Update: The Government of Canada announced the end of the Student Direct Stream (SDS program) on 09 November 2024. This fast-track visa program was introduced in 2018 to make Canada student visa process smoother and quicker. The sudden policy change will impact future students planning to study in Canada.

Note: The Student Partners Program (SPP) has been recently replaced by the Student Direct Stream (SDS) program in India.

SPP was meant to make the process of admissions and visa applications easier for Canadian Community Colleges. The full form of SPP is the Student Partners Program. Note that SPP Colleges in Canada mainly offer certificate and diploma courses to international students. The courses offered are meant to develop practical and technical skills. Here we have mentioned the list of colleges under SPP Canada.

SPP Colleges in Canada FAQs

Q. What is SPP Canada?

A. SPP stands for Student Partners Program. It was developed by the collaboration between the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) and the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). Certain Canadian educational institutes and the Canadian High Commission in India aimed to provide quicker student visa processing so as to increase the footfall of Indian students in Canada. However, from 2018 onwards, SDS Canada has been launched which has replaced SPP.

Q. What is SDS Canada?

A. SDS Canada has replaced the previous SPP; however, the motive is still the same; i.e. to quicken the processing of study permit applications for those students who wish to study in Canada at a post-secondary designated learning institution (DLI). If the eligibility requirements are met, SDS applications can get processed within 20 calendar days.

Q. What are the requirements for SDS Canada?

A. Following are the requirements for SDS Canada:

  • Proof of English-language proficiency
  • Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD 20,635.
  • Full tuition fee payment for first year of academics
  • Acceptance letter from a designated learning institution (DLI)
  • Academic transcripts
  • Medical examinations
  • Other requirements such as payment of application processing fee, payment of biometric processing fee, Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) (for those planning to study in Quebec), etc.

Q. What are the advantages of SDS Canada?

A. The major advantage of SDS Canada is faster processing time for student visa. If all the eligibility criteria are met and all the documents are correct, SDS applications can be processed within 20 calendar days. In addition, less documentation is required under this facility.

Q. Is it compulsory to provide a proof of English-language proficiency for SDS Canada?

A. Yes! Submitting the English language proficiency score is important for SDS Canada. Indian students need to provide proof of their English language proficiency through IELTS. Students need to score at least 6.0 in each component of IELTS (reading, writing, speaking and listening).

Q:   What type of programs are offered by ICM Canada?
A:

ICM Canada offers UTP Stage I and Stage II programs. The UTP Stage II program is equivalent to the first-year university program at the University of Manitoba. When students complete the ICM Stage II program, they will be eligible to get transferred to the second year of the degree at the University of Manitoba. UTP Stage I a foundation or pre-university studies programme that acts as a bridge between secondary school and university studies.

Study areas of the UTP Stage II programs are:

  • Agriculture and Food Sciences
  • Engineering
  • Business
  • Environment, Earth, and Resources
