The TOEFL syllabus is not like a school syllabus with specific chapters or books to memorize. Instead, it tests your ability to use English in college. If you want to study abroad, you must practice four main skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.
The TOEFL syllabus 2026 has changed to make the test shorter and more direct. In the Reading section, you will read short passages and solve "Complete the Words" questions. You do not have to read very long academic texts anymore. The Listening section now has quick conversations and announcements that are less than one minute long. This makes it easier to focus.
For the Speaking section, the syllabus includes a new "Listen and Repeat" task where you just say back what you hear. You also have an interview part. The Writing section is very different now. You must know grammar well for the "Build a Sentence" task.
Overall, the new TOEFL syllabus focuses on real-life English usage. It is designed to check if you can survive in a foreign university. Because the tasks are shorter, many students feel the new TOEFL exam is less tiring than before.

You will also read short academic passages of about 200 words and answer multiple-choice questions. This section tests your reading comprehension, vocabulary, and understanding of academic English. You get 18 to 27 minutes to complete this section.
TOEFL Listening Syllabus
The TOEFL Listening section is also adaptive. It checks how well you understand spoken English. In this part, you will listen to short sentences and choose the correct reply. This section tests your listening skills, focus, and understanding. The total time is 18 to 27 minutes.
TOEFL Speaking Syllabus
The TOEFL Speaking section is also fixed and tests your spoken English. First, you will listen to seven sentences and repeat them exactly. There is no preparation time. You must speak after the beep. The total time for this section is 8 minutes.
