Things to know about NUS(Singapore)
Tips: NUS is highly competitive, and students from different backgrounds come to study there. The course materials are heavy, and students should pay close attention to pass. Some subjects are very tough, with assignments based on real-life experiences. I signed the Service Obligation Scheme, which reduces the fee for international students if they sign an agreement to work in Singapore for 3 years. The satisfaction was very good for university and course but I was disappointed with not being able to get PR in Singapore even after studying Masters.
Likes (Quality of faculty): The faculty is one of the best in the world, with ties to world-class researchers and multinational companies. The course material provided was relevant to research and industry. Most modules were a combination of assignments and final exams. I took 10 modules, and all of them were open-book exams. Open-book exams are some of the toughest in the world. The faculty are mostly from Singapore (Ethnicity: Chinese).
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): Singapore has a very strict permanent residency policy. It’s almost impossible to get PR as an Indian after the riots in 2013. Moreover, people complain about a stressful life in Singapore with long working hours. One big advantage is that Singapore is very close to India, so it’s easy to visit in a couple of hours. If I were given a chance to permanently immigrate there, I would only consider it with a 50% chance.

Master of Laws (LLM) - Batch of 2026

NUS - totally worth an experience.
Tips: It is always overwhelming to leave your home country and start fresh somewhere else. However, Singapore is designed in a way that it is very easy to settle there and navigate it. There was a cultural shift. People there typically tend to be more isolated and private. -Yes, I did receive a scholarship from NUS. I got a 100% waiver on my tuition fees. This scholarship is given to very few students (2-3 people). One needs to apply for this scholarship in their NUS application.
Likes (Public transportation): -The public transportation facilities in Singapore are impeccable. It is very well connected. It is very easy to navigate the city. Additional, NUS has internal shuttle within the campus which comes in regular intervals. The campus is a bit far from the main city, but it is very well connected by MRT, buses, and internal shuttle. -The available modes of public transportation are M.RT and buses there. -It is very affordable and convenient overall in comparison to taking cabs. The charges for M.A. vary between $ 1 and $ 6 depending on the distance one intends to cover.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): Bagging a job in Singapore in the legal field is not easy, but not impossible. Companies typically prefer to hire locally. Very few companies are open to sponsoring visas for work, and this also depends on each company's quota for hiring foreigners. Since a lot of Indians apply for a job there, it makes the market more difficult to tap into as an Indian. The salary packages depend on your years of work experience and the role that you are willing to take. As far as I understand, for in-house legal roles with people having at least 3-5 years of post-work experience in India, the salary can range from $6k to $8K. Typically, people start with paralegal roles in law firms there, which fall within the lower bracket of the salary range.

Tips: No, it is definitely not fun at all as people are really hard to reach. The whole course structure has been designed in such a way that it would filter out the top 0.1% of the lot instead of preparing the students for a career. The course material does not match with the examination papers, there is nothing provided to practice on.
Likes (Public transportation): Free transport on campus Bus frequency every 10 minutes, 30 minutes on weekends Campus well connected with city, metro station on campus Bus station on campus public transport is roughly 2-5 sgd for an entire trip Taxi are expensive but extremely quick 15 min travel time on road .
Dislikes (Indian Food): Vegetarian food is a major issue, only subways is available Cooking isn't allowed in certain residence Food is mostly land Off campus restaurants are expensive, 30-300 sgd On campus food is affordable, but dinner shuts down most places by 6:30 Across the country places shutdown 6:30 - 9:30.

NUS was the perfect choice for a balance between safety abroad and quality education
Tips: I'm someone who has stayed in Singapore for a fair chunk of time before I returned here for my masters so there wasn't much transition for me. I think vegetarian food is a bit difficult to get, but indian food and groceries are easily available. Overall, the course was okay, I chose a research project that fit well with my interests, which made my degree worth it.
Likes (Public transportation): Honestly, Singapore is just incredible when it comes to getting around. The buses and trains are literally everywhere, and the signs are so clear you can't really get lost. Since the uni is right in the city, getting there is a breeze. They even have campus buses that make it super easy to hop between buildings or just get to and from the nearest MRT station without having to walk too far in the heat.
Dislikes (Quality of faculty): I am more interested in computational Biology and I feel like a major limitation of my degree was that there weren't enough people who were qualified to teach dry-lab subjects. As a result, the course was skewed overall to cover more wet lab subjects.

Pretty diverse and welcoming campus.
Tips: Singapore is the best country for safety, and the campus is pretty good. Buses are running all the time, and it's safe to roam around and go around campus. Also, if you are living on the campus vs living outside, you get different privileges, so seek out early if you want to live on campus. NUS is a great university, and I did get scholarships from the MoE.
Dislikes (Part time work): Finding part-time work isn't easy in Singapore due to immigration status. Even internships are a little. Tough unless you are in the MEng, where you need to work with companies to work on your project. In general, the many options for internships are very limited.
