How to calculate IELTS Band Scores 2024?

IELTS Score Banding: To calculate your IELTS Band Scores you just need to simply take out the mean (average) of all the sections’ scores, namely, Listening Band Score, Reading Band Score, Writing Band Score, and Speaking Band Score. With the IELTS band score calculator, you can get your Reading and Listening score and overall score. That is the sum of all the scores divided by four.

If the average comes out in a decimal point, then it will be rounded off to the nearest half or whole band. For instance, if the average comes out in .25, then it is rounded up to the next half band. So, in this case, if your average score is 6.25, then the final score will be counted as 6.5. In other cases where the average is .75, then it will be rounded off to the next whole band. Therefore, if you get a 6.75 band, the final score will be taken as 7.

Q:   How is the IELTS Writing test marked?

A:

IELTS Writing tests are marked by highly trained and monitored examiners, regardless of where the test is taken. At least two examiners will mark your Writing test, and sometimes up to three or four, to ensure the highest level of accuracy and fairness. Your Writing test response is scored in four areas:

  1. Task response: How well you have fulfilled the task requirements.
  2. Coherence and cohesion: How well your writing is organized and connected.
  3. Lexical resource: How varied and appropriate your vocabulary is.
  4. Grammatical range and accuracy: How well you use grammar and punctuation.

Each criterion is worth 25% of your total mark for that task. The examiner will give you a band score for Writing Task 1 and a band score for Writing Task 2. Then, your final IELTS Writing band score is calculated.

Q:   How is the IELTS Reading test marked?

A:

The IELTS Reading test consists of 40 questions of different types, such as multiple choice, True/False/Not Given, matching, and sentence completion. Your IELTS Reading score is based on how many of the 40 questions you answer correctly. Each correct answer is worth one point. Your total number of correct answers is your "raw score." This raw score is then converted into a band score. It is important to try to answer every question, even if you are not sure of the answer. A blank answer will get you no points. The tables below show the average number of marks required to achieve a particular band score in Academic Reading and General Training Reading.

IELTS Academic Reading

Band Score 515 out of a raw score of 40

Band Score 838 out of a raw score of 40

Q:   How is the IELTS Speaking test marked?

A:

The IELTS Speaking test is a natural conversation between you and a trained examiner. You will sit in a quiet room and talk about a variety of topics, including yourself, your interests, and current events. The examiner will ask you questions to help you demonstrate your speaking skills.

It is important to relax and be yourself during the Speaking test. The examiner is there to help you perform at your best. If you don't understand a question, or if you need more time to think about your answer, just ask. The examiner is happy to help.

Your speaking skills are marked against the following criteria:

  • Fluency and coherence: How well you can speak smoothly and clearly, and how well your ideas are connected.
  • Lexical resource: How varied and appropriate your vocabulary is.
  • Pronunciation: How well you pronounce individual sounds and words.
  • Grammatical range: How well you use different grammatical structures.
  • Accuracy: How few grammar and pronunciation errors you make.

Your Speaking results are given as band scores which range from a band 0 to a band 9. Each whole and half band score corresponds to a level of English-language competence.

Q:   How is the IELTS Listening test marked?

A:

The IELTS Listening test consists of 40 questions, and you get one mark for each correct answer. Your total number of correct answers determines your "raw score, " which is then converted into a band score. It is important to try to answer every question, even if you are not sure of the answer. A blank answer will get you zero marks. The table below shows the average number of marks required to achieve a particular band score in the Listening test:

  • Use a range of vocabulary and grammatical structures: Aim to showcase a variety of vocabulary and sentence structures in your writing. This will enhance your language score and demonstrate your language proficiency.
  • Focus on task response and coherence: Ensure that your writing fully addresses the task prompt and maintains a clear and logical progression of ideas. Pay attention to paragraphing, transitions, and the overall coherence of your essay.
  • Practice time management: Allocate time for planning, writing, and reviewing your essay within the given time limit. Effective time management will help you complete your essay and allow time for revising and editing.
  • Seek feedback: If possible, have a teacher, tutor, or native English speaker review your writing and provide feedback. They can identify areas for improvement and offer suggestions to enhance your writing skills.
  • Familiarize yourself with the scoring criteria: Understand the IELTS Writing band descriptors and scoring criteria. This will give you insight into what examiners are looking for and help you focus on the key elements to achieve a higher score.

Remember, consistent practice and continuous improvement are key to achieving a good score in the IELTS Writing section.

What would happen if you fail the IELTS exam?

There is no pass or fail in the IELTS exam and candidates can retake the exam as many times as they want. However, every time you need to pay the registration fee if you wish to attempt the exam again.

Q:   Is the IELTS result based on luck?

A:

No, the IELTS result is not purely based on luck. The IELTS exam is designed to assess your English language proficiency based on standardized criteria and evaluation processes. The scoring is determined by trained and qualified examiners who follow specific marking guidelines. Your IELTS result is a reflection of your language skills and how well you perform on the test day. It is influenced by various factors such as your preparation, understanding of the test format, familiarity with the question types, time management, and ability to effectively communicate in English.

While there can be some variation in individual performance on a given day, the IELTS exam is designed to provide a fair and reliable assessment of your language abilities. By preparing well, practising, and familiarizing yourself with the test format and requirements, you can maximize your chances of achieving the desired score. It's important to note that the IELTS result is not solely dependent on luck but rather on your language skills and preparation efforts.

Hello Tajkia. I would highly recommend that you opt for books/ study material that is available on the official website of IDP - the conducting body of the IELTS exam. The books would have the latest syllabus and cover everything you would need to know to ace your IELTS exam.
