In 2026, TOEFL scores are usually released within 3 to 6 days after the test date. Candidates can check their TOEFL results online through their ETS account. The score report shows section-wise marks and the overall TOEFL score, which can be downloaded and sent to universities.

When can I view my TOEFL scores?

Candidates should note that TOEFL unofficial scores of the Reading and Listening sections are available to the candidates immediately after completing the test. However, the official TOEFL scores or TOEFL results are available to candidates approximately 3 days after taking the test.

What are TOEFL Unofficial Scores?

Upon completion of your TOEFL test, test takers can view their TOEFL unofficial scores for the Reading and Listening sections of the TOEFL exam, and also see the date they can expect to receive their official scores in their ETS account. Official TOEFL iBT scores are available as early as 3 days after the test. The TOEFL unofficial score accuracy is 100% accurate to the official scores (maximum of the time).

TOEFL results will be available 4-8 days after your test date. The exact TOEFL result date is not announced by ETS, as it will vary depending on the basis of the test date. TOEFL iBT scores are released quickly through your official ETS account. As of 2026 updates, official scores are typically available 3 days (72 hours) after your test date for both the TOEFL test centre and Home Edition formats.

Step-by-Step Guide to Check Your TOEFL Scores

1. Wait for Notification: ETS sends an email when your scores are ready. At the end of your test, you'll also see the exact date your official scores will be available in your account.
2. Log in to Your ETS Account: Visit the official TOEFL/ETS website, or directly to the score portal (often linked as "My TOEFL Home" or "Sign In"). Use the same username (email) and password you created during registration.
3. View Your Scores: Once logged in:
   • Look for the "View Scores" or "Past Tests" / "My Scores" section (usually on the dashboard or under "Scores").
   • Select the relevant test date. Your full official scores will appear, including:
     • Section scores (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing)
     • Total score
     • MyBest® scores (highest section scores from tests in the last 2 years)
4. Download the PDF Score Report: PDF versions become available usually 1 day (24-48 hours) after electronic scores appear.
   • In the scores section, find and click "Print/Download PDF" or "Download Score Report."
   • Save or print it for your records (this unofficial-looking PDF is your official personal copy).

ETS updated the TOEFL iBT scoring system to a more intuitive 1–6 band scale (in half-point increments, e.g., 4.0, 4.5, 5.0), aligned closely with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This replaces the previous 0–120 scale.

Each of the four sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing) receives its own score on the 1–6 scale. Your overall score is the average of these four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band.

How Each Section is Scored

• Reading and Listening (Multiple-choice sections): Your raw score (number of correct answers, adjusted for question difficulty and possible multi-point items) is converted to a scaled band score on the 1–6 scale using ETS's equating process. This accounts for slight variations in test difficulty across different exam versions.
• Speaking and Writing (Performance-based sections): These are evaluated by a combination of certified human raters and AI scoring technology for consistency and fairness.
  • Speaking: Responses to 4 tasks are rated on delivery, language use, and topic development (rubrics range from 0–4 per task, then scaled to 1–6).
  • Writing: The Integrated task and Writing for an Academic Discussion are scored on content accuracy, organization, grammar, vocabulary, and development (rubrics typically 0–5 per task, then scaled). Centralized scoring (never at the test center) ensures unbiased results.

Overall Score Calculation

1. Take the four section scores (each 1.0 to 6.0 in 0.5 increments).
2. Compute the average (sum of section scores divided by 4).
3. Round to the nearest half band:
   • If the average ends in .00–.24, round down to the nearest whole or half (e.g., 5.125 will become 5.0).
   • If .25.74,  round to the nearest half (e.g., 5.25 will become 5.5).
   • If .75+, round up (e.g., 5.375 will become 5.5).

Examples:

• Section scores: 5.0, 5.0, 5.0, 5.0 will Average = 5.0 is Overall: 5.0
• Section scores: 5.5, 5.0, 5.0, 5.0 will Average = 5.125 is Overall: 5.0 (rounded down)
• Section scores: 5.5, 5.5, 5.0, 5.0 will Average = 5.25 is Overall: 5.5 (rounded up)

The TOEFL iBT changed its scoring from the old 0–120 points to a new 1.0 to 6.0 Band Scale. Instead of adding points together (30+30+30+30), each section is now graded on its own 6-point scale. Your final result is the average of all four sections. Every part of the test uses the same scale in 0.5 increments (for example: 4.0, 4.5, 5.0).

Official score reports will be sent to the selected recipients approximately 11 days after your test date. TOEFL iBT scores (including both the previous 0–120 scale and the new 1–6 band scale) are valid for 2 years from your official test date. This is the standard policy set by ETS, the organization that administers the TOEFL exam.

• Validity Period: Exactly 2 years after the date you took the test. Scores expire on the same calendar date two years later (not rounded to the end of the month or year).
