MSc in Computer Science - Batch of 2024

A Great place to learn and grow personally and academically
Tips: Fast-paced, heavily independent learning environment. Most modules require self-study, research, and effective time management. My one piece of advice would be don't wait for anything; start everything from day 1. The biggest adjustment was becoming more independent in both academics and daily life. The teaching style is less exam-focused and more research- and discussion-based. Adapting to weather took a little time. Yes, I received an ECS scholarship from the university. I had to fill out a separate application for that. For computer science there aren't many scholarship schemes. Well, it was a strong academic experience with great opportunities for learning. I regret not making the most of career services, networking events, and student societies from the beginning. If you want part-time jobs at the university, make sure you apply for them on Day 1. ALSO, the university supports business ideas (whatever they may be) and gives lots of funding for them, so make use of that.
Likes (Quality of faculty): I gave Faculty a top rating because as a Russell Group university, Southampton professors are genuinely working at the cutting edge of their fields, and that research feeds directly into our lectures. You're being taught by academics who are actually writing the papers and leading industry projects, yet they’re still completely approachable during office hours if you need help dissecting a complex topic. The teaching goes way beyond just memorizing lecture slides. Most of our modules were built around real-world application—things like working through actual case studies, writing research papers, leading group debates, and doing practical lab work. Professors here really push you to challenge assumptions and think critically, which makes the coursework feel genuinely relevant instead of just academic theory.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): It's very long and heavily dependent on securing employers' sponsorship after the graduate visa. The process can be uncertain due to changing immigration policies. While I enjoyed studying and working, I don't see myself staying there permanently. It largely depends on finding long-term employers willing to sponsor a skilled worker visa and meeting the residence requirements.

Education has been made friendly and simpler.
Tips: The college is very academically oriented and has a lot of student friendly activities. The syllabus is industry oriented and gives rise to a lot of critical thinking improvement. Scholarships are available and are awarded on the basis of merit. There are many clubs for students.

A technically strong house university.
Tips: UoS is a vibrant college and academically very focused. They have a good level of resources for students and researchers. The environment is very calm and friendly and you will actually feel like studying in college. The professors come from diverse backgrounds and provide top class knowledge and experience.
Likes (Post study jobs): Most of the graduates end up having a full time job within 6 months of their job search even in a slow job market. If you are young and fresh out of college, UOS is a great choice. It will help nurture and prepare for the UK market and even let you do your own business ahead.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): Given the constant change of UK rules, settlement in 2026 is far tougher than in 2020. The real challenge is sponsorship for work after studies which is currently not favoured by the government. Most students opt for a PSW and extends for 2 years but it works if you are young.

A supportive, diverse and enriching university experience.
Tips: The students should know that the university is very supportive with plenty of resources to help them settled in. Transitioning here was smooth, though I did experience a bit of cultural adjustment, especially adapting to the diverse and independent learning style. I did not avail any scholarships, so I relied on personal funding. Overall, I am very satisfied with the university, the course structure, and the experience of studying and living in the UK.
Likes (Indian Food): The campus is vibrant friendly and full of opportunities to meet people. My days usually involved lectures, project work, spending time with friends and a bit of sports. I enjoyed the strong sense of community the most. The university frequently hosts events like tech talks cultural nights fairs and I used to join them whenever I could. There are also plenty of student clubs from the tech and cultural groups to sports and hobby clubs. It was easy to get involved.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): The lecturers are highly knowledgeable passionate about their subjects and bring real industry and research insights into their teaching. They are very accessible and approachable always willing to offer support during office hours.

A wonderful place to grow academically.
Tips: Meet with potential students for that academic year and get together as a group so that they can plan things. Little things like accommodation planning, trip planning and project discussions go a long way as they constantly remind you that you're not alone.
