History

The Massachusetts Legislature established the UMass Boston in 1964. However, the university opened its doors in 1965 at a renovated building in Park Square Downtown. In the year 1974, the university moved to its present campus on Columbia Point in Dorchester. In 1982, Boston State College was incorporated into the University of Massachusetts Boston, eliminating duplicate programs.

The influx of many students from Boston, plus a rise in the new applications, boosted UG enrollment by 38% and the college’s graduate programs tripled the university’s graduate enrollment. This, in turn, gave the university the momentum to add more graduate degree offerings, including doctoral programs, throughout the 1980s and 1990s. By the year 1995, UMass Boston had 31 Graduate and Certificate programs. In 2004, the UMass Boston Campus Center opened, which created new spaces for the offices and student activities, and a spectacular harborfront presence for the civic events.
