computer format (for the iBT) are common, dedicated preparation can help Indian students excel. Utilize official ETS resources like practice tests and study guides, supplement with free online tools and consider coaching classes if needed. Remember, consistent practice and addressing specific weaknesses are key to success.

Q:   What is the passing score in TOEFL test?
A:

There is no such thing as a passing TOEFL score. Every university would have its TOEFL Score cut-off and students are required to achieve scores equal or higher than the set grade. Candidates should note that higher TOEFL scores would automatically increase their chances of securing a seat in the university and also make them a front runner for any scholarships being offered by the university.

Q:   Is TOEFL iBT paper based test discontinued?
A:

Yes, ETS has officially ended the TOEFL iBT Paper Edition on January 20, 2024. After that date, only the computer-delivered TOEFL iBT (at a test centre or via the Home Edition) remains available.

Q:   Can I take the TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE from home?
A:

Yes, TOEFL iBT offers a Home Edition, available in 200+ countries. IELTS has launched IELTS Online, but it is not available in all countries or for all visa types. PTE Academic Online is available for selected purposes but may not be accepted for all visa or immigration processes.

A:

The hardest part of the TOEFL test often depends on individual strengths and weaknesses. However, many test-takers find the speaking and writing sections to be the most challenging, as they require both language proficiency and critical thinking skills.

There are two tasks in the TOEFL writing section; one of them requires test takers to read a short passage, listen to a short lecture and finally, write your understanding of both. The other task requires test takers to state and support an opinion in a classroom discussion.

How to Send TOEFL Scores to Universities

If you are taking the TOEFL exam and want to apply to universities, you will need to send your TOEFL scores to those universities. You can do this directly from your ETS account. There are two ways to send your scores — before the test and after the test.

1. Send TOEFL Scores for Free (Before the Test)

You can choose up to 4 universities for free when you register for the TOEFL iBT test. ETS will send your scores to those universities automatically after your test is done.

You can also update or change the names of the universities until 10 p.m. (local test center time) the day before your exam.

Steps to do this:

  • Log in to your ETS TOEFL account
  • Go to “View Orders.”
  • Click on your upcoming test
  • Then click “Add/Modify Score Recipients.”
  • Search for the university name and select it

That’s it. These scores will be sent automatically and you won’t need to pay anything extra.

2. Send TOEFL Scores After the Test (Paid Option)

If you want to send your TOEFL scores to more than 4 universities, or you forgot to add them before the test, you can still send them later. But you will need to pay for it.

ETS charges $25 per university if you send the score after your test date.

How to send:

  • Log in to your ETS account
  • Go to “Send Additional Score Reports.”
  • Select the university
  • Make the payment ($25 per university)

After this, ETS will send the TOEFL score to the university. It usually takes 4 to 10 working days.

How are TOEFL scores sent?

Most universities accept TOEFL scores online, which is fast and safe. But some may still ask for printed (paper) scores. That takes more time.

To be sure, you can check the university website or contact their admissions team.

When will my TOEFL scores be sent?

  • Your TOEFL results are available in your ETS account in about 4 to 8 days after the test.
  • Once the scores are ready, ETS will send them to the universities you selected.
  • If the university accepts digital reports, they may get it within a week. If it’s by post, it can take longer.

TOEFL Cut Off

There are no minimum passing marks required for the TOEFL exam as each university or educational institution decides its score range or minimum score required. There is no such thing as a TOEFL cut off as each university will set its score range according to its requirements. Score requirements at universities do not change often, and score requirements can vary widely depending on the university and the specific program of study. Thus, you need to keep a check on the changes brought in by the universities by keeping a check on their website for any such updates.

A:

Q:   How are TOEFL Scores calculated?
A:

For calculating TOEFL scores, both human raters and automated scoring methods are used. This is done to offer a complete and accurate picture of the candidate’s ability. While the automated scoring method has the advantage of being unbiased, it does not measure the effectiveness of the language and content. Human raters are required to attend to a wider variety of features, such as the quality of ideas and content as well as form. Also, you are expected to answer at least one question in all sections. For reading and listening, you should answer at least one question. For writing and speaking, you must attempt one task each. For the online TOEFL iBT test, the result is four-scaled along with a total score.

The overall TOEFL iBT scores are calculated by adding the scores obtained in 4 different sections of the exam namely reading, writing, listening and speaking. Candidates who have appeared for their TOEFL exam will receive four scaled section scores and a total score. Each section has a score range of 0–30. These are added together for a total score of 0–120.

Hello Nikhil. Hope you are doing well. I seem to have overlooked your comment and my apologies for the same. I am guessing you have got your results by now. Reading the question out loud should not ideally affect your TOEFL test scores.
