Germany is challenging but also rewarding.
Tips: The transition is not easy. Apart from the cultural shift, there is also a shift in the academic culture. In Germany, at least for masters degree programs, there is a lot of freedom in terms of selecting when and how many courses do you want to do each semester. This is be a great and a terrible thing at the same time because it gives students a lot of freedom - but as Indian students we are not accustomed to this freedom and I often see Indian students misusing this freedom.
Likes (Safety): The student union is very helpful, especially in terms of safety. But you have to approach them of your own accord. Sometimes they are very busy and don't reply to emails promptly. The easiest solution is to go to their office during their working hours and address your issues in person.
There are some instances of racism but I have personally not experienced any racism.
Dislikes (Student Life): Depending on what courses you take for the semester, there can be between 10 - 20 hours of lectures per week. You spend approximately the same amount of time studying and preparing for the coming lectures. So there is a lot of free time, where you can work part time. Legally, you are allowed to work 20 hours per week as a student during the lecture period and 40 hours per week outside the lecture period. You can earn enough money while working part time to sustain yourself if your expenses are not extravagant.
There are many events organized on the campus and I often participate.
There are many student clubs on the campus and it is easy to participate in any of them.
