Those who plan to study abroad often come across a letter of recommendation as a major requirement. LORs are written by those who know you or have taught you in school or college.
Before you request for an LOR from the right recommender you will have to either show them some LOR samples or help them understand the requirements. LOR samples are essential to understand how they are written and presented to Ad coms abroad. LORs play a crucial role in understanding the applicant, so writing an LOR with all necessary details is important.
LOR samples are not just course-specific; they are also bifurcated based on academics and professional ones. What are LOR Samples?
LOR samples are examples that show how LORs are structured and formatted for admissions, scholarships and even jobs abroad. A common LOR format is simple; there is an introduction, evaluation of academic or professional skills, personal qualities, a recommender's recommendation and a conclusion. How ex-students have structured their LORs previously and got into their preferred colleges or jobs is what makes sample LORs important to consider.
Types of LOR Samples
Broadly, there are two main types of LORs - academic and professional. Both of them serve a different purpose and are written by different designated individuals. Here is a brief comparison between the two types of letters of recommendation, followed by samples:
| Feature | Academic LOR | Professional LOR |
|---|---|---|
| Written by | Professors, teachers, or academic advisors. | Supervisors, managers, or colleagues. |
| Core Focus | Learning ability, research potential, and GPA. | Work ethic, leadership, and technical skills. |
| Typical Use Case | Graduate school or scholarship applications. | Job applications, MBAs, or promotions. Even used for MBA admission abroad. |
| Success Metric | Grades, class rank, and intellectual curiosity. | Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and projects |
| Used for | UG / PG courses | To show work experience and key skills |
Both types of LOR are used for MBA admission abroad, which also depends on the university-specific requirements. Sometimes universities may require either a professional LOR or resume.

| SAMPLE LOR FOR UG COURSES It is with great pleasure that I am writing this letter of recommendation for XXXX for the undergraduate course in your distinguished university. He has been my student for the subject of English at Apeejay School, Noida for two years, that is grades 11 and 12. I am also his class teacher in 12th grade and have been teaching in the school for 15 years. During my period of association with XXXX, I found him courteous, initiator and passionate about his studies. He has an exquisite vocabulary and is fluent in speaking. XXXX has an inquisitive mind, always wanting to learn more and to get to the root of the matter. Whenever he has a doubt, he does not rest until he reaches a satisfactory conclusion. Owing to his curiosity, he is usually the initiator of fruitful classroom discussions. It was impressive to see XXXX display a level of creativity, wit, and analytical thought that is quite rare among high school students. He is always thinking outside the box as he showcased with his exceptional physics project of Bluetooth remote controlled car. It was a unique and attractive idea that caught attention of all the faculties present as well as his fellow classmates. XXXX is really energetic and displays immense interest in sports. He also maintains likeliness with his peers and teachers. He has an impressive skill for solving problems on the spot as he displayed end number of times throughout his school year while helping in various events.
XXXX’s academic strengths are complemented by his demonstrated leadership skills. He was the Event Head for CODE (confluence of digital experts), the biggest event of the school in which over 50 schools participate every year. He was also the green champion for three years. In all these endeavours, I saw him taking the lead in encouraging his peers and making events successful. Meticulous in his approach, XXXX has an eye for details and perfection. Keeping in mind his capabilities, I am confident that he will excel in whatever he decides, to pursue. In conclusion, with extreme pleasure, I highly recommend XXXX for admission to your esteemed university.

Sample LOR for Masters
Those applying for a Master's can refer to an LOR sample for MS in the table below:
| SAMPLE ACADEMIC LOR As an <designation> in the School of Computer Science Engineering & Technology at XXXX University, Greater Noida, I write this letter in strong and enthusiastic support of XXXX’s application for admission to a Master’s program. From January to May 2025, I directly co-supervised a two-person undergraduate research team in which XXXX was a core member. The team completed a research paper titled ‘A Multistage Pipeline for Generating Symbolic Music with Deep Learning Architectures’. It will now be submitted for publication. XXXX received an A+ grade for his research, reflecting the quality and consistency of his contribution throughout. The quality that distinguished XXXX was his instinct to treat an engineering problem as a scientific question. Rather than simply running experiments and reporting results, he took ownership of the evaluation design, identifying what metrics would meaningfully capture the quality of generated music, justifying each choice from the literature, and leading the interpretation of results across architectures. While most students at this stage execute what they are told, XXXX asked whether what he was being told to measure was the right thing to measure. Furthermore, I was impressed by XXXX’s ability to reason clearly under genuine ambiguity. Early in the project, he independently recognized that standard accuracy metrics alone were insufficient to evaluate music generation – a model that predicts the next note correctly tells you nothing about whether the resulting composition is musically coherent or stylistically original. He proposed and implemented a multi-dimensional evaluation framework covering creativity, coherence, and diversity, alongside accuracy. He also insisted on including a structured qualitative listening evaluation, arguing that a paper on music generation that relies solely on numbers fails to communicate what the reader most needs to know. He was right, and the paper is stronger for it. I also want to highlight XXXX’s sense of ownership during the research. The project ran alongside his coursework and prior commitments. Despite this, he never missed a scheduled research meeting and consistently delivered on milestones. His contribution to the manuscript extended well beyond the technical sections. He understood that a paper on generative AI in music is incomplete without engaging the legal and ethical context around AI-generated content, and he took responsibility for that aspect of the work himself. He treated the paper as his own rather than as an assignment to complete, which makes XXXX a genuine research collaborator. XXXX is an intellectually honest, technically capable, and genuinely motivated young researcher. I recommend him for admission to your Master’s program with full confidence. He will bring both capability and intellectual generosity to your research environment, and I have no doubt he will distinguish himself in graduate study. Please feel free to reach out to me for any further information.

LOR Sample for MBA
Many B-schools abroad do not directly require an LOR. In fact there are a set of questions on the university portal that have to be answered by the recommender. Here is one such example below treated as an LOR sample for MBA abroad:
| SAMPLE MBA LOR Q1. Please state how long you have known the candidate and in what capacity (as a teacher, tutor, coworker etc.) As a Consultant at ZS Associates, I have known XXXX for over three years as a valuable member of the Incentive Compensation and Commercial Strategy space. He has been leading a team of 30 under my guidance for one of our biggest portfolios in his role of Associate Consultant.
Q2. Please give your assessment of the aspirant including a description of both academic/professional and personal characteristics. Your assessment will greatly help us differentiate the candidate from other applicants. Please write a recommendation of at least 250 words. I have supervised XXXX for over three years across multiple engagements, including our current project where he is supporting one of our largest global portfolios and leading a cross-cultural team of more than 20 members across business units and geographies. According to me, XXXX has a remarkable quality of understanding, engaging, and developing the people around him. While coordinating across internal stakeholders, clients, or other teams, he builds trust quickly and brings clarity without relying on hierarchy. He treats leadership not as a title attached to his role, but as a daily practice. Currently, he is working with me to help a client set up their in-house expertise center where he is not only demonstrating his expertise but also leading a room and keeping everyone involved. He is filled with energy and his work has earned praise from clients several times. One of the projects got off to a rocky start and the team was not able to deliver up to their potential. XXXX went well beyond his role, taking the initiative to understand the underlying bottlenecks through focused daily check-ins to realign the team. That project ultimately became one of the most successful engagements in the team that quarter, and since then, the client has become a long-term partner. As a result, XXXX was trusted to lead teams, develop business, and handle multiple global client engagements directly. XXXX’s promotion from an Associate to an Associate Consultant is marked by a clear growth in his maturity. He has become more intentional in how he delegates, and more thoughtful in how he enables others to contribute. Team members working under his supervision consistently seek his guidance because he creates an environment where people feel supported, trusted, and accountable. XXXX’s initiative in identifying opportunities to improve how we design and manage incentive compensation programs reflects his ability to combine innovation with responsibility. Recognizing gaps in current workflows, he proposed and built AI-enabled tools and workstreams to support incentive design. What began as an idea is now being actively integrated into our client offerings, reducing design time by approximately 50% while also reducing human involvement. On a personal level, XXXX is resilient and deeply committed to learning. He welcomes feedback, adapts quickly, and consistently raises the bar for himself and those around him. During his initial days at ZS, I provided XXXX with direct feedback on stakeholder and time management. He internalized my suggestion and demonstrated consistent improvement by communicating more clearly with stakeholders and managing competing demands with greater maturity. XXXX listens carefully, weighs perspectives, and communicates his reasoning clearly and respectfully, even when opinions differ. During a post-acquisition strategy project, senior leadership and the client were inclined toward a data-driven direction that did not fully reflect on-ground realities. Instead of challenging this directly, he collated differing perspectives into a broader recommendation that incorporated sales-force impact, sustainability, feasibility, and long-term operational considerations. It has been a pleasure guiding him, working with him, and watching him grow. |
2. Professional LOR Sample
Do you have to submit a professional LOR for your admission application abroad? Below is a sample LOR written by professionals for students with previous work experience:
| SAMPLE PROFESSIONAL LOR Having known Ms. XXXX for six months during her tenure in Category Management at <company>, I am pleased to write this recommendation for her. In my role as <designation> in the Category team, I was XXXX’s reporting manager and guided her contributions to assortment strategy and category performance. She consistently demonstrated a proactive approach and strong analytical capabilities, distinguishing herself as a dependable and high-performing member of the team. XXXX demonstrated a strong ability to work with data and translate insights into actionable decisions. By analysing sales trends, search behaviour, and competitor performance, she identified gaps in the category and proposed improvements to product assortment and visibility. She identified underperforming sub-categories and recommended optimising the assortment by introducing higher-demand styles and improving product visibility during key sales periods. This intervention contributed to improved conversion rates and played a key role in driving a 21% increase in category GMV. Beyond her analytical skills, XXXX showed a high level of ownership in her work. During festive campaigns, she took responsibility for coordinating across teams, including marketing, merchandising, and brand partners, to ensure the timely execution of launches and promotions. She enhanced product visibility by refining product attributes and improving creative content. This resulted in clearer product communication and a user-friendly experience across the app and web platforms. She handled responsibilities with a level of maturity and involvement expected from a senior-level associate. As a professional, XXXX demonstrated strong stakeholder management capabilities by evaluating and onboarding multiple brands within a short timeframe. She proactively addressed challenges related to app glitches and incorrect product visibility for certain brands. By collaborating with respective teams, she resolved these issues efficiently, ensuring smoother operations and improved customer experience. Overall, I can confirm that she is a driven and capable individual with a strong foundation in analytical thinking and business understanding. I am confident that she will thrive in a demanding academic environment and continue to achieve excellence in her professional career. I recommend Ms. XXXX without reservation and wish her success in her future endeavours.

How to Use Sample LORs Effectively?
Sample LORs can be used effectively not just as a reference but also to understand how they fulfil the requirements of a given university. For this, applicants can avoid some common mistakes before writing their LORs after refering to a couple of them:
- Refer to different letters of recommendation that helped students get in, and also those based on which they got rejected. Analyse the two and then use the best one.
- Next, read the LORs, but do not blindly copy from them. Plagiarism is treated strictly by Ad Coms.
- Make sure you choose a recommender who knows you well and writes as accurately about you as possible, based on the sample LORs above.
- Sample LORs will help you understand that there is a flow of thoughts that is also necessary to make your LOR stand out.
In the end, sample LORs are a starting point for writing. These can be shared with the recommenders, and they must also be told not to follow them word by word, but add some elements of their own before they submit.

Sample LOR FAQs
Commonly asked questions
The key differentiation factor of an MBA LOR is its professional approach behind it. While the LOR will talk about your aptitude and eligibility as a future manager and leader, it is also essentially about setting you up as a good prospective candidate for the MBA program. Instead of focusing on technical prowess, you must include instances where you showcased your managerial acumen or leadership skills.
While you may go through the sample LORs to get an idea about the format and content, it is not advisable to copy any part of the sample. Keep the LORs unique and authentic. Plagiarism should be strictly avoided.
3–4 well-substantiated traits are ideal, as per most expert LOR guidelines. The key to an effective LOR is to include the traits which are relevant to the programme you are applying for. A letter of recommendation, which is full of traits, but without detailed explanation or specific instances justifying those traits, will not create a good impression. As per the guidelines for writing LOR, a letter should focus on mainly three to f our traits, which can be substantiated with examples.
