The institute began in 1892 in Mount Pleasant before becoming a state institution in 1895. It was taken over by the Michigan State Board of Education and was renamed to the Central Michigan Normal School. In 1959, it received university status and took over its present-day name,
Student enrollment tripled over the next 10 years. To provide education to students who couldn't visit the campus, it began offering distance education in 1971. The online courses were first introduced in 1994. In 2010, Central Michigan Uni opened its own Medical school.
