Master of Science in Computational Materials Science - Batch of 2026
4.1
Best university, less expensive.
Tips: The University is good and is located in Eastern Germany, the German language requirement is more important. Since Freiberg is a small city, your expenses will be lower compared to major cities. There are options to avail of a scholarship, one can opt for it if their academic score is good.
Dislikes (Indian Food): As the college is located in a small town, there is not much choice when it comes to eating Indian food. The only thing one can do is make it. However, there is no Indian store in the town but one can always order on the Internet, and it takes 4-5 days to arrive.

Technical university of Freiberg - my opinion
Tips: Select the course according to the field of interest. Analyse and go through the course modules. Don't join just for international exposure. A strong interest in the field makes course understanding and easier to grasp the concepts. German language to a basic level is necessary.
Likes (Public transportation): Availability of buses and trains on time. Bicycle is one of the important transportation in Freiberg, as the city is small and beautiful. For transportation, monthly tickets are available to access all the city buses. So, one monthly purchase for those who use it regularly.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Not enough Indian stores. Since it is a developing area, people have to go to nearby cities (half an hour of travel to find specific Indian groceries. Normally a few are available. I prefer cooking myself with the available options, which are already in Freiberg.

3.0
A small, academically oriented university
Tips: University arranges a buddy program for each of the new international students joining the university. The facility is provided at no cost at all and in fact, helps to receive personal guidance from somebody who is aware of the surroundings and helps you to take the initial steps once you arrive in Germany.
Likes (Safety): Freiberg being a small university town there is a good balance between foreign nationals and the native Germans as inhabitants. The city as a whole is quite safe place to be and people here are also very approachable and guide each other if the need be.
Dislikes (Part time work): Freiberg is a small town as a result the places outside of the university where one can find part-time work is also limited. People often go to nearby bigger cities for example Dresden or Chemnitz for part-time jobs. In Freiberg, since the opportunity is less, German language proficiency improves the chances considerably.

Stress free place, but course dependent, kmow your course well before you arrive
Tips: Students must be aware of the curriculum of the selected course. What you will get from the university is different from what your course will give you, so always talk to your seniors and be aware of the faculty, curriculum, and available jobs. It is always important to start by getting to know each faculty member as well.
Likes (Safety): Germany itself is the safest place. I have never experienced anything unsafe on campus or outside the campus. We have reached Freiberg late multiple times after travelling, maybe from our home country or from different regions, but have never experienced unsafeness here.
Dislikes (Internships): Finding an internship is student-dependent and not something that the university will provide. Whatever internship a student will search its their responsibility to find in their relevant field of study. Some of the courses also provide a mandatory internship certification, and that makes it easy to get internships quickly.

University is highly ranked for material and geoscience programs.
Tips: Our university is good overall, student-friendly, and not too expensive to study. Courses are well organised and focus on application-based learning rather than just theoretical knowledge. Good for students aiming to pursue advanced degrees in STEM. Scholarships are available, they can be applied for as published in university emails.

A transition of a lifetime.
Tips: You need to learn German, which would also help in other parts of your professional career and in finding jobs. You need to be self-organised and very structured, and also independent-minded in almost all aspects of life. Time management has to be top-notch. True for all students coming to Germany. No scholarships available. Usually, there is one you get by applying at the university; a lot of people get it. Requires a bit more extra-curricular participation than just studying. I am very happy with the education I got, the course structure, and I love it here in Germany in most cases.
Likes (Safety): Freiberg is one of the safest places in general. I have never faced any discrimination or bad behaviour in general. Although now and then you will find cranky older people. But they do not bother you if you do not come directly across them.
Dislikes (Indian Food): I always preferred cooking myself. However, eating out at an Indian restaurant in Germany is not recommended. There are other cuisines too, and they are not too costly. Usually, as a student, pizza is what we ordered, and there are some great Pizzerias here.
