The University of Bonn is a fantastic, multi-cultural experience
Tips: Education in state Universities in Germany is generally "free", with a token fee of around 500 euros per semester which covers all your transportation cost in the form of a student semester ticket. This remains the case in the state of NRW. I'm incredible satisfied with the University and as such I stayed on for 5 additional years to complete a position as a researcher and subsequently my doctorate.
Likes (Indian Food): There's loads of Indian restaurants across Bonn and the options for food, vegetarian or otherwise, are excellent. Cost for food has ballooned since the numerous crises that have dotted the globe since 2018, and the best option is to cook for oneself. Personally, I prefer a mix of cooking for myself and eating outside as this provides a fairly decent balance in managing other, extra-curricular activities.
Dislikes (Student Life): The University of Bonn is unique in the sense that there's no campus per se, it's a university town. University buildings and institutes are spread across the entirety of central Bonn, intermingled with residential complexes. The schedule is flexible and one may enjoy classes in the morning, followed by a day-job right after culminating in some evening activities organized by different clubs, too.

Things to know before joining the University of Bonn
Tips: Look, the University of Bonn is a legit powerhouse—it's part of Germany's Excellence Strategy, so the research funding here is massive. That also means the academics are pretty brutal. The courses are demanding, and you're expected to do a ton of independent studying on your own rather than having your hand held. If you're coming for a Master's, you'll find plenty of English-taught programs, but for Bachelor's degrees, you absolutely have to be fluent in German.
On the bright side, Bonn is way more affordable than places like Munich or Frankfurt, though hunting for an apartment is still a massive headache because the housing market is so competitive. The university also has huge ties to major research hubs like the Max Planck Society, which is a massive plus. Overall, I’d absolutely recommend studying here. The campus vibe is incredibly global, and the student life around town is always buzzing.
Likes (Value for money): Honestly, rating Bonn high for value for money was a no-brainer. Compared to the absolute joke of tuition fees you have to pay in the US or UK, Germany’s public uni system is a total steal. You aren't paying a single cent in actual tuition here. You just shell out a small semester fee twice a year, which is honestly nothing when you look at the world-class education you’re getting back.
The best part is that your semester fee covers the NRW ticket, meaning you get completely free, unlimited public transit across the whole state. That saves you a massive amount of cash right there. Plus, when you mix in student discounts at the campus Mensa and random spots around town, day-to-day life gets way cheaper. Sure, trying to land a spot in the Studierendenwerk dorms is a brutal gamble, but if you get lucky, your rent drops to almost nothing. Getting a degree from a top-tier global research university while living in a great city like Bonn without drowning in debt? The return on investment is honestly crazy.

Quite city and the buzz around research.
Tips: One of the biggest shifts for me was getting used to the level of study—the way they teach here really forces you to think for yourself and actually question things. On top of that, I suddenly had to start cooking for myself because getting food delivered is way too expensive and there aren't many options anyway. It definitely made me more independent, and surprisingly, it was actually a great way to bond and work with people from all over the place.
Likes (Student Life): Every day was the perfect balance between studying and the extra time I got to pursue my hobbies. Events like the welcome party, BBQ in summer, and Convocation ceremony are well organised and I enjoyed them. There were clubs like the sports club, games night, music and choir club, etc.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are multiple restaurants, however, the quality is not consistent. We have to travel to neighbouring cities like Cologne to get authentic Indian food. I prefer cooking myself, I see it as a therapy after a long day. It's cheaper if you make food at home.

An experience that teaches beyond the classroom.
Tips: The most important thing is discipline- one needs to build that as you are in an independent situation and have to run every single thing yourself. So it's not just a masters course I am pursuing but life management skills too. To make it easy I built as many connections as possible and asked questions. I got thoroughly informed about the bureaucracy processes and learnt the language to adapt and make things smooth for myself. I did not avail any scholarships. I am quite satisfied with all of it.
Likes (Quality of faculty): The University of Bonn has a good set of faculty and administrators to help out the students. It also depends on the departments and their reputation. From my personal experience, the faculty was very patient and supportive, especially with the international students. In spite of that, I would suggest always searching the faculty and the staff and their reputation before deciding on taking up a course. Even if the course is top notch, the faculty could make it or break it for you. There's no such unique methodology in a classroom, but in a laboratory or a practical setting, there's freedom to actually experiments and come up with your own methodology. The teachers are quite welcoming of that usually and are interested in students' ideas and questions. In terms of nationality, I haven't seen much diversity so far. They've been mostly of German or European origin.
Dislikes (Part time work): Of course there are part-time or Werkstudent positions in labs, libraries and museums, but the competition is also quite high. So at least half of the students end up working in restaurants, cafu00e9s or warehouse- because these jobs generally don't have language requirements. The part time jobs are fairly manageable as lectures don't go on for the whole day, so one can schedule work according. And the employers are usually cooperative in case of a student employee. The average payout for part time 20 hours/week or a mini job 10 hours/week. The minimum wage is 13.9/hr. Plays enough to survive as a student but depends heavily on which city you reside in. In Bonn, it's a good pay whereas in Munich or Hamburg it's barely enough.

Excellent faculty and a diverse environment.
Tips: I have more freedom, less judgment and safety for women helped me experience more good things like travelling both locally & internationally. You have to do everything alone, and everything takes time due to bureaucracy, which teaches independence, patience, and perseverance. Loneliness does hit hard, especially during festivals and the winter season, but that is common and natural for international students to experience. There are many ways to deal with it. I have become more confident and sure of myself after coming here. It's a completely different country with different societal norms, people, and culture. So yes, I did experience a cultural shift. People here are colder as compared to Indians. They are more reserved. One cannot make friends with them easily, especially not without learning the language. No scholarship. Very satisfied with all three. It has its ups and downs but I am happy.
Likes (Quality of faculty): Accessible via email. You cannot call their personal number. They are approachable to a certain extent. We have a lot of practical exercises that complement the theory very nicely. The assignments and exams are very application-oriented. They make you think, even though a lot of questions are theory-heavy too. It's a good balance. Not diverse. All my professors are German. But the class is very diverse. Half the students are usually from India.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Most are restaurants serving food like pizza, done, and burgers. There are other Asian restaurants, like Vietnamese and Thai. Indian restaurants are also there. But they are not as frequent as the Western ones. I prefer cooking food myself. It saves money. I do meal prep, which saves time and energy.
