The University of Dayton was established in 1850 by Mary Society. In the history of 170 years, the university. Initially, it was established as St. Mary Schools enrolling 14 primary students from Dayton. In 1861, college preparatory classes were started. In 1882, the college started awarding Collegiate degrees. During the war, the college gave shelter to the victims. The college also started Military training in the wake of the World Wars. The college was renamed to its present day name in 1920.
