Good facilities and diverse learning environment.
Tips: Accommodation is quite difficult to get for many students both international and EU students because of the housing crisis in my city but also generally in Germany and many other EU countries. So I would recommend searching for it well in advance. I have not availed any scholarships but there are a few and they are naturally competitive. I'm satisfied with the university and my course, I couldn't complain about it. However, my city although beautiful, is quite expensive compared to other cities in Germany but Germany has significantly lower tuition fees.

MSc in Embedded Systems Engineering - Batch of 2021

Experiencing German research-focused education, cultural development and personal growth.
Tips: It was certainly a cultural shift to come to Germany as an Indian student and pursue my studies at university. The education system here is knowledge-based and focuses deeply on conceptual understanding. While working on my thesis, I gained practical insight into how research projects are carried out and I gained immense knowledge while working on practical concepts. People here are really helpful and friendly in nature.
Likes (Quality of faculty): Professors are really friendly. They are ready to solve your queries in class, and if you need help, you can approach them anytime, they will help you. Even while doing a part-time job or internship under them, they will help you understand the work and get the concept while doing research on new things. They have expertise in their field.
Dislikes (Indian Food): I prefer to cook my own meals. There are several Indian stores in the area where fresh vegetables, fruits, and groceries are readily available. There are also vegan restaurants in the city centre. Also, there are my restaurants with good vegetarian options as well. There are 3-4 Indian restaurants for occasions when you crave indian food though dining out would be a bit expensive.

Robotic hub of German universities.
Tips: People appreciate it if you are on time. Study aptly and not memorise but analyse. As for jobs, even though the market waivers sometimes, if there's no other option, try to find any job to get your finances and resources sorted. People don't judge you based on what you work. Nevertheless, you will be treated equally. The university offered great courses for my interests so I don't have any complaints.
Likes (Safety): The people are helpful and the city is safe and strict towards any racism or violence. I have had multiple accidents throughout Germany but the people in very few cities have been kind enough to help at least get up. Freiburg was one of the places where people were willing to help you.
Dislikes (Value for money): I believe that other universities offer a similar level of education for lower tuition fees. The tuition fees that I paid were imposed by the state and sometimes these fees differ with respect to different states and universities. So if you have other options feel free to check so.

Student friendly science city.
Tips: First thing is to learn the German language and then start looking for part time jobs in case you don't have a scholarship. Join an international club to connect with other students and people from your own country. Try to do some extracurricular activities to meet people and grow your network which will be helpful after your graduation to find a good job through reference.
Likes (Public transportation): Freiburg has really nice public transportation and connectivity and on top of that, it's a bicycle friendly city. You can either buy a semester ticket or a DB ticket which is valid throughout Germany. Now the price has significantly increased but still quite good if you're into travelling and all.
Dislikes (Indian Food): If you are a vegetarian person then try to buy groceries from supermarket and cook by yourself. If you don't know how to cook, then learn basic cooking skills to survive nicely, although Freiburg is a vegan friendly city but in case you don't find the food that delicious, then you have to cook by yourself.

The city is beautiful but a bit expensive.
Tips: The University of Freiburg is one of the best universities in Germany for Embedded Systems and AI. The programme offers a strong foundation with a research-oriented curriculum and excellent faculty. To enhance career prospects, it is highly recommended to gain practical experience through internships or working student positions alongside your studies. The city is beautiful but a bit expensive so getting on-campus accommodation would be the ideal situation.
Likes (Public transportation): Across Germany, public transportation is excellent and affordable for students. As a student in Germany, you get a travel ticket which costs somewhere around 70 to 100 euros for 6 months. Hence, it is very affordable, and the connectivity is great. People also prefer using a bike in summer.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): Freiburg is a small city and having full-time career opportunities is not ideal. It is great for student jobs and part-time opportunities. If someone wants to settle there, then the options are fewer. In Germany, it is not that difficult to relocate, as the company understands and does not filter based on the city of the applicants. Germany, in general, is a good place to settle.

A lot of part-time opportunities are available in the city and the outskirts of Freiburg.
Tips: Learn the German language even if your course is in English. German cultural understanding would help, but it can be acquired here. Exchange programmes are available to top universities in Europe. Totally satisfied with the experience in Freiburg, would recommend. It would be hard to survive or find jobs without proper German skills.
Likes (Student Life): Great city. International and fun students. All amenities are available. Green and student-friendly city. Safe as well. Great connectivity to Switzerland and France. All sorts of events are available. Need to be proactive and look for like-minded people and activities.
Dislikes (Internships): A lot of part-time opportunities are available in the city and the outskirts of Freiburg. Full-time 6-month internships in Germany require you to take a semester break, which is not preferred since the salary is less compared to part-time jobs in corporate/research institutes.

Good university and faculty.
Tips: An M.Sc. in Computer Science could easily take up to 3 years and certainly more than 2 years. Students should plan financially for it. The expectation is to do both a Project (18 credits) and a Thesis (30 credits), which could take over a year depending on circumstances and the project.
Likes (Quality of faculty): Some world-leading professors were either in Freiburg's Computer Science department or are still there. Most of the courses I experienced were custom-designed based on the research done by the faculty. The course is often supported by Ph.D. students who are directly working on these topics and who offer a rare exposure to frontier research. I experienced this phenomenon in the Biology and Neuroscience departments.
Dislikes (Internships): Not applicable to my line of education and exposure. Our course did not require one. I have heard other students do part time jobs in startups, Fraunhofers, etc. or even remote jobs but they are mostly to support financially, work experience, etc. Not as an internship to obtain credit.

Good university and classes.
Tips: I studied mechanical engineering in India and this Master's course is very vast. There are 3 tracks - renewable energy, sustainable materials and resilience. I concentrate on the later two and designed my course in such a way that I land a job in the field of mechanical engineering by working part time as a research assistant at one of the 5 Fraunhofer institutes in Freiburg doing my Masters thesis there in the field I like to later get a full time scientist role in the field of core mechanical engineering, German language skills played a key role here I have C1 now. My other classmates who concentrate on renewable energy are working as energy consultants, PhD students, etc. So it's a very open course with opportunities to make your own path. I am very satisfied with the course. Freiburg is the sunniest city in Germany and it's not a huge city like the major cities, so partying, nightlife all that won't be at that level if you're that kind of person. For nature loving, pace loving, calm lifestyle lovers, Freiburg is the perfect city to settle - directly at the heart of the black forest, Next to Switzerland and France. But after the Masters, only a few lucky ones are able to find a job in Freiburg itself. Most of my classmates are either in a different city in Germany or in a different country in Europe. The people in this part of Germany are mostly open minded, nature loving and there is little to no racism here. I, being a flautist, have been performing here regularly and there is a lot of love towards indian classical music and culture.
Likes (Post study jobs): There is an international student club, with also Indian night and other community events. Freiburg, being a student city, the student life is amazing. As I am a flautist, I have performed in the Indian events. We also have a huge indian community with the majority being students in Freiburg with several events organised throughout the year on major festivals of India, independent of the university.
Dislikes (Part time work): The course is very vast with three different tracks. For every lecture, the faculty is different, so approachability varies. Some are very friendly, some are okay. Teaching methodology also varies from professor to professor. It's mostly with pre uploaded PowerPoint which you can already download from the study portals and go to the lecture so that you can take notes on the PowerPoint itself on your laptop or tablet. The entire Inatech department is really diverse. Most professors are German. The tutors are of different nationalities who are usually Ph.D. students of the professors.

Multi cultural university.
Tips: At first, there was definitely a cultural difference as it is a very different country compared to India. One advice would be to be open to new experiences. You can get help from many places for scholarships. Just look into the university website carefully.
Likes (Permanent Immigration): If you find a job after your studies, becoming a permanent resident is quite easy. I would like to permanently immigrate to this country. The country needs some improvement in the bureaucracy problem as it still requires many months to get appointments and approval.
Dislikes (Internships): It is a small city still there are many opportunities for internship or student jobs. There are many research institutes in the city for all kind of research where you can apply for. There are also lots of opportunities in the university itself.

A bittersweet experience which would feel worth it by the end.
Tips: The course is very challenging as it is a research oriented curriculum. It would ideally take 2.5 years to 3 years to complete course as it requires a student to do a Master's thesis for 30 credits. As per the current situation in Germany, the job market is horrible and people are finding it difficult to find a job. To increase your chances of getting a job, I would suggest learn German at least until B2 before en of your studies. The university is really good if you plan to pursue a PhD or a career in research, as all the coursework concentrates more on the theoretical aspects and even the student job that one would find would be a research project.
Dislikes (Value for money): The University of Freiburg is present in the state of Baden wurttenburg. Compared to other states in Germany, where the education is almost free, the state of BW has a state fee of 1500 euros and also a university fee of 200 euros. But this extra fee doesn't give any benefits to the students. This fee paid could be claimed only if you work in the state of BW, once you start your full time job.

Freiburg is an excellent place to learn and grow.
Tips: Please try to integrate with people from other nationalities. Try not to get sick with fellow Indians, as you will never experience the different cultures. And respect the country you are going to. Be aware of civic sense and treat everyone with respect. It is very often that we see reports of our fellow Indians disrespecting the culture and people. This will affect your stay and also any future admissions from our country.
Likes (Quality of faculty): The faculty is a close knit group. All professors are on the same campus and the departments are located next to each other. Approaching the professors is difficult because of their busy schedule but approaching PhD students and post-docs is doable and they are always helpful.
Dislikes (Value for money): The tuition fee per semester in any public university located in Baden Wurttemberg is 1500. This is for any non-EU student. It is quite high compared to other universities in the east but lower compared to universities in Bayern, eg, TUM. However, the quality of the study is excellent and the courses are very thorough. On average, it takes 2.5 years or 5-6 semesters to complete the course with good grades.

University of Freiburg is worth every effort, time and penny that you spend.
Tips: Travelling to Germany from India does indeed cause a cultural shift, due to people, food and experiences in general. However, it smoothens over time as one gets more drawn into daily life and academics. I did not avail any scholarships but Germany is known to have the Deutschlandstipendium. I am very satisfied with the University of Freiburg, M.Sc. Embedded Systems Engineering and Germany in particular. It was always a dream of mine to stay and study in this country and the last few years have been nothing short of living that dream. Freiburg itself is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
Likes (Public transportation): The University of Freiburg has a number of campuses, each situated in different parts of the city. The city is well connected in general and there are often stops particularly for the various campuses. We have intra and inter city trains, trams and buses which are almost always on time and very regular. Decently affordable public transportation using the semester ticket.
Dislikes (Internships): University Freiburg has study-specific counselling persons and regular counselling sessions in general. Furthermore, internships conducted in companies are regularly posted on notice boards or sent via email. A decent number of internships are available, pertaining to the respective field of study.

Freiburg is an extremely international and fairly small city.
Tips: There is a wide range of activities available for everyone to participate in. There is a great music scene here. Be prepared to understand cultures from all over the world that celebrate their festivals. The summer here is one of the best times to be around. There is a Deutschland scholarship that everyone can apply to - the only condition is that you need to have a good grade in your course (1.3 - 1.5).
Likes (Safety): Freiburg is an extremely international and fairly small city with around 300,000 strong population. The student dominated city is very left learning, and creates a great environment to express yourself without limitations and judgment. The city is well lit and safe at all times at night and you will find people of all ages travelling alone and in groups at all times without fear. It is a safe, clean city.
Dislikes (Internships): There are various companies, exchange programs and other opportunities with labs and groups around the city and state available to the students all year. And people are friendly in encouraging you and helping you with these opportunities. E.g.: Freiburg Global Exchange.

University of Freiburg is a great place with a vibrant and an international student community.
Tips: Living costs are increasing, mostly the rent. But this is true for all German cities. Courses are research oriented and it takes 2 - 3 years to finish Master's. Learn basic German at least A1 level before coming to Germany. Things move at a lower rate.
Likes (Student Life): There are large student communities living and studying together in dormitories. SWFR (student organizing body) organises many intercultural events for all students. There are lots of places to hang out pubs bars take aways, a lot of nature and activities for nature loving people.
Dislikes (Indian Food): You get all the raw materials for cooking. There are so many good Indian restaurants that can be tried out. The local grocery stores have so many items that can be recycled to cook Indian dishes. Dormitories and private places all have a kitchen to cook your own food. Additionally, there is a Mensa for eating daily lunch at a much cheaper rate for students.

Good university and supportive faculty.
Tips: The most important thing that students should know before joining is that there is no concept of on-campus placements in Germany. This applies to all universities in Germany, not just the University of Freiburg. Students are responsible for finding employment on their own after graduation. Apart from that, the University of Freiburg is an excellent institution, especially for those who want to study in the field of AI. It is a highly research-oriented university that provides strong academic and practical exposure. I am very satisfied with my university, my course and my experience in Germany. The city of Freiburg is beautiful, peaceful and student friendly.
Likes (Safety): Freiburg is one of the safest and most welcoming cities in Germany. The atmosphere here is calm and people are generally friendly towards international students. It feels secure to travel with the bicycle or public transport even at night. Personally my experience in Freiburg has been very positive. I had no bad experience.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): The immigration options are easily available if your record is clean i.e. you haven't done anything illegal. It's easy to obtain a student visa and after studies, once you receive a full-time job offer you become eligible for the EU Blue card, which usually takes only about a week to obtain after receiving the job offer letter. After holding the EU Blue card for four years you become eligible to apply for a Permanent residence permit.

Embracing learning and independence in college life.
Tips: It's a life where one has to manage life independently. There are different rules and regulations that one needs to follow. Paperwork is more prevalent here so one needs patience to deal with every process. Cultural shift will be there in terms of food, festivals etc. But also people here appreciate other cultures and celebrate with us. There is a lot to learn. Personally I met all my expenses doing research assistant jobs. I am contended with my university and course.
Likes (Public transportation): The city is well connected with trams, trains and buses. The commute to the university is easy from any part of the city. Also for students they provide cycles that are free to ride for half an hour. There are apps that give proper timings and routes for reaching a particular place. Also every change in routes is informed prior so that people can plan.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Most restaurants serve north indian where the food options are restricted to the famous dishes like naan, tandoori chicken and paneer. So the options are less. Each visit to Indian restaurant cost around 14 - 25 euros per person. I prefer cooking myself.

Very few relevant job opportunities for engineers.
Tips: It is common to extend at least one semester here due to high workloads. If you want to complete in the given time, you cannot do extra stuff like part time job and travelling. You just need to study. The only scholarship for Indians is the Deutschland stipendum, for which you need 1.0 to 1.5 German grade.
Likes (Safety): No problems faced till now. I have travelled late at night, still I always felt safe. Maybe I am new, that is why. Need to spend more time here, then only I can tell more about this. But my friends who have been here since the last 1 year had no bad experiences related to safety.
Dislikes (Internships): There are some research institutes like Faunhofer and some startups. Apart from that, there are no big companies here. Very few relevant job opportunities for engineers. You can work remotely. Also you can work part time in restaurants and other places easily.

University of Freiburg - Embedded Systems Engineering.
Tips: The engineering courses are flexible and offer a wide spectrum of subjects from which you can choose your credits. This gives flexibility and a chance to explore various fields for students. Freiburg is a beautiful, fantastic and multi-cultural place with a majority of the population being students. I didn't avail any scholarships.
Likes (Post study jobs): We don't really need companies to offer sponsorship in Germany. Once we finish the studies, we are on a job-seeker visa and can apply for any jobs here. The Embedded Systems course offers a wide spectrum of subjects, so a wide range of job roles are offered for students who graduate. Salary packages are typically 60000 - 70000.
Dislikes (Internships): The guidance on finding internships is good. You could find internships for renewable and sustainable energy engineering fields, because of the Fraunhofer Institutes in Freiburg. But as Freiburg is not really a big industrial city, there are not many big electronics/automobile companies. So finding an internship in those fields is a bit difficult.

Tips: Please learn basic conversational German before arriving, although it's a university town. Respect the rules and regulations of the city and abide by them. Enrolling in some sports activities helps to make friends and break the ice. Do everything by yourself rather than depending on professors to hand you stuff, German culture works on asking rather than getting something for free.
Likes (Safety): Freiburg is a safe city with not much of a crime rate, one has to be generally careful especially when walking alone at night away from the city. There are some on ground staff post work hours to ensure safety, however, one has to be careful and attentive at all times.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): The current job market is stagnant with not too many opportunities. However, there are jobs in the semiconductor and chemical sectors which can be hired. From doubts to directions - My Master's journey in Germany.
Tips: There has been significant growth. I've become more confident in my decisions, my perspective, my body language and attitude after meeting new people and adapting to the new environment. I managed my expenses through student assistant roles and part-time jobs, but one can apply for DAAD scholarships. Initially, I doubted the course I selected, but later realised that I am in the perfect spot, as it is the upcoming technology and booming field. My course on Microsystems Engineering is suitable for Electronic and Communication and Mechanical Engineering undergraduates. The course involves Semiconductor chip design and manufacturing, useful in all smart gadgets and modern automotive systems.
Likes (Public transportation): The city has several public transportation options including trams every 7 mins, connecting all parts of the city, S-Bahn intercity trains and buses If you want affordable tickets and you don't want to travel much, it's best to buy a semester ticket. To travel throughout Germany, you can buy a Deutschland ticket or an RVF Jugend ticket for under 27years, a bit expensive but worth the money if you like travelling.
Dislikes (Part time work): A lot of non-technical jobs, such as restaurants, student canteens called after Mensa, and DHL.
