Minnesota State University Mankato History
In 1868, MSU, then known as the Mankato Normal School, became only the second teacher training institution of Minnesota, welcoming its first cohort of around 27 students, who all received free education, in exchange for teaching in the state for a minumum of two years after graduating. The institute continued to expand over the rest of the 19th century, changing its name to Mankato State Teachers College, in 1921.
1927 saw MSU offer its first four year-degree: a Bachelor of Education. In 1957, it was again renamed, this time as Mankato State College after the establishment of its Highland campus started.
The institute achieved full university status, in 1975, and for the fifth time in its history, got renamed to its current name in 1998.
Today, it stands as one of the best universities in Minnesota, offering over 130 UG, 85 PG, advanced certificate and doctoral courses, housing over 200 students clubs and more than 20 intercollegiate athletic teams.
