A quiet town with quality technical education.
Tips: Students should know that Schmalkalden is a small and quiet town which is very different from big cities. The environment is peaceful and good for studying but entertainment and nightlife options are limited. The university has a good practical learning approach and modern labs, especially for engineering programs. However, students should be prepared to learn some German because it is very helpful for daily life and part-time jobs. It is also important to plan accommodation early because student dormitories fill up quickly. It is a good university for students who want a focused academic environment. The transition was a bit challenging at first because of the language barrier and cultural differences. In Germany, people are very punctual and organized and everything runs according to rules and schedules. Initially it took some time to adapt to the weather, food habits and the quieter lifestyle of a small town. However the university has a supportive international environment, and interacting with students from different countries helped me adjust. Over time, I became more comfortable with the culture and daily routine here. At the moment, I have not received any scholarship. Most students here usually support themselves through part-time jobs along with their studies. However there are opportunities such as the Deutschlandstipendium and other university or external scholarships that students can apply for based on academic performance or achievements.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Food options from my home country (India) are somewhat limited in Schmalkalden. Since it is a small student town, there are not many authentic Indian restaurants nearby. Most of the available options are small fast-food places such as doner kebab shops, pizza places, bakeries, and a few Asian restaurants. If someone wants proper Indian food, they usually have to travel to bigger cities like Erfurt or Frankfurt, where more Indian restaurants are available. Prices in local restaurants are generally around 5-10 for fast food and 10-20 for full meals. Because of this, many international students prefer cooking at home. Indian grocery items can be ordered online or bought from international stores in nearby cities. Personally, I mostly cook my own meals and eat outside occasionally.

Affordable quality education in a peaceful student friendly town.
Tips: Before joining Hochschule Schmalkalden, students should know that it is located in a small and peaceful town, which makes the cost of living affordable and the environment very safe, but it also means there are fewer part-time job opportunities and less nightlife compared to bigger German cities. My transition after arriving was mostly smooth, although I experienced a cultural shift, especially with punctuality, independent study methods, and the importance of basic German language skills in daily life. Over time, it became easier to adapt because the university has a friendly international environment. I did not receive a specific scholarship; however, studying in Germany itself is financially manageable because public universities charge very low tuition fees and mainly a semester contribution.
Likes (Part time work): The programme at Hochschule Schmalkalden offers high-quality education with very low tuition fees compared to many other countries. Students mainly pay only a semester contribution, which includes administrative services and student benefits, while receiving strong academic support, modern laboratories, and practical industry-oriented learning. Additionally, Germany provides good career opportunities and the possibility of part-time work during studies, making the overall return on investment very favourable for international students.
Dislikes (Internships): Before joining Hochschule Schmalkalden, students should know that it is located in a small and quiet town, which is very safe and affordable but has fewer entertainment options and part-time job opportunities compared to larger German cities. After coming here, the transition was generally smooth, although there was a cultural shift, especially in terms of punctuality, independent study style, and the German language used in daily life. However, the university provides good academic support and an international environment, which helps students adapt gradually. I did not receive a specific scholarship, but studying in Germany itself is financially beneficial because public universities charge very low tuition feels and only a semester contribution.

It is good and peaceful to live here, and the neighbours are also very supportive and helpful.
Tips: They are welcoming international students and giving them the support they need. It is so good to live here. Through expatrio, I am spending my monthly expenses. I am so satisfied with my course and university. I am learning more here and the exams are also good.
Likes (Permanent Immigration): The cost of living is less and we can lead a peaceful life here. I will permanently immigrate here as life here is healthy and easy. There is 80% chance for me to settle here. People's interaction is very low and they don't like to socialise much either.
Dislikes (Part time work): It is tough to get a part time job here as the opportunities are less compared to the students' population. Managing both studies and part time job is easy and the average payout is 14 euros. To easily get the part time job you must need German B1 level.

The University is stress-free and focused on student well-being.
Tips: It's a quiet town but very beautiful and peaceful. Perfect environment for students and studies. Everything is nearby, like the supermarket, Apotheke, Library, and Park. If you explore the town enough you'll find it quite charming. You will make lots of international friendships.

A supportive and career focused experience.
Tips: You will feel a complete shift if you come from Asian countries, say India. As you know it is a European country, culture difference is too different. If you are coming to Germany do learn to speak at least up to the B1 level of German. I did not get any scholarships but the allowance given is pretty good, somewhere around 1000. The course is very good, the only drawback is that the university is located in a remote place. If you are a hiking or sports person then this is a great place, the country is quite good.
Likes (Quality of faculty): The teachers are very friendly and we can ask any questions at any given time. Every lecture is about 1.5 hours and they guide us in a very good way but most of the studies should be done by us. Almost everyone is German, but they speak very good English.
Dislikes (Indian Food): I am from India and to find an Indian restaurant I have to travel at least 1.5 hours to Eisenach or Erfurt. But apart from that there are pretty good options here. I prefer cooking at home, but sometimes like 2-3 times a month I eat in a restaurant.

A good combination of studies and life.
Tips: After coming here, everything was so different and nice at first, but then the language became a barrier that will affect your daily life. Scholarships are available and you need to study very hard to get those. But the experience was great and amazing for me.
Likes (Student Life): There are many parties and extracurricular activities always going on, and the students are very friendly. People from diverse backgrounds and countries, you'll have the opportunity to experience multicultural activities and make friends from various backgrounds.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): The faculty is very knowledgeable and employs an amazing teaching style. You will enjoy your time here, with great opportunities and work options available. You can be lucky enough to secure a working student job, collaborating with professors on a daily basis on the next big thing.
