Strong Academics and Flexibilities with Room for More Student Engagement
Tips: Before coming to FH Dortmund, be ready for a high degree of academic independence. The practical, applied teaching style here is great, but professors expect you to manage your own study schedule without hand-holding. Moving to Dortmund brings a real adjustment period—from getting used to a quieter, more private lifestyle to wrestling with slow, paper-heavy German bureaucracy like the Bürgeramt for your residence permit.
While English gets you through your degree, basic German is essential for daily life in the Ruhr region and for finding local jobs. Look into scholarships like the Deutschlandstipendium or DAAD early, even if you don't apply right away. Overall, it's a solid experience, but you need to come prepared to handle things on your own from week one.
Likes (Value for money): Value for money gets an easy 5/5 because tuition at FH Dortmund is completely free. You only pay the mandatory semester fee—currently around €347—and that includes the nationwide Deutschlandsemesterticket. Being able to ride regional trains and public transit anywhere in Germany for that price alone makes it worth every cent. Combine that with solid, hands-on professors and great lab resources, and the educational value you get for a couple hundred euros is unbeatable.
Dislikes (Student Life): Student life gets a 3/5 because FH Dortmund is great for studying, but pretty quiet socially. The libraries, Wi-Fi, and study spots at both Sonnenstraße and campus Emil-Figuer-Straße are solid. But actual social events only really happen during Freshers' Week (Orientierungswoche) at the start of the semester, after which campus completely dies down. A lot of people commute in for lectures and head straight home. Plus, most student clubs and AStA activities are run entirely in German, so finding an English-speaking community or club on campus is tough.
