Universities that use English as their primary medium of teaching and training require standardised English test scores to compare applications received from students across the globe. Conducted by the Pearson PLC Group, the PTE exam is one of the most trusted English exams among international students looking to study abroad. This exam is also accepted for visa applications to several countries like the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
The PTE exam's full form is the Pearson Test of English. There are three types of PTE tests, namely PTE Academic, PTE Core and PTE UK Visa Tests. This exam page is dedicated to providing detailed information on the PTE Academic Exam, that is taken by students for studying abroad.
One of the shortest English tests known, the PTE test can be taken in a single sitting of 2 hours on the candidate's preferred date and time at a nearby PTE test centre. The PTE Academic test is accepted by over 3,500+ universities and colleges globally, and students can simply register for the test by logging into the "My PTE" portal. The average time required to book a PTE exam slot is 15-30 minutes.
Important Update: The PTE exam fee for Indian students was increased by INR 1,000 in March 2025. Thus, the current PTE exam fee is INR 18,000 (inclusive of all taxes).

The PTE exam, which stands for Pearson Test of English, is a computer-based English language proficiency test. It is primarily used for:
- Academic purposes: Many universities and colleges accept PTE scores for the admissions of non native English speaking international students.
- Immigration: Some countries use PTE scores as part of their visa application process.
- Professional certification: Certain professional organizations recognize PTE scores for certification or registration purposes.
The test assesses the test-taker's abilities in four main language skills:
- Speaking
- Writing
- Reading
- Listening
PTE is known for its quick results (typically available within 2 days of taking the test) and its use of AI scoring to ensure consistency. The PTE test is accepted in many English-speaking countries, including the UK, Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada.
Yes, PTE may seem harder to some students who have taken the IELTS exam earlier. This is because the PTE exam is concluded in a single sitting of 2 hours. However, the IELTS exam takes place in two different sittings within a span of a week. This gives students more time to prepare for the speaking part of the IELTS test.
One other difficulty that the student may come around is that the test is completely automated and student may not find any human examiner for any part of the test. This might intimidate the students who are not comfortable with taking the test on a computer.
The PTE Academic exam doesn't have a single "passing score" and the scores range from 10 (the lowest) to 90 (the highest). However, most universities abroad require you to have a CEFR B2 level of profeciency in the English language to pursue most of their programs.
The PTE scores equivalent to the CEFR B2 level range from 59-75. Hence, any PTE score within this range will qualify you to get admitted to most universities and courses abroad.
The current fee in India is INR 18,000, inclusive of 18% taxes. This covers your test and score reporting. Sending digital scorecards to universities is free. Test takers can send their PTE test scores to as many universities as they like without having to pay any extra charges - a facility that is not currently available in any of the other English language proficiency exams.
As per students who have taken the PTE exam, the Summarize Spoken Text, Write from Dictation, Highlight Incorrect Words, Re-order Paragraphs, Reading Fill in the Blanks, Repeat Sentence, and Essay Writing are frequently cited as challenging due to their integrated skills testing and time constraints. However, individual strengths and weaknesses determine which task is perceived as the most difficult.
If you are unable to attend your scheduled PTE exam because of an unforeseen circumstance, it is advisable to cancel it at your the earliest convenience. The PTE exam cancellation fee varies based on the number of days left for your PTE exam. The costs of cancelling your PTE exam slot, based on the days left for your exam are given below.

Commonly asked questions
Both the PTE Academic and IELTS have been designed to understand the English language proficiency of the candidate. They have been designed to test the writing, speaking reading, and listening skills of the test taker. Hence, both the tests are at par with each other and the candidate should opt for the one he is comfortable in. However, there are some points of differences that must be noted when making a decision, these are:
- The PTE exam (2 hours) is shorter than the IELTS exam (3 hours).
- All the segments (sections) of a PTE exam are tested within a day, in a single sitting. However, the different sections in an IELTS exam are assessed on different days.
- The IELTS exam tests speaking, listening, reading and writing proficiencies in the English language separately, which may not be appropriate for testing the real-life comprehension abilities of the test-taker. On the other side, the PTE exam tests all these skills simultaneously based on the belief that successful communication is developed by combining all these skills together.
- Your performance in a PTE exam is judged by AI, which leaves little to no room for human errors and any sort of bias. the scores awarded in this manner are mostly accurate. While, in an IELTS exam, a human examiner is present to test your overall English proficiency.
- Results can be expected within two days of taking the PTE exam, while the IELTS exam results are released later.
The PTE test scores are typically released within 48 hours (2 days) of taking the exam. However, in some specific cases, it may even take up to 5 days.
You can book your PTE exam slot easily by clicking on the "Book Now" button under the PTE Academic Exam Section on the official website. Following this, enter "India or your preferred city" in the search bar to look for the PTE slots availability.
From the list, choose your preferred PTE exam centre, date and time slot. Choose your preferred slot and click on "book" to secure your PTE exam slot on your preferred date. Pay the PTE exam fees (INR 18,000 for Indian students) and save your unique registration number for future reference. Make sure to read the ID card policy and the cancellation policy before taking your PTE exam on the exam day.
A single PTE exam can be rescheduled as many as 6 times. After a single PTE exam has been rescheduled 6 times, the option of recheduling the exam will itself disappear from the test taker's dashboard.
To reschedule the PTE test, the test takers need to visit their My PTE account at least 14 days before appearing for the test and click on the "reschedule" button appearing below their PTE exam slot. Candidates will not be charged any rescheduling fee if they choose to reschedule their PTE exam successfully 14 days before the day of exam.
Note that if you fail to apply for rescheduling of your PTE test at least 14 days ahead of your exam, you will have no option of rescheduling the test. In that case, candidates will have to "cancel" their PTE test and rebook it.
A candidate can take the PTE exam 12 times within a period of 12 months. An extra number of attempt(s) can be granted only if your reason for requesting an extended number of attempts aligns with the Pearson PTE test's retake policy. However, candidates cannot sit for another PTE exam until the following conditions are met -
- They have received the results of their last PTE exam. Until you receive the result of your last PTE test, you will not be able to register for a new one on the official PTE website.
- They have not already booked another PTE exam date. If you have booked a PTE test date, you will not be able to book another one. This is done to ensure that all the PTE test seats are taken by test takers at all times.
One can book another PTE test at the next convenient date after they have received the results of the previous test. In the light of above points, candidates can take their next PTE exam within a gap of 4-5 days, and this is the only criteria set by the board. Therefore, candidates can take the PTE Academic exam as many times as they want, with each attempt separated by a minimum of 5 days. They only need to wait to receive their scores before they can book their next test. Candidates should note that PTE Test Scores are made available to test takers within 2 days.
There are no specific eligibility criteria based on nationality, background, or education level for the PTE exam. Anyone aiming to demonstrate their English proficiency for studying abroad, immigration, or professional purposes can take the PTE test. However, individual universities or visa applications may have their own score requirements.
To study in the UK, the minimum CEFR level required for acquiring a General Study Visa (formerly the Tier 4 visa) is B1; which is equivalent to a PTE score 43 or higher in each section. However, some universities require a higher level of profeciency, i.e. CEFR B2 level which corresponds to a PTE score of 59 or higher in each section of the exam.
