About The University of Rhode Island
History
Founded in 1892, the University of Rhode Island (URI) is a public higher education institution based in South Kingstown, Rhode Island.
The university was founded with the idea laid out by Senator Justin S. Morrill of Vermont of funding the development of higher educational institution by the sale of public lands.
The Morrill’s Land Act was passed by Abraham Lincoln in 1862 which gave each state’s senator & Congress representative about thirty thousand acres of land which were to be sold, & the proceeds were to be invested for the development of at-least one college or university in every state.
About 30 years later, the university of Rhode Island was found.

URI is among an exclusive group of institutions to be accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). The institute’s most recent review was conducted in 2022 & is valid for a period of 5 years.
