The school founded in 1946, in aftermath of World War II, was created with aim of educating students to serve, lead, produce & share knowledge of critical public policy challenges facing the global community.
University's founders laid a major emphasis on proper understanding of geographic regions of importance & to create indviduals who could pave the way to embark on a post war world. By 1967, it had expanded its network to 8 regional institutes, before shifting base to Columbia University's east campus in 1971. It was renamed to School of International & Public Affairs in 1981.
