Quite city and the buzz around research.

Tips: One of the biggest shifts for me was getting used to the level of study—the way they teach here really forces you to think for yourself and actually question things. On top of that, I suddenly had to start cooking for myself because getting food delivered is way too expensive and there aren't many options anyway. It definitely made me more independent, and surprisingly, it was actually a great way to bond and work with people from all over the place.

Likes (Student Life): Every day was the perfect balance between studying and the extra time I got to pursue my hobbies. Events like the welcome party, BBQ in summer, and Convocation ceremony are well organised and I enjoyed them. There were clubs like the sports club, games night, music and choir club, etc.

Dislikes (Indian Food): There are multiple restaurants, however, the quality is not consistent. We have to travel to neighbouring cities like Cologne to get authentic Indian food. I prefer cooking myself, I see it as a therapy after a long day. It's cheaper if you make food at home.

An experience that teaches beyond the classroom.

Tips: The most important thing is discipline- one needs to build that as you are in an independent situation and have to run every single thing yourself. So it's not just a masters course I am pursuing but life management skills too. To make it easy I built as many connections as possible and asked questions. I got thoroughly informed about the bureaucracy processes and learnt the language to adapt and make things smooth for myself. I did not avail any scholarships. I am quite satisfied with all of it.

Likes (Quality of faculty): The University of Bonn has a good set of faculty and administrators to help out the students. It also depends on the departments and their reputation. From my personal experience, the faculty was very patient and supportive, especially with the international students. In spite of that, I would suggest always searching the faculty and the staff and their reputation before deciding on taking up a course. Even if the course is top notch, the faculty could make it or break it for you. There's no such unique methodology in a classroom, but in a laboratory or a practical setting, there's freedom to actually experiments and come up with your own methodology. The teachers are quite welcoming of that usually and are interested in students' ideas and questions. In terms of nationality, I haven't seen much diversity so far. They've been mostly of German or European origin.

Dislikes (Part time work): Of course there are part-time or Werkstudent positions in labs, libraries and museums, but the competition is also quite high. So at least half of the students end up working in restaurants, cafu00e9s or warehouse- because these jobs generally don't have language requirements. The part time jobs are fairly manageable as lectures don't go on for the whole day, so one can schedule work according. And the employers are usually cooperative in case of a student employee. The average payout for part time 20 hours/week or a mini job 10 hours/week. The minimum wage is 13.9/hr. Plays enough to survive as a student but depends heavily on which city you reside in. In Bonn, it's a good pay whereas in Munich or Hamburg it's barely enough.

Inside MSc Astrophysics at Bonn.

Tips: There is an option to get scholarships under the BCGS framework but it is extremely competitive. The transition from an Indian system of education to the German one is significantly tougher than I had initially presumed. The course structure is awfully hard and the pace can sometimes overwhelm students. But it's an absolute goldmine for those who love this subject.

Likes (Student Life): A lot of student organizations regularly meet at different events and parties. They make sure you feel included. Lots of Beer, free pizzas and barbecue parties, board games, sports and politics are all very common here. You will never feel bored but you may feel overwhelmed.

Dislikes (Indian Food): Indian food restaurants usually make Indian food in a 'western style'. Authentic Indian food is costly and rare. A solid community of Indian workers means that sometimes you could ask for 'Indian Style' food items and they may provide you with one that tastes just like back at home.

Growing, learning, and finding my place.

Tips: Students should know that the college is academically strong and the workload can get intense, so time management really matters. When I first came here, the transition was smooth but there was definitely a cultural shift. People are very independent, straightforward, and everyone minds their own space. It took me a bit to adjust but eventually I learned to handle things on my own and became more confident. I didn't get any scholarships personally, though the university does offer options depending on your profile. I'm quite satisfied with my university, my course, and the country. The environment feels safe, the teaching quality is good, and the course matches what I wanted for my career.

Dislikes (Part time work): The student life here is genuinely enjoyable and balanced. My days usually start with classes followed by group study sessions, small campus hangout or grabbing coffee with friends. What I enjoy the most is how lively yet peaceful the campus feels. The college regularly organizes cultural events, academic talks, sports days, and small community meetups. I don't attend everything, but I join the ones that interest me. There are also many student clubs, cultural clubs, research groups, sports teams international student communities so it's easy to find something you vibe with and feel included.

The Masters program experience at the University of Bonn was great.

Tips: Going abroad really made me more independent and I got better at work. The academics were awesome. Since it was a research-focused course with lots of options it helped me get the skills I needed in my field. The city and people were super welcoming and friendly.

Likes (Part time work): I have been working as a student assistant in one of the working groups at my University. As per my knowledge the minimum wage now is nearly 14 euros per hour, in institutes. It depends on the available vacancy and definitely the professor's impression of you, whether you manage to get it or not. The work was really flexible. I have no personal experience regarding off-campus part-time jobs. However, I have heard that knowing the language probably the A2 level is really important in fetching them.

Dislikes (Indian Food): The Indian restaurants are not as authentic as how they are in India. In addition, food is really costly with a minimum of 12 euros. You can find Korean, Pakistani and Arabic Restaurants too apart from German. I prefer cooking by myself. However if it is difficult due to the curriculum, I would opt for the University canteen which is amazing.

Excellent faculty and a diverse environment.

Tips: I have more freedom, less judgment and safety for women helped me experience more good things like travelling both locally & internationally. You have to do everything alone, and everything takes time due to bureaucracy, which teaches independence, patience, and perseverance. Loneliness does hit hard, especially during festivals and the winter season, but that is common and natural for international students to experience. There are many ways to deal with it. I have become more confident and sure of myself after coming here. It's a completely different country with different societal norms, people, and culture. So yes, I did experience a cultural shift. People here are colder as compared to Indians. They are more reserved. One cannot make friends with them easily, especially not without learning the language. No scholarship. Very satisfied with all three. It has its ups and downs but I am happy.

Likes (Quality of faculty): Accessible via email. You cannot call their personal number. They are approachable to a certain extent. We have a lot of practical exercises that complement the theory very nicely. The assignments and exams are very application-oriented. They make you think, even though a lot of questions are theory-heavy too. It's a good balance. Not diverse. All my professors are German. But the class is very diverse. Half the students are usually from India.

Dislikes (Indian Food): Most are restaurants serving food like pizza, done, and burgers. There are other Asian restaurants, like Vietnamese and Thai. Indian restaurants are also there. But they are not as frequent as the Western ones. I prefer cooking food myself. It saves money. I do meal prep, which saves time and energy.
