Q:   What are some important points to consider before booking the GMAT exam date?

A:

Before booking your GMAT exam date, there are several points you should consider to ensure a smooth and successful test-taking experience. Here are some important factors to keep in mind:

  • Preparation Time: Assess your readiness for the GMAT exam and determine how much time you need to adequately prepare. Consider your familiarity with the test content and your target score. Give yourself enough time to study effectively and build your skills.
  • Test Center Availability: Check the availability of test centers in your desired location. It is advisable to book your slot well in advance to secure your preferred test center and date.
  • Scheduling Flexibility: Consider any personal or professional commitments that may affect your GMAT exam preparation. Choose a GMAT exam date that meets your personal and professional commitments.
  • Application Deadlines: Research the application deadlines of the programs you plan to apply to. Make sure you book your exam date early enough to have your scores ready for submission within the required timeframe. Moreover, keep time for preparation of MBA application documents such as a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, etc.
  • Retake Policy: Familiarize yourself with the GMAT retake policy. Factor-in the time you might require to retake the GMAT.
  • Test Preparation: Consider your study plan and the resources you need to prepare effectively. Evaluate your study materials, practice tests, and any additional support you may require. Ensure you have enough time to study and practice before your chosen exam date. You may require anywhere between 3-6 months to prepare for the GMAT exam.
  • Personal Readiness: Take into account any personal factors that may affect your performance, such as health issues or other commitments. Choose a date when you feel mentally and physically prepared for the GMAT exam.

Booking your GMAT exam date is a crucial part of your preparation process, so keep that in mind. Consider these ideas carefully, then decide what will work best for your objectives and situation. Wishing you success as you study for the GMAT!

Q:   What is the right time to book a GMAT slot?

A:

Candidates should book the GMAT slot at least 3 to 5 months prior to the admission deadlines for their desired university. Moreover, it is better to book the GMAT slot at least 3-6 months prior to your desired test date. As you will get plenty of time to prepare for the exam. Consider the following points before GMAT slot booking:

  • Let us say that your University application deadline is 1st November.
  • Now consider 6 months’ time prior to 1st November, i.e. 1st May. Hence, from 1st May onwards you need to consider GMAT preparation + GMAT slot booking + application document preparation.
  • If you have time, then you can prepare for the GMAT beforehand only so that you have sufficient time to prepare your admission documents and choose a GMAT slot of your choice.

Make sure that you research all the factors such as the time required for GMAT exam preparation, document preparation, university deadlines, etc. It is crucial for students to take into account every aspect of their study-abroad application to avoid any last minute hassles.

Checking Into the GMAT Exam Centres in India

There are certain rules that candidates should keep in mind while going to the GMAT test centre. These are some important policies that you should know as if a candidate violates any of these then his/her scores can be cancelled by the GMAC. Whether GMAT test centres in Mumbai or GMAT centres in Bangalore, one should always abide by the rules and regulations set by their GMAT exam centre.

  • Identity Proofs: Make sure that you carry valid ID Proof. The GMAT Test Centres of India consider a Passport for identity verification.
  • Appointment Confirmation Letter/Email: You should bring the letter of acceptance/confirmation that you would receive from the exam centre.
  • Palm Vein Scan: As part of the test centre check-in process, test-takers need to provide their palm vein pattern as proof of identification. The palm vein identification technology helps in maintaining a single GMAT record of the test taker, preventing impersonators from taking the test on behalf of others.
  • Digital Signature and Photograph: Provide your digital signature stating that you understand and agree to the Test Taker rules and agreement. You also need to provide your digital photograph.
  • College/Course List: You may bring the list of universities/programme names to which you would like to send your GMAT scores after you accept them.
  • Reach Early: It is always better to reach the GMAT exam centre early to have time to relax. Try to reach 30 minutes before the scheduled GMAT time.

Personal Items Allowed in the GMAT Examination Centres in India

A lot of items are prohibited on the GMAT exam premises. The list of things allowed in the GMAT centre is as follows:

  • Identity Proof of the Examinee
  • Spectacles
  • Light sweater or light non-outerwear jacket
  • Comfort items like woollen clothes, or support pillow for the neck or back, or any other injured part of your body (only if they have been approved in the GMAT testing accommodation)

Test Centre Special Procedures

After the COVID-19 pandemic, testing has been started again worldwide. To ensure the health and safety of the test takers and the staff, the GMAC has introduced new procedures at test centres. Offering hand sanitiser, and wipes, maintaining social distancing, and enhancing cleaning procedures are part of the enhanced health and safety measures. Also, test takers need to wear a face mask throughout the duration of the exam.

Q:   What am I not allowed to bring to the GMAT test centre?

A:

Students must be aware of what all they can bring and what all is not allowed at a GMAT test centre. Students are not allowed to bring food, drink, and candy with them (unless these have been approved in the GMAT testing accommodation). In addition to these, students cannot bring firearms, knives, or any other weapon-like object. Students are allowed to bring a valid identity document, an appointment confirmation letter or email (received from Pearson VUE), eyeglasses, light sweater or light non-outerwear jacket, and any other comfort item (only if they have been approved in the GMAT testing accommodation).

Q:   Should I study just before the GMAT exam at the test centre?

A:

GMAT exam preparation typically takes about 3-6 months. If you have studied well during this duration, given sufficient number of mock tests, and revised your notes, you need not study just before the exam at the GMAT test centre. It is important for you to focus on the GMAT exam. Rather than shuffling through your notes at the last moment, it is advisable that you take your time to calm your nerves down. For the next few hours, your focus must be to ace the exam. Have faith that whatever you have studies so far was sufficient for you to score well on the GMAT.

Q:   When is the GMAT result available?

A:

The candidates receive almost the entire GMAT Score Report just after finishing the GMAT test except for the AWA Score. The candidate will have the option of accepting it or rejecting it. In the case of accepting the result, the candidate and the institutes of choice can view the result; but if the candidate declines the result none of the parties will be able to view the GMAT result. Once the exam is over, candidates can download the non-official GMAT result. Finally, the candidates receive the complete GMAT Score Report within 7-20 days of giving the test including the AWA Score.

Q:   How to send my GMAT scores to B-schools?

A:

GMAT scores can be sent in two ways to B-schools. In the case of the test centre GMAT exam, students can select up to 5 programmes to which they wish to apply without any additional cost. After this, every additional GMAT score report is chargeable at $35 each. In the case of an online GMAT exam, a candidate can send his/her scores to 5 B-Schools within 48 hours of receiving the official GMAT score. If he/she wants to send his/her GMAT scores to more B-Schools or programmes, every additional GMAT Score report shall be chargeable at $35 each. It is important for the candidates to select the right courses/programmes beforehand. In order to do this, it is advised that research different programmes, their GMAT cut offs, career outcomes, etc.

Know the Rules to Avoid GMAT Score Cancellation

Learn the GMAT exam testing rules agreement and understand test policies to avoid policy violations that may result in score cancellation. GMAC may cancel or withhold your GMAT score if it feels that:

  • A testing issue has happened according to the test administrator/proctor.
  • There are administrative errors.
  • There are payment or registration errors.
  • Test questions have been compromised.
  • There were disruptions at the GMAT test centre and these disruptions were out of your control.
  • You have violated the policies of the GMAT exam.
  • Your score is invalid for any other reason.

In case of such an event, a candidate may appeal to the GMAC within 30 days (GMAC may change the appeal window time) from the cancellation of his/her GMAT score. Hence, the candidates need to follow every rule and policy laid down by the GMAC for the GMAT exam. Make sure that you read and follow the instructions given by the GMAC.

GMAT Testing Accommodations

On the GMAT exam date, if a student feels that he/she is unable to take the GMAT exam under the standard situation, he/she may apply for the GMAT exam accommodations. Students need to note that they should not book their GMAT exam appointment until they receive approval for the GMAT testing accommodation. Students are eligible for the GMAT testing accommodations for the online and test centre GMAT exams, both.1

The following points provide details of testing accommodations:

  • Create your profile on the official GMAT website. Do not register for the GMAT exam until you receive a final decision on your testing accommodation.
  • Read the GMAT handbook and the GMAT Supplement for Test Takers with Disabilities.
  • Collect the required documents for the following disabilities (as the case may be):
    • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
    • Learning and Cognitive Disabilities
    • Physical/Systemic Disabilities
    • Psychological Disabilities
    • Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Blind/Low Vision
  • Visit the ‘Apply for Accommodations’ option and submit your request by attaching the relevant documents. Once you submit the request, you will receive a confirmation email. Your request will also be available on your official GMAT account within 24 hours. GMAC may take around 16-20 business days to revert. Under certain circumstances, it might take longer as well.
  • With the help of GMAT testing accommodations, you may receive additional time, rest breaks, a reader to read, a recorder to record your answers, etc. depending on your request and situation.

If the testing accommodations were approved in the last 2 years and if the documents provided by a candidate still hold relevance, a student need not submit the documents again. He/she can just apply for the Accommodation Request Form.

Q:   If I have booked a slot at the GMAT test center, but due to restrictions in my area, can I transfer that registration to a GMAT online exam?

A:

If a candidate has booked a slot at the test center it cannot be rescheduled to a different mode for that attempt. Candidates need to book the GMAT online exam again to attempt the test online. When it comes to GMAT slot booking, we advise that candidates show caution. Before you decide your GMAT exam date, make sure to go through the different study abroad intakes, MBA or MIM admission deadlines, your current GMAT preparation level, time required to reach your desired GMAT score, time required to prepare your admission documents (SOP, LORs, Admission Essays, etc.), etc.

Q:   Do I need to renew my approval for the GMAT testing accommodations for every GMAT exam attempt?

A:

Those who have already booked the GMAT exam and have got the approval for GMAT testing accommodations need not apply for it again for their subsequent GMAT exams as the approval for accommodations is typically valid for two years. In case if your GMAT testing accommodation approval has expired, you need to visit the Testing Accommodation pages and apply for the accommodations. You must complete the form and mention that you had received an approval earlier. It is advised that the students attach their original decision letter as a part of their fresh request.

How is the GMAT 2024 Exam Delivered?

The GMAT exam is delivered only on a computer to maintain consistency and fairness. The computer exam allows:

  • Tests around the world on any day
  • The user to track their time and progress on the exam by letting you know the number of questions that they need to answer
  • Test-takers can get unofficial scores after finishing the test
  • Benefits of the GMAT Exam at a GMAT Test Centre in India include a proper testing experience, facilities of Enhanced Score Report, Score Cancellation, and Score Reinstatement.
  • Benefits of the Online GMAT Exam include taking the same test in the comfort of your home. It is particularly beneficial for those who cannot travel to the test centres for different reasons.
  • Students may also cancel or reschedule their GMAT exam if there is a need to do so.

Due to COVID-19, candidates can now take the GMAT exam online at their homes. Read all about the GMAT online exam here

Q:   Is GMAT a computer adaptive test?

A:

GMAT is a computer-adaptive test, it adapts to the performance of the candidate while he is giving the test. The difficulty level of the questions changes based on whether the candidate is answering the questions right or wrong. If the candidate is answering the questions right, the level of the questions will rise, similarly, if the candidate is answering the questions wrong, the candidate will start getting easy questions. Also, as the next question is generated based on the performance in the current question, the candidate cannot visit the previous question. The candidate needs to answer a question about whether he is able to solve it or not in order to move ahead in the exam. If you get an easy question while taking the GMAT exam, you need not panic whether the previous question was correct or incorrect. Instead of wasting your time, you must focus only on solving the current question.
