Academically challenging but great opportunity for growth
Tips: Language is a huge barrier; the local students do have a working understanding of English, but there is a cultural difference when it comes to freely speaking a foreign language. I had the Erasmus mobility scholarship. The scholarship is available to all students who don't have a previous active scholarship and can be applied through an online portal. The allowance depends on the city chosen for mobility. I was granted 500 euros per month for my semester in Munich. The weather in Rennes does tend to be very unpredictable. A raincoat is a necessary investment due to strong rain bursts and wind; umbrellas are not enough. Student life is definitely active, but you might struggle with the language barrier. This generally applied to all of France, in my opinion. Any Erasmus program is generally a good idea, as it forces you to learn every aspect of adulting, from bureaucracy to simple day-to-day living. However, post-program employability definitely varies from program and year to year. Approximately half of my cohort struggled with getting PhDs due to the huge changes in the geopolitical landscape. This includes the cuts to American science due to the Trump administration, which has pushed the competition in European academia to be very cutthroat.
Likes (Public transportation): An affordable all-inclusive transport pass that allows access to a well-connected bus and metro network as well as a city bicycle service. The Beaulieu campus has a direct metro line to the city center (line B, 15 mins), but it was under repairs for a majority of the period I was there. So I primarily used the bus network to travel to the city center (30 mins). Using the city bicycle service is also a great alternative due to the dedicated bike paths in the city.
Dislikes (Part time work): My program specifically was too hectic to spare time for part-time work. A considerable number of jobs available require conversational French understanding. Our professors did not provide any support to students wanting to take up part-time jobs. As such, the initiative has to be on the student's side to seek out opportunities. There are a few positions available in English tutoring and in the on-campus cafeteria. I don't know any specific details.
