GMAT Eligibility Criteria 2026

The official eligibility criteria for GMAT Exam (Focus Edition) in 2026 are very open. The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) wants it to be accessible for everyone. Still, here are some practical requirements that one must meet if they want to give the test. Here is the breakdown of the GMAT eligibility rules:

1. Age Limit

The GMAC sets a lower age limit and also a minimum age to be eligible for GMAT exam. Applicants must be able to fulfil these age criteria before they register for GMAT so that they are able to get their scores.

  • Minimum Age: You must be at least 18 years old.

  • Exception: If you are between 13 and 17 years old you are eligible only if you provide a written permission letter (NOC) from a parent or legal guardian.

  • Maximum Age: There is no upper age limit.

2. Academic Qualification

Though there is no minimum academic qualification that is specified under GMAT eligibility policies, but for admissions, there is one. Usually those in the final year of graduation or while working take GMAT. Get more details below:

  • For the Exam: There is no minimum educational qualification required to register for the GMAT. Applicants do not need a specific percentage in their 10th, 12th, or graduation to take the test.

  • For Admissions: While applicants can take the exam without a degree, universities will still need a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university to admit them into an MBA or MIM program.

3. ID Proof (Critical for Indian Students)

To be eligible to appear for GMAT in 2026, there are some important rules around ID acceptance. This is most strictly enforced rule. Applicants must follow what they must have before they take their GMAT exam.

  • GMAT Test Centres: Applicants MUST have a valid Passport.

    • Warning: Aadhaar Cards, PAN Cards, and Driver's Licenses are NOT accepted at test centers in India. If applicants do not have a passport, they will be denied entry.

  • GMAT Online Exam: The Aadhaar Card is technically accepted for the GMAT Online exam (taken at home), but a Passport remains the safest option to avoid verification issues.

4. Number of Attempts

Applicants who retake GMAT exam also have to ensure that they don't surpass their individual limits. This is another part of GMAT eligibility where applicants must know how many times they can retake GMAT:

  • Yearly Limit: Applicants can take GMAT up to 5 times in a 12-month period.

  • Overall Limit: Applicants can take GMAT a maximum of 8 times in their lifetime.

5. Minimum Work Experience

The eligibility for GMAT based on work experience is different from that of B-School admissions. Many working professionals attempt the GMAT exam, but they need not have any work experience to take the GMAT.

  • Work Experience for GMAT: There are no work experience eligibility criteria to take the GMAT.
  • Pro Tip: Having relevant work experience will always give you an added advantage while applying to a B-school.

Applicants must note, that they must not create different accounts using alternative email addresses to avoid any of the policies above. If caught doing so and bypassing GMAT eligibility criteria applicants may be banned from taking the GMAT exam from new or previously existing accounts.

According to the GMAC, any individual irrespective of gender, age, nationality, religion, academic background, differently abled etc. is eligible to appear for the GMAT exam without any discrimination.

Navigating GMAT Eligibility for MBA Admissions in 2026

Students need to remember that the GMAT eligibility criteria are different from the MBA admissions criteria. Most MBA admissions require a student to complete his/her undergraduate degree. Some of them might even specify a cut-off GPA. Moreover, certain MBA colleges might ask for compulsory work experience as well. However, when it comes to the GMAT eligibility criteria, there are no such requirements concerning an undergraduate degree, work experience, etc.

Importance of GMAT in MBA Admission Abroad

GMAT is a crucial assessor for offering admissions to MBA abroad aspirants. While more than 70% of B-schools accept GMAT scores for admisson, there may be a few who may not need it or may waive the requirement. Here is how GMAT plays an important role for MBA admissions:

  • The GMAT exam evaluates applicants' analytical, quantitative, and verbal reasoning skills, which are essential for MBA admissions.
  • GMAT score allows admission committees to compare applications with those of other applicants.
  • A strong GMAT score shows the applicant's dedication and preparation for an MBA.
  • Not to miss, there are some B-schools which may give scholarships based on GMAT scores.
  • Though it is recommended to attempt the GMAT exam to get enrolled in a reputed business school because many B-schools prefer GMAT scores, it is not mandatory to have appeared for this exam to study abroad.

Note: Also, a huge list of management colleges worldwide does not require a GMAT score to evaluate an applicant's profile for MBA admissions. All they need is the previous academic record which justifies the capabilities or some work experience that defines your candidature.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   I want to go for MBA in US, should I give GMAT or GRE?
A:
If you want to do MBA, then GMAT is more effective. It depends on you whether you want to go for GRE.
Q:   Which exam is better among GMAT and GRE to study MBA abroad?
A:
As you are planning to go for an MBA, GMAT is preferred over GRE. Both the tests are accepted in most universities but almost all B schools would look forward to high scores with no particular preference. Ideally, you must see & have mocks for both tests to compare, which one suits you more & you may have higher chances of getting better percentile/scores. We have seen students from engineering background generally opting for GRE since that solves both requirements of going in technical or management so its really dependent on your liking & performance in either of tests.
Q:   I am applying for MBA but I have a gap year, can I still sit for GMAT?
A:

You can still give GMAT even if you have a gap year or backlog. Though backlog details may not be required when registering for GMAT exam, but will be required during the admission process.
