Eligibility Criteria for a PhD in the UK
Anyone can get enrolled on a PhD programme in the UK provided the prospective student holds a minimum upper second-class bachelor’s degree and a recognised master’s degree. Also, it is mandatory to provide proof of English language proficiency, with a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 (mostly).

Every university in the UK requires the applicant to fulfill the set application requirements for any course. The majority of the PhD institutes in the country, which rank among the best, need you to be proficient in the English language as the same is the main language in the country in which programmes are taught. In the United Kingdom, the term for the majority of the research programmes begins in September. But there are a few universities that have programmes which provide additional entry points in the month of January or May. So one can apply in any of these three months, with the deadline generally being three months before the programme begins for overseas students.

University of Lancashire accepts country-specific qualifications from overseas applicants. Indian candidates who wish to pursue their higher studies from the university, must meet the University of Lancashire admission requirements for Indian students listed below:
Undergraduate Requirements:
- Higher secondary school certificate
- Overall score of 60% (80% for excellence scholarship)
- 60% - 70% in Standard XII English (IELTS 6.0 equivalent)
Graduate Requirements:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in relevant field;
- Overall score of 58% in bachelor's degree (80% for excellence scholarship) or 55% in master's degree
- 65% - 75% in Standard XII English (IELTS 6.5 equivalent)
The University requires IELTS under English Language Requirments. However, it also approves other English tests such as TOEFL, Parson test of English, Cambridge, and ESOL. The Undergraduate courses generally require an overall band score of 6.0 with a minimum score of 5.5 in reading, listening, writing and speaking. For postgraduate courses, the minimum score is 6.5, with a minimum score in each of four sections (Reading, writing, speaking and listening).
