Q:   Does the University of Helsinki offer full scholarships for international students?
A: 

The University of Helsinki offers generous scholarship for all their international students. These scholarships are awarded for two years and cover wither 50% or 100% tuition fees of fee paying overseas candidates. For all scholarships, students are required to study full time to fulfil the requirements of the scholarship. After the first study year, the progress of the student's studies will be checked and depending on their progress, the scholarship will be continued.

As part of the national Finland Scholarship program, University of Helsinki awards Finland Scholarships. Students may apply for this scholarship when applying for our international master’s degree programmes. Finland scholarships covers 100% tuition fee and also includes a 5000 € relocation grant. The scholarship and the 5000 EUR will be renewed for the second year of the student's studies in case they complete at least 55 credits during their first study year. University of Helsinki may award up to one Finland scholarship for a newly admitted student of each master’s degree program.

University of Helsinki has an extensive portfolio of programs across bachelor's, master's as well as doctorate levels through its faculty of Arts, Educational Sciences, Law, Theology and Social Sciences. It offers 36 multidisciplinary master's programme with English as the language of instruction. However, in many of the programs, students can also complete studies partly or fully in Finnish and/or Swedish.

University of Helsinki offers very generous scholarships to all their international students and these scholarships are awarded to the best students on the grounds of academic overall assessment according to the general master’s degree entrance requirements, academic excellence and success in previous studies and motivation to study in a master’s programme at the University of Helsinki. In order to avail these benefits, overseas candidates must follow the steps listed below:

  • Apply for a scholarship on the same application form as you apply to an international master’s programme. There are no separate scholarship application forms.
  • After you have filled the application for admission and answered to scholarship-related questions in the formula, your application will be forwarded to the degree programme you have applied to.
  • Each degree programme evaluates the applications and goes through the answers to scholarship-related questions. Based on your previous academic merit and answers to scholarship questions, the programme may award you a 100% or 50% waiver of your tuition fee. Each programme may also award one Finland Scholarship for admitted tuition fee-liable student.
