College of New Caledonia was established in January of 1969. It was set up on an 'operating funds only' basis. College of New Caledonia was started with financial help from participating school districts. CNC made use of facilities leased by the Prince George Senior Secondary School. The first few programs offered at the College of New Caledonia were Administrative Science, Early Childhood Education, First Year University Arts and Science, and Data Processing. CNC slowly hired faculty to teach these courses. Around 253 students took admission from all participating regions. The college was named after the fur-trading district of Hudson's Bay Company.
