Bachelor of Science in Computer Science - Batch of 2025

Vibrant yet calm research based institute.
Tips: Focus on networking the most and take part in clubs as much as you can. Don't focus mainly on studies and you should have an amazing time here. There are not a lot of scholarships available for international students but higher achievers do gain them as long as you maintain gpa above 3.
Likes (Post study jobs): A lot of on-campus companies offer visa sponsorship starting at a base salary of 35000 per annum. You need to be tenacious enough to apply anywhere and everywhere. The job roles are much lax compared to the Indian companies where you are expected to go above and beyond, but here you have a really helpful staff and upper management.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are a lot of options for many non-vegetarian but not a lot for vegetarian. Though they have started to adopt veganism. I prefer cooking for myself to prevent cross-contamination. Groceries are cheap and high quality, plus shops are walkable and also accessible by free buses.

Very friendly and great environment.
Tips: Know your course curriculum, credit requirements, grading system and academic calendar. Understand the teaching style: lecture-based hands on research oriented. Be clear on tuition fees, housing cost, living expenses and available scholarships or financial aid. Know the payment deadline and how to manage a student budget. Familiarise yourself with student services academic advising counselling health centre career centre and tutoring. Learn how to access the library labs and online platforms like Canvas or Blackboard. Research student clubs sports cultural organisations and campus events. Know the local area transport, safety, entertainment and job opportunities. Understand on campus vs off campus housing pros and cons. The quality of faculty is very high here. Faculty do a great job of delivering clear explanations, engaging lectures, good classroom management and the ability to make complex topics understandable. They stay updated on the latest research and integrate current knowledge into teaching. They are approachable available for questions or guidance, and genuinely interested in student success. They are good at explaining ideas, open to discussion, give constructive feedback and listen actively.
Likes (Quality of faculty): Learn soft skills: communication teamwork and adaptability. Take advantage of the university resources libraries tutors office hours and career centre. Maintain regular sleep eat nutritious food and stay physically active. Avoid burnout mental health is as important as grades. And know that it is okay to seek help from the counselling centre when you need it. Make friends from diverse backgrounds. Join clubs student groups or sports teams to build community and leadership skills.

Satisfying and not satisfying. Public transport is easy to get used to.
Tips: First thing you should know is to decide where you want to stay. Off-campus is definitely a better choice if you have financial challenges. Given that you can afford it, on-campus housing would be better if you love to be engaged with the student community and want to know what going on around. I received a scholarship of 9000 dollars per semester but that is because I applied through Shorelight. If you apply through an agency, then they probably have some sort of contacts and you get scholarship based on that contact. However, if you apply yourself, you can even get 100 percent scholarship. But if you apply through someone else, they won't tell you this so make sure you apply yourself. Usually, you have to write an essay to get the scholarship and submit your SAT test scores. I think I am pretty satisfied with the university in terms of its quality of education. However, because Kansas is mostly farming land and it is slow paced state as compared to other states, people who are interested in IT area of study would struggle to get post graduation job. Construction companies are in good numbers here but for Software engineers etc., it will most probably be a lot harder to find a job.
Likes (Public transportation): The whole town is connected through various bus routes. Bus is the main public transportation in Lawrence. Since it's a small town, buses are easily able to cover most of the main areas, especially downtown. If you don't own a car, it would be totally fine. This is how convenient and easy it is to travel using public transportation.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): Since University of Kansas is situated in a small town called Lawrence in Kansas state, you won't find many options to immigrate permanently. My chances are low because the options I know to get permanent settled here are:
1. Get married
2. Find a job on OPT and get H1b visa
3. Find a lawyer to file eb3 unskilled visa for you
Problem with first option is that I do not want to get married right now just for the sake of permanent residence. Second option is based on luck because they do a lottery for h1b visa. Third can be quite expensive.

Masters at the George Washington University.
Tips: If you haven't been offered a scholarship, please do ask them, send them an email. They offer scholarships to almost every master's and PhD student, so don't miss out on that. In terms of transition, forget Indian food, especially buying it out, get all you need to cook Indian food from home, save time, money and most importantly, tastes so much better.
Likes (Public transportation): The campus is connected really well in terms of public transportation. Since Virginia is well connected because of the same they have pretty good Indian stores and restaurants compared to Foggy Bottom, DC. Hence, we make many trips. However safety is of no concern within the campus. If you're stepping out you may have to be cautious.
Dislikes (Part time work): Due to the new rules, any international student studying under the F1 visa can only work part time within campus. This, as a result created a huge competition towards getting these job roles. Its not that you cannot land a part time but you must constantly apply and you should be able to land a decent one within 3-6 months.
Part times are generally not that stressful. You can easily manage your studies as part times timings can be flexible depending on your class schedule. A point to note here is you may land a campus part time in a different campus you have free shuttles to connect you there from the main campus or you may use the metro, for which u can opt for the UPASS program which saves you a lot of money on public transportation.
The average payout for any part time is usually about 18 dollars per hour and you are allowed to work over 40 hours during vacation and 20 hours per week while classes are going on. The pay can go up to 20 dollars as well.

Diverse and Rewarding GWU
Tips: Newcomers should be prepared for a vibrant diverse community. Transitioning here involved adapting to a significant cultural shift enriching my global perspective. I secured a scholarship through academic merit.
Likes (Safety): Facilities like emergency call stations safety apps and escort services contribute to a secure environment. I haven't had any bad experiences in the city reinforcing my confidence in the university commitment to student safety.
Dislikes (Internships): George Washington University offers good support and resources for finding and applying to relevant internships in the Computer Science field though finding the perfect match requires personal effort and connections.
