History
UWF opened its doors in 1967. The University gained the official emblem after the Chambered Nautilus, which President Crosby selected as the University of West Florida’s official emblem. By 1966, the university had three complete buildings standing and opened its first upper-division school in 1967. In 1969, the university also launched the first master’s programs in English, Elementary Education, and History in September.
The University of West Florida’s athletic department earned its membership in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics around 1970-79. To make the public more informed the University of West Florida launched its very first Radio Station known as the WUWF Public Radio in 1981 to keep the public more informed and aware of events, ideas, and cultures. Over the years, the University of West Florida continued to grow and expand by introducing more programs in the university and also securing achievements in athletics.In 2024, the University of West Florida became one of the first three universities in the Florida State University System to earn the designation of Florida Collegiate Purple Star Campus for supporting military students and their families.
