Mistakes to Avoid While Registering for TOEFL Exam

Registering for the TOEFL iBT exam through your ETS account is simple, but small errors can cause big problems. Common mistakes include being denied entry on test day, losing your fee, or needing to reschedule at an extra cost. Based on official ETS guidelines and student feedback, here are the most frequent TOEFL registration mistakes and how to avoid them.

1. Name Mismatch with Official ID

Your full name (first, middle, and last) in your ETS profile must match your passport or government-issued ID letter for letter. This includes spelling, order, and capitalization. Using a nickname or reversing names often leads to admission refusal on test day.

  • How to avoid it: Double-check your passport before starting registration. Enter details exactly as they appear. Update your profile early if you notice a mismatch.

2. Providing Invalid ID Information

Entering a wrong passport number or using an expired ID will block your check-in. Many students only notice these errors days before the exam, when it is difficult to edit them.

  • How to avoid it: Have your valid passport ready during registration. Review all ID numbers and expiry dates before confirming the payment.

3. Last-Minute Registration

Waiting until the deadline leads to limited slots at popular TOEFL test centres (especially in high-demand areas like Delhi) or triggers a late fee.

  • How to avoid it: Register 3 to 4 months early for the best choice of dates and locations. Check real-time seat availability on the official ETS website before planning.

4. Creating Duplicate ETS Accounts

Attempting to create a new account when you already have one (from a previous TOEFL or GRE attempt) triggers "duplicate account" errors. This can lock your profile and delay your booking.

  • How to avoid it: Always use your existing login. If you forgot your password, use the "Recover Account" feature rather than creating a new profile.

5. Technical Issues During Payment

Browser errors or unstable internet can leave your registration "pending" even if money is deducted. Using third-party agents for payment also increases the risk of fraud or failed transactions.

  • How to avoid it: Use a stable connection and a recommended browser like Chrome or Firefox. Pay directly using accepted credit/debit cards or official vouchers.

6. Missing the Free Score Report Window

Many test-takers forget to select their 4 free score recipients during registration. Adding these institutions after the 10 PM (local time) deadline.

  • How to avoid it: Have your university codes ready. Select your four institutions during the checkout process to save on additional costs.

Hello Nikhil. Hope you are doing well. I seem to have overlooked your comment and my apologies for the same. I am guessing you have got your results by now. Reading the question out loud should not ideally affect your TOEFL test scores.
