Not a place to find a job
Tips: Before moving to Hull, you really need to do a deep dive on your course modules, accommodation options, and realistic living expenses so you aren't caught off guard. While Hull is easily one of the most affordable student cities in the UK compared to down south, budgeting properly is still key. There are scholarships available through the university, but don't count on them as guaranteed funding—make sure you check the exact eligibility requirements well in advance.
On a personal level, the biggest culture shock coming from India was definitely the drinking culture. Pubs and nights out around Newland Avenue or the student union are a massive part of social life here, but nobody pressures you, and you're totally free to do your own thing. Overall, I’ve genuinely loved my time at Hull—the locals and fellow students in Yorkshire are super friendly and welcoming, and the course itself has been great. The only real downside has been the post-study job market.
Likes (Safety): I rated safety 5 because I have always felt safe both on and around campus. The university provides campus security, well-lit pathways, emergency support, and student services that help students whenever needed. In the city, I have generally had a positive experience. Occasionally, you may come across some naughty school kids, but they have never caused any serious issues for me. Overall, I believe it is a safe and comfortable place for international students to live and study. Also most importantly, be safe with your bicycle; you blink, and it's gone.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): I gave Post-Study Jobs a 2/5 because landing a sponsored role in the UK right now is an uphill battle, regardless of how many applications you submit. Out of roughly 600 people in my cohort, I only know of about five who actually secured a job that comes with visa sponsorship. Most employers simply don't have sponsorship licenses, or they aren't willing to hit the newer, higher salary thresholds required for a Skilled Worker visa.
While the Graduate Visa gives you two years to work after finishing at Hull, finding a company that will transition you to full sponsorship afterward is tough. Most entry-level graduate schemes around Yorkshire or the rest of the UK offer average starting pay, but they explicitly state 'no visa sponsorship' on the job posting. You can send out hundreds of CVs and go through endless interview stages, but the lack of sponsoring employers makes the post-study job hunt genuinely exhausting.
